The Widow & the Spinster & the Search for Pele - An Aulani TR - A Lazy (River) Morning 7/11

There should have been an adapter that plugs the car into chargers, but it wasn’t in the car.
Next time I'm just going to pack my extra. It was so stressful! The resort has free chargers but we needed the adaptor to use them. There is one Supercharger on the island but it was way out of the way.

You can never get tired of this view!
I ordered a Junmai Daigingo sake to go with the roll. Jill got a Mai Tai.

She got the Bacon Cheeseburger Sliders. They were tasty. She let me have half of one.

They were quite delicious and hit the spot and you could have more than a half of one. :)

Love seeing your pictures on FB and how happy you both are! The world needs more things to smile about, that's for sure, so thank you for sharing! ❤️ :lovestruc

WOW. Just gorgeous, and what a nice view!! Was your balcony loud overlooking this area of the resort?

Hoping the saga of the charging adaptor ends up being an easy fix!

I had noticed you've been busy on facebook. I'm so happy for you!
Thank you! It's been amazing! And something that I never expected ever again!
I understand not always doing trip reports for every trip (I do the same nowadays)
I'll see if I can finish the two I have going. Then I will see how things go from there.
Nice start to Aulani. The 'Olelo Room is such a great easy way to have dinner as you get settled in.
It was nice and casual, and that roll worked out to be a perfect dinner for me.

Good idea. Better to have one and not need it!
You can never get tired of this view!
No you can't! I'd love to have it again!
First of many on the trip!
Did we have that many?

Not if I wanted to finish my roll!

Thanks! We are both pretty stupid happy right now. Except when each of us leaves the other at home for travel. The next trip for both of us is our first trip together!

We were on some crazy floor like the twelfth so the noise wasn't bad at all.
Hoping the saga of the charging adaptor ends up being an easy fix!
The end is a couple chapters away, but I'm going to update like rapid-fire while I'm staying at Jill's. Hold on!

Day 2 (Saturday)

I woke up at 2AM, which is just about right, because at home I would wake up at 4AM every morning. Some mornings I could go back to sleep and some mornings I just couldn't. This morning in Aulani I was able to go back to sleep and the next time that I woke up was at 5:45AM. I wrote that while we were on the trip (otherwise I would never remember this stuff.) The funny thing is that now that I have a girlfriend, I seem to have no problem sleeping through the night (with the occasional potty break). I don’t seem to wake up in the middle of the night, unable to fall back asleep!

Back to February in Aulani. I did all my morning stuff, and got up to make coffee. I took my coffee out on the Lanai and enjoyed the peaceful morning. I took this picture to send to, let’s call her Callie, my girlfriend (but not girlfriend yet, at the time). She wanted to see a picture of my blue toes on vacation.

16ccf48f-0f59-4824-a2b6-bd3f4ce92b41.jpg

I had to drink like five cups of the coffee because the cups were so darned small! Here is a view of the resort from our balcony.

Jill slept a little longer while I enjoyed the morning, mostly because she could. We had nothing really on the agenda except the spa at 2PM, or so we thought….

When Jill woke up, we each showered and got dressed, and headed down to breakfast at Eggs and Things around 8:30AM. This is not an Aulani restaurant, but in the shopping center across the street. On the way there, we saw a mongoose in the bushes, but it was too fast and I couldn’t get a picture! Here’s a few other pictures that I took on the way.

We put our names in at 8:45 and it was about half an hour until we got a table. We looked in some of the stores nearby. There’s an ABC store in the shopping center. We hoped that we could get a six pack of Diet Dr. Pepper or two, but they only had the individual bottles, like she got at Safeway.

We went back to Eggs and Things and our name was called pretty shortly. We were seated at an outdoor table, and there was a rooster in the bushes keeping an eye on us.

As soon as the patrons left, we coined the phrase, “The Buffet is open!” See the video below.

Jill ordered the Pineapple topped pancakes. She really enjoyed them.

There were all sorts of syrups to use on them.

I got the Loco Moco, and let me just say, I have a new breakfast food love of my life! This was so tasty! The hamburger patty was perfectly cooked, the over easy eggs, made an ooey gooey sauce over the rest of the dish, and the Linguicia gave it just a little bit of spice. It was a HUGE portion and I took half of it back to the room, but it did not go to waste, it was a great breakfast tomorrow.

I do have to say that I have found a place on the mainland that makes this. Not quite as good as Eggs & Things, but it will do in a pinch. We also split a side of bacon, which was unnecessary with my hamburger patty. There was plenty of protein there!

b4de89e2-9363-45f4-b0b2-f889306cf8dc.jpg

Heading back to Aulani we stopped at the parking garage to take another look for the J1772 adapter. We looked all over the car, but no luck. We went back to the room, and Jill called Budget, and the only solution was for us to go back to the airport and get an adapter from the rental agency.

