When choosing a hotel in Vegas you will want to look at the price for the time you are there (sometimes you can get the expensive ones for cheap during the week if there are no conventions in town) and then what section of the strip you want.
We usually stay with my sister, but when we go in the spring, we'll get a hotel for use of the pool. We have always enjoyed the Tropicana which is inexpensive and at an EXCELLENT location ... MGM, NY NY, Excalibur, Monte Carlo, Luxor. OR you might choose another section which has Treasure Island, Mirage, Ceasar's Palace, etc.
One year we stayed way at one end ... I was exhausted and wanted to go to sleep and my husband wanted to stay up! Well if you are within easy (and safe) walking distance of several casinos, this is not a problem.
There are several nice casinos off the strip too, but I think it is easier if you don't have to get in the car or taxi everytime you want to go somewhere.
Basically, I would look at price, location and your personal interests (if you will be spending lots of time at the pool, pick a hotel that has a nice one).
