That particular practice generally makes me smile because someone has a positive outlook on life and goes around assuming that people are "sweet" and "dear" and good things about them rather than assuming they aren't worth a pleasant word or a smile.

I get those endearments a lot, but it doesn't bother me. I figure they could call me a lot worse. LOL!
I take it like it's intended.

I have accidently used them a couple times with my bil. My sil didn't like it one bit.

LOL Serena, I did that too with my BIL! "Thanks sweetie!" I said to him. My SIL was not around, but my kids thought it was hysterical! He sure shot me a look, but we all had a good laugh.

BTW, I am laughing about the posts saying that the use of these kinds of endearments to strangers is a southern thing. I'm from the Bronx originally, maybe I'm a southerner at heart!

My BIL, also from the Bronx, always says "Yo!" to get someone's attention. I always cringe! I think I prefer hun and sweetie!

The only people that I have used endearments for are people that I am friends with. I might walk up to a good friend and saying, "Hey there, sweetie pie". However, I don't comfortable saying that to someone I don't know.

The only time it grates on my nerves, is when it is being said by some young 20 year old sales girl. Not enough to mess up my day or for me to say anything, just enough for me to roll my eyes as I walk away

My grandaddy used to deliver newspapers,and when I was little, I would ride with him to go collect from his customers. (Out in the country in eastern NC) He would always call his male customers "Dick" and his female customers "Sis" Like, "Thanks, Sis. See you next month"

It doesn't bother me at all. It's just a way for somebody to be personal when they obviously don't know your name. I try to not be offended by people who are only trying to be nice.

Yes, I admit it. I call the young male cashiers at the grocery store "hun". DH doesn't mind at all...as a matter of fact, I don't think he even notices.

I call a student now and then hon, think it goes back to my favorite teacher of all time using that word.

However, what bugs me is our "phone nurse" at our doctor's office calling everyone honey. She talks in a voice that you would use to a 5 year old!! Drives me nuts!!

It is a habit I picked up from my Mom. I know DH hates it but everyone is hon. I don't mean to offend anyone, it just slips out. Actually after it slips out I am usually apologizing.
