When to upgrade tickets to an AP

I am taking a large group next month and everyone has 2 day hopper tickets. If someone in the group wants to upgrade those tickets to an annual pass, do they have to do that before they visit on their 2nd day (like Disney), or can they upgrade that ticket on the 2nd day after they've redeemed their full current ticket as well?

I hope that made some sort of sense to all of you. This group has a tendency for deciding to do things last minute. lol

I *think* they can do it on the second day without a problem.
Years back, Universal let my family change our 5 day tickets to an annual pass MONTHS after we had used them. But I'm pretty sure they don't do that anymore.