This was really going to mess up our plans!

I really hope to finish the current trip reports, but sadly to say, I may not have the time in the future for more TRs. She keeps me very busy! (Which is a good thing!)
Given she is the sweestest, kind and loving gal, we will allow it (allow I hope that you somehow slide in some sort of TR's)

These rooms are so pretty with their Hawaiian touches, without being over the top at all!

When we last left off, the rental car company had really messed up our plans. We had planned to just hang around the resort for the day, go in the lazy river after breakfast and then visit the spa when our window opened before our treatments.

But it was what it was. The time was 10:30AM. If we left right then, and didn’t hit any traffic, we could make it to the airport and back before 1PM when we could visit the Hydro Therapy Garden at the Spa.

So we hopped in the car and got on the road. Within about 10-15 minutes of driving the navigation told us to take the next exit. I looked at Google maps on my phone and it showed an accident on H1 just before it connected with H2. So us and probably a thousand other folks were routed through single laned streets in Pearl City and the suburbs of Honolulu.

We watched as the estimated arrival time on the navigation slipped farther and farther back. When we got into the car, expected arrival time was 11:26, and by the time I took this photo, we were scheduled to arrive at 12:11PM. If you look through the windshield of the truck in front of us, you can see the line of cars waiting in line.

c8ceb5a3-8d0e-408f-b7f1-2704a50f6214.jpg

When we finally arrived at the Rental Car Return lot, we explained that we weren't returning the car, we just needed an adapter to be able to charge the car. The attendant didn't even bat an eye and said, “I'll get one for you, just pull up to the front and wait there.”

It took several minutes for him to run to the back, but he came back with what we needed. This pesky little thing.

We were on our way back to the resort by 12:20. Here’s what traffic on the H1 looked like going into Honolulu.

7b279bf9-5a0c-4d5d-a00d-ad077a8e284c.jpg

It took us 31 minutes. We made it back to the resort with 9 minutes to spare until our time in the Hydro Therapy Garden opened. We grabbed our bathing Suits and such and raced over to the spa. They checked us in and we waited in the lobby.

It wasn't long until they were taking us on our tour. First you close your eyes and choose a stone from a basket. One side of the stone has your word in Hawaiian, the other side has your word in English. I got Harmony. I thought that was a good word for me.

a40938af-3358-440f-acea-d84669d3f5e2.jpg

Jill got Strength. You're supposed to meditate on that word during your treatment.

Then when we reached the end of the hallway, we came to a pool. You made a wish on your stone, and gently returned it to the pool.

Then we received a tour of the Hydro Therapy Garden. First she showed us where we would go to wait for our therapist to find us. These were anti gravity chairs.

There was this room which had refreshments and loungers.

In the actual gardens, one pool was 90°F (the farthest one in the picture) the other was, I think, 102°.

This picture shows the hottest Tub (104°) and the cold plunge.

And then they had these loungers all over the area.

6befe89f-c9a0-46ed-b82c-f4f427e7851d.jpg

Then they led us into the locker area, there was a steam room and a sauna. We were assigned lockers and then changed into our swim suits to enjoy the pools before our treatments.

We tried each of the pools starting with the 90° pool and moved up in order of increasing temperatures. The hottest pool was the most popular. There were people in there from Saskatchewan, and Michigan so they won for escaping the coldest temperatures, but Jill won for escaping the most snow.

Our time in the pools was too short because they were soon calling everyone with a 2PM appointment to go to the locker room and change into our robes.

We laid down in the room with the zero gravity loungers and awaited our therapists. We were called quickly and taken to our treatment rooms.

I booked the KilliKilli treatment. This was basically a massage under a Vichy Shower. If you've never heard of a Vichy Shower, here's what one looks like.

ba26eb4e-0437-4ea5-843a-17292af1b3c4.jpg

Basically you're in a “wet room” where there are drains in the floor, and the shower is immersing you in warm water the whole time during your massage. It's a light massage. The attendant first used a Plumeria scented (my choice of four scents, coconut, peach, and another floral) body Scrub. Then she rinsed it off with warm water. I think she might have applied something else after that and gently rubbed down my muscles before moving on to the next body part.

At first when she finished my leg, I thought this is going to be such a light treatment that I'll barely feel it, but by the time that it came to roll me over onto my back, I could tell that I was definitely going to be feeling this treatment later. By the end I was so relaxed that I almost fell asleep.

Meanwhile Jill had a complete body scrub with a pineapple scented exfoliant. She commented to her therapist, “I smell like a Dole Whip.” as she went to shower off the scrub.

