Where does the room steward sleep?

My question isn't where do they sleep, it's when do they sleep? Every time we left our room on any of our cruises, the room steward appeared out of nowhere to tidy the bed, tidy the bathroom, and whatever else needed doing!

I suspect they work on cabins over a 14 hour period everyday, about 8 am to 10 pm. We usually saw our cabin stewart about 8 each morning gathering his cleaning equipment. We had late seating, so we saw him in the evening as we went back and forth to our cabin while early seating was underway, he was cleaning the early seating cabins. I also suspect they have other duties, like delivering your luggage to your cabin the first day, and picking it up the last night.

I don't think they do sleep. Our steward was Rohan and he was much quiet than our other stewarts, but no less efficient. We make sure we gave him above the recommended amount.

Thank-you for the link, Trixiezzz. That was utterly fascinating. DCL really seems to look out for their employees, if they have any free time to theirselves.

On my first DCL cruise, and my second cruise overall, the server, who was from Croatia, had previously worked for Carninval Cruise Lines, and he said he much prefered working for Disney, than he did for Carnival. Though, I don't remember why.

And as little they get paid, many of them, especially those in tipped positions, actually earn far more with DCL, then they could working in their native countries.

Hmm - I knew there was a crew bar, but the dcljobs site said there's both an indoor and an outdoor crew bar. Wonder where the outdoor one is "outdoors"? Has anyhone spied it?

I believe that it is where the CM pool is, under the overhang there.

I just cropped that part of a picture of the ship's model. There is quite a bit by the CM pool that we don't see. ;)

We were talking to our server at Palo on our last cruise a onth ago and it is amazing how the crew mambers do it. She was saying that her and her husband both worked onboard and they had to live seperatly for over a month until they could get a room together. I also had no idea there were deck A AND B, found out from her after 5 cruises! She said that it is SOOOO LOUD, they have to be under water and listen to all the equipment run, she said they get used to it but I could NEVER! It is like a whole little town under the sea, they have a cafeteria which she did say was not so good, but then again after being on a the same cruise for that long all the food could get old. I also was amazed that they work 80 hours a week, she said it is not bad and they get used to it after a few weeks, they try to make as much money as possible before they go back to there home after the contract is up. Our server was doing it for 2 years already but only worked 6 months on then took 2 months off, then she would come back and do it all over again! Crazy how they can be so chipper and alert and work that much!

There are stewards rooms on deck 8. They are located on the inside and have doors that are very well hidden.

For those of us who are famliliar with the passageways on deck 8, as you go aft past the large suites, there is a jog in the passageway. Some of these rooms are right there, just by the fire hose / standpipe fittings, on the opposite side of the hall from between 8034/8040 on the starboard side, not sure about the port side, but all of that grey space shown on deck 8 is not just for storage.

Looks pretty small!

Looks like my first dorm room in college. :rotfl: :rotfl2: Small...but I guess when you are working up to 16 hours a day, you only need to sleep so the extra space isn't necessary. :confused3 Hard life though I'm sure ( living on a ship). Try living in a sub!! ;) Respect goes out to those who deliver the MAGIC! :grouphug:

We asked our stateroom about how many rooms he has. They all work an average of 15 rooms each. Also, all crew members, except for the captain, stay on decks A and B below deck 1. They just have a room on each deck where all the sheets, towels, etc. are and they go there to grab supplies.
The captain isn't the only one above the waterlline. Actually quite a few crew are above water. We actually discovered two balcony staterooms at the very aft of deck 5 that do not appear on any deckplan. We asked the rebooking CM about them (because we wanted to book one of a future cruise). She hemmed and hawed a bit, and then admitted that they were CM quarters. One room was shared by her, Rachel the Cruise Director, and two other CMs. A few days later, late at night we actually ran into the Cruise Director coming down the hall, and she confirmed that she lived on that deck.

This is also where they "hide" some celebrities. This is where Joey Fatone stayed on the August 2005 eastbound repo cruise ... behind hidden doors in what was referred to as "the crew area."

Cool! :) We found out on our last cruise that there is a stateroom right inside the crew door on deck 8 forward. We first passed it during the life boat drill but there was someone visiting a member of the crew next to us & they kept going in & out of the crew door alot.

There are also rooms for dignitaries/invited guests near the Captain's quarters.

And the crew rooms on Deck 8 are on both Starboard and Port.

I always wondered if there were suites for special guests when they cruise.

We have always stayed on deck 8 and I nevr noticed the cabins there--will have to pay more attention next time.
