Hi,
I hope I can explain this without confusing you! We live in Louisiana and will be dropping our son off in Burton, TX for a week, dropping off on a sunday and picking him up the following saturday. I may do one of the trips by myself so I can come and go in the same day to save money, but for one of the trips I'd like to spend the night somewhere with a great pool area or something fun to do for all 3 of our boys (11, 6,& 4). We have also always wanted to do the Bluebell factory tour in Brenham, but they only do them Mon-Friday, so we'd either have to spend Thursday and Friday night before dropping him off, or Sat & Sun night when picking him up.

I found a resort in Montgomery (La Torretta) that looks nice (although there were some negative reviews, would like feedback if any of you have ever been!), but if we did the factory tour we would be having to backtrack to get back to Brenham from Montgomery, since we'd have to wait til they re-opened on Mon. Similarly, I found one in the Woodlands, but would still have to backtrack (or in the reverse, if we went before dropping him off). They're also pretty pricey ($200plus/night), which is not bad for a resort, but it's more than I wanted to spend just for a bonus 1-2 night trip... we will already be spending a fortune in gas with both trips.

So, are there any other resorts or some place fun to stay in that area? I'm open to any suggestions, not just those with water park-like pools. Or should I just drop the bluebell idea, and stop at either La Torretta or the Woodlands for one night on the way home? We go to Houston/medical center often, so we will probably have another chance to see the factory.
Thanks for helping me to brainstorm!!

,Hmmm... I'll preface this with giving you my background. I live in Houston. My kids' summer camp is in La Grange (about 25 mi SE from Burton).

I will tell you I have never pulled the trigger on the Woodlands Resort or La Torretta. I think they are more hype than anything else. And with Houston, it's not a very tourist destination. It's great to live/work here but not too exciting to visit.

I think you can get a cheap room in Brenham if you want to do the Bluebell tour. Maybe stay the night in a cheap Brenham hotel Sunday night and then take the kids to la Toreta or Woodlands if you wish. Or reverse it and get o Brenham on Friday for the Bluebell tour, stay the night and pick up son on Saturday.

If you are willing to camp, (or stay at nearby non resort hotel) check out Splashaway. It's a great (really!) water park in Sheridan. Sheridan is not too far S of I 10 (hwy 90 s of Columbus). They have decent ticket prices and could be easily on your way to/from LA

The Woodlands would be fun, but it is really quite a bit out of the way from Montgomery or the Woodlands, but that may be how far you have to go to stay at a resort style place.

I can't think of any resort type hotel close, but if the dates work out here is a like for a fun, free activity just off 290. http://www.hals.org/

Hyatt Lost Pines is amazing, but it's about another hour West. It's also pretty pricey. Worth looking into if you're willing to drive another hour west. --Katie

The Hyatt Lost pines is awesome or you could go to McKinney Roughs in Austin, there are should be good room rates in Austin, especially if you get a extended stay and cook in the room. There are lots of parks in the Austin area that are awesome, Check out Texas state parks site. Take a cooler and get suasage at Burton Sausage, best in the state, awesome meat market there too, love their hamburger meat, zero fat.

there is a Jellystone in Waller, about an hour from Burton. Close to NW Houston and the outlet mall, movie theatre, drive in move in Hockley. they have cabins to rent.

Thanks so much for the suggestions. I would love to go to Austin (or even San Antonio), and we have family in Mckinney too, but I'm justifying this extra vacation to break up the drive for the kids, so DH probably won't go for driving further west, lol! I think we will probably do either splash town or jellystone, those look like very affordable options for the water activities the kids will love. We can even borrow our in-laws rv probably! And we will definitely check out Burton sausage, didn't know it was there and DH would love that!
Thanks again!