Then she laid down for a Wai Lomilomi Full body massage. After our treatments we both agreed we would rather just go back to the room than go back out to the Hydro Therapy Garden. So we got dressed, paid the bill and left. They had a cute little gift where they asked what Stone we drew at the beginning and they gave us “back” the stone in ground form of bath salts.

a1de5210-59b4-453c-a4b1-ef831c238634.jpg

Back in the room we chilled for a bit before I started working on dinner. I put the potato in the oven first since it took the longest. I had purchased these steaks on the mainland. I kept them in their original packaging because you are allowed to bring meat on the islands as long as it originated in America. I also made a packet of seasoning for the steaks.

7cb94ceb-874a-4f38-9481-b6e72ffc57a3.jpg

Then I seasoned the steaks and cut up the beans. As the potato was approaching doneness, we headed down to the grills to cook the steaks. The grill didn't heat up as nicely as my grill at home and it took a little longer than expected.

479accab-6eb9-4f39-ae0f-92af31cceeca.jpg

I was able to do the finger test for doneness and luckily they came out perfectly medium rare. Just as we were leaving, the gentleman from Michigan who we met in the hot tub at the spa earlier in the day came up with a plate of meat. He asked us to leave the grill on so it was hot n ready for him to cook his steaks.

Back in the room, we set the table with our feast.

No wonder Hertz lost their shirts with EV rentals. I've driven one since 2018 and I knew what I was doing but they didn't explain anything or provide the dang adaptor so the EV newbie wouldn't have known or been able to use it. The traffic was just the cherry on top. Oh well, everything was good after that.

Day 3 (Sunday)

I woke up again at 2AM, which was almost six and a half hours after I went to sleep, but still too darned early to get up. I laid awake for another two hours with all kinds of crazy things running through my head. Finally at 4AM I decided to take a bath. I was back in bed before 5AM and I think I got another hour or so of sleep because I woke up at 6:26.

Because of yesterday's adapter debacle and having to go back to the airport, we didn't get to take a turn in the lazy river. By the time we got out of the spa, it was like “kid soup”, plus we were both too relaxed to try it at that point.

This morning we planned to do it first thing in the morning before it got too busy. I made coffee and ate my leftover Loco moco. It was so good!

5cedf8f2-0208-4132-a571-345e3a75c7c3.jpg

Jill had bought these nifty water proof pouches for our phones. Well she bought it for her phone, but it came in a two pack, so she let me have the other one.

f5638ecb-59a3-4eee-b4ec-1de571c8a3ae.jpg

We went down to the lazy river, got our wrist bands and tubes and we were off!

We just sat in our little tubes and let the current move us around. A lot of the families in the river were using dad power to push the kids in the double tubes, and a lot of kids didn't understand the “lazy” part of the lazy river. They were swimming along without a floating device kicking up water and splashing around.

We each showered to rinse the chlorine off of us, and then we were ready to really start our day!

By the time we got out of the spa, it was like “kid soup”, plus we were both too relaxed to try it at that point.
Kid soup is gross!
Jill had bought these nifty water proof pouches for our phones. Well she bought it for her phone, but it came in a two pack, so she let me have the other one.

They worked really well and were cheap on Amazon!
We just sat in our little tubes and let the current move us around.
It was fantastic! Great way to spend some down time.

Jill in CO

Huh!! I had zero idea that cooking at Aulani was a thing. Dinner looked fantastic; haven't had a good steak in a long, long while!

LOVED the spa day stuff. I've never seen anything like that before with the jets. I could get used to that!

