Where are these curls coming from?

DS's hair turned curly at 15. My dad said his did the same thing. They both have red, very curly hair.

My hair was always straight until I had surgery 4 years ago...now it will dry wavy and if I use some products it will be curly.

I had dead straight hair as a kid and by a teenager it had a few kinks in it which looked delightful (not!). I discovered hair straighteners which were great but after one or two times I washed my hair and poof it was curly! Like others have said I also leave mine to dry on its own with product in which often means leaving the hours with wet hair (much to my mother's continued dismay!) and only blow dry when I want it straight.

I currently use a John Freida curl define product but I've used L'Oreal ones in the past. It's tough to find a product that does the best for your hair and often if you use too much it can go a bit stiff. Also working out when the best time to put the product in is difficult, usually too wet or too dry and it doesn't work to the best of it's ability. Yes never brush dry curls - it does not look good! I'd also check out shampoo & conditioner for curly hair or if your daughter (I think that's what I read) has frizzy curls then I'd try a frizz reducing shampoo. Getting the right balance of products for curly hair is a skill to be tried and tested! Also depending on the type of curls will depend on the type of hair cuts your daughter will look best with. My hair is really thick with natural barrel curls so if mine is too long the hair is too heavy for a nice natural curl; too short and my hair goes triangular in shape which isn't great.

My DD had long straight hair until about age 10, then a patch on the back of her head started to become kinky/frizzy/curly. Over time, the kinky, curly frizz spread to her whole head but the back is still a slightly different texture than the rest of it. Our Pediatrician tested her thyroid just to be sure as she said sometimes thyroid issues can present with odd changes to hair. She was fine, it was just a change in her overall body chemistry. She battled it for several years and finally cut it all off. Now she has a pixie cut and loves it (I secretly miss her long gorgeous hair BUT I don't miss the maintenance). At first we used to flat iron the frizzy section but as it spread that was no longer practical on a daily basis.
The biggest issue we had was that with all the changes any bit of moisture or movement and that hair became a matted mess. We did braids for all activities for several years.

The best shampoo & conditioner (drug store brands) we found was the Herbal Essence Totally Twisted http://www.drugstore.com/products/prod.asp?

My hairstylist gave DD a Brazilian Blowout when she was 13 and while it helped it seemed to really damage the hair over the long run.

happened to my brother, one of my sons, my sister in law,and 2 of my friends kids. They all had silky straight-ish hair until they were around 12-13 then suddenly they had lots of beautiful curly hair! I love my sons curls now that he's all grown....I never would have guessed when he was little!
