What's the best spot for packing a digital camera when going by plane? I want to keep the camera on me so it doesn't get lost or broken, but will the x-ray thingy do anything to it (like I heard it does with regular film)?

Digital isn't affected by the x-rays. I would definitly carry it on!! I do.

that depends on the camera and how much extra gear. My two carryons are always my camera backpack and my laptop case. If I had a P&S I would just put it in my laptop case.

X-rays do not harm digital cameras. Always carry it on - you risk theft if you do otherwise. My equipment goes in my LowePro backback.

Like they said.

I will put my tripod and/or monopod and my giant old 400mm lens in my checked luggage, but all the other camera equipment is carry-on.

If you are carrying film, you can have it hand-checked so that it doesn't go through the X-ray machine. I did this in January going to and from WDW with no problem.

Unless you're carrying ISO1600 film, there aren't any issues with film though the X-ray either.

I always carry my photogear.

I carry a Tamrac Adventure 9

An aluminum case I bought from eBay for less than $20, placed inside my carryon.

Maximum protection without advertising that it's a digital camera.