Yeah, one of them was on my way to visit you!
But you made it. :)
Of course they are! I made them!
Fair enough!
And definitely not on a hotel breakfast buffet. You need to try them in a place like this that specializes in comfort food!
Oh, I know. I would very much like to try that somewhere other than a hotel cheapo buffet. Heck, just about anywhere else.
Jill has got mad skilz!
Well thank you! You should see the sh** eating grin I have on my face daily now!
:goodvibes
There should have been an adapter that plugs the car into chargers, but it wasn’t in the car.
:headache:
That's pretty inexcusable, really.
the Bellman told her that Amazon doesn’t work the same way on the islands as it does in the mainland. He said it could take days to arrive.
Not surprised by that.
I took pictures of the room.
Huge! And very nice.
Our room overlooked the lazy river.
Nice views!
I saw this Menehuene in the elevator.
You saw a what now?
We were seated at a nice outdoor table. There was a duo playing Hawaiian style music.
:cloud9:
Look at those smiles. :)
I got the Godzilla Roll with Spicy Ahi Tuna, crab, Avocado, Kabayaki, bang bang sauce, and crunchy tempura flake.
Yum!
Look at the cute mickey wasabi!
Thanks for pointing it out... would've missed it.
She got the Bacon Cheeseburger Sliders. They were tasty. She let me have half of one.
mmm... sliders...
This morning in Aulani I was able to go back to sleep and the next time that I woke up was at 5:45AM.
At least you got back to sleep... this time.
The funny thing is that now that I have a girlfriend, I seem to have no problem sleeping through the night (with the occasional potty break). I don’t seem to wake up in the middle of the night, unable to fall back asleep!
:)
I had to drink like five cups of the coffee because the cups were so darned small!
Fetch me another!
On the way there, we saw a mongoose in the bushes
No way! Cool!
We were seated at an outdoor table, and there was a rooster in the bushes keeping an eye on us.
I remember all the chickens running around. ::yes::
These Myna birds with were hanging around waiting for the tables to become vacant.
Remember that too!
Jill ordered the Pineapple topped pancakes. She really enjoyed them.
Huh... pineapple you say? Never tried that. Might have to.
There were all sorts of syrups to use on them.
The snobby-syrup Canadian rears his head...
I got the Loco Moco, and let me just say, I have a new breakfast food love of my life! This was so tasty!
Oh, I love Loco Moco. I had Googled the best place to have it and went there, just for that. Sooo good!
But not something you'd want to eat every day!
I do have to say that I have found a place on the mainland that makes this. Not quite as good as Eggs & Things, but it will do in a pinch.
I've never seen it again. I have made it, however. :) (Wasn't as good.)
the only solution was for us to go back to the airport and get an adapter from the rental agency.
:sad2:
They should've brought it out to you. Inexcusable.
If we left right then, and didn’t hit any traffic, we could make it to the airport and back before 1PM when we could visit the Hydro Therapy Garden at the Spa.
:scared:
Nothing like being stressed out before a spa day.
So us and probably a thousand other folks were routed through single laned streets in Pearl City and the suburbs of Honolulu.
:headache:
If you look through the windshield of the truck in front of us, you can see the line of cars waiting in line.
Ugh...
The attendant didn't even bat an eye and said, “I'll get one for you, just pull up to the front and wait there.”
:sad2:
Not even an apology...
Here’s what traffic on the H1 looked like going into Honolulu.
Yikes! I bet you were glad to be going in the opposite direction!
We made it back to the resort with 9 minutes to spare until our time in the Hydro Therapy Garden opened.
:faint:
First you close your eyes and choose a stone from a basket. One side of the stone has your word in Hawaiian, the other side has your word in English. I got Harmony. I thought that was a good word for me.
Nice little touch. :)
This picture shows the hottest Tub (104°) and the cold plunge.
Guessing you didn't try the cold plunge?
There were people in there from Saskatchewan, and Michigan so they won for escaping the coldest temperatures
but Jill won for escaping the most snow.
This I have no doubt!
This was basically a massage under a Vichy Shower. If you've never heard of a Vichy Shower, here's what one looks like.
Did the shower heads move? Or were they stationary?
By the end I was so relaxed that I almost fell asleep.
ahhhhh... :cloud9:
Meanwhile Jill had a complete body scrub with a pineapple scented exfoliant. She commented to her therapist, “I smell like a Dole Whip.” as she went to shower off the scrub.
:lmao:
They had a cute little gift where they asked what Stone we drew at the beginning and they gave us “back” the stone in ground form of bath salts.
Like that. :)
you are allowed to bring meat on the islands as long as it originated in America.
Really! I'm surprised. Would've thought that'd be a no-no. Huh.
they came out perfectly medium rare.
:thumbsup2
Back in the room, we set the table with our feast.
Looks really good. I need a steak, now.
I woke up again at 2AM, which was almost six and a half hours after I went to sleep, but still too darned early to get up.
Go back to bed!!!
we didn't get to take a turn in the lazy river. By the time we got out of the spa, it was like “kid soup”,
Ew...

ate my leftover Loco moco. It was so good!
How could it not be. :)
Jill had bought these nifty water proof pouches for our phones.
::yes::
I've used those.
a lot of kids didn't understand the “lazy” part of the lazy river.
Yeah... that's pretty common. They need an adults only lazy river... with cocktails...
They were swimming along without a floating device kicking up water and splashing around.
Ugh. :sad2:
You look pretty relaxed and happy. :)
I got nailed by a few of the water features
So... were you annoyed by that? Or laughing?
This is a view of the snorkeling area, which we never made it to.
I remember that. (Although we only visited, didn't stay.)
The beach area…
Wow! It's really different now. When we visited, there was nothing on the beach.
