My family is thinking of camping at Fort Wilderness in early June 2005. How far in advance should our reservations be made? Also, if we book a preferred campsite location, is it possible to walk to the marina? The distance is difficult to judge from the map of Fort Wilderness that we got off the internet.

Booking early gives you that much more time to look forward to your FW and WDW stay. The later you wait the greater the chance for sites to fill up.

100, 200, 400 loops are close to marina and 300, 700 are the closest pet loops to the marina. Easy walk for most to water.

I always book the minute I even think that we "might" be going!!!

If you do a room only rate when you make the reservation, you only have to pay one night's stay and have up to a few days before to cancel with a full refund.

Book today. Right now would be a good time.
30 Days and counting.

Happy Camping:bounce:

Florida Teacher: believe it or not, I know exactly where Paxton, FL is!! Also, know it is the highest point in FL. When I was in high school, we used to play basketball against you. I am from Chumuckla. It used to have a high school, but was consolidated the year I graduated with two other "extremely small schools" and is called Central now. It's a small world!
Will be camping this Friday for a week (during our Ivan-extended Fall break!)

watshakinranch,
You mentioned your "Ivan-extended Fall break". When are you guys expected to be back in school - do you typically have a break at this time or is it strickly Ivan related? We will be heading down next weekend and was wondering how busy it might be if the schools are still closed. Hope you didn't have any damage at your home.

Rapriebe: I live in NW FL, so I am not sure what the local Orlando schools are doing. Escambia and Santa Rosa were scheduled for a week fall break OCT 4-7, but the kids have been out of school since the day before Ivan which was Sept 14. They do not go back until OCT 11. One month of stir-crazy children who do not understand why the Dish Network doesn't work!!
I had planned this Disney trip before the hurricanes, so I have been watching The Weather Channel quite faithfully!
I'm not sure if or when South Florida takes a Fall break. I know when I went on the Disney cruise last year at this time, there were LOTS of families from NW FL going on the FAll break. It is so depressing around here, many more may decide to head to Disney, but on the other hand, there are so many here that were greatly (and unexpectedly) affected by the storm, they may not be able to go.
Many were caught unaware with Ivan. He came ashore with high tide and flooded places far inland that had never flooded before. I mean, if a 30-40 foot wave could take the I-10 bridge out, something was not right in the universe. That bridge is several miles inland on a small bay!!
Perhaps some of the other readers are local and can tell you more. The kids in South Florida have been through 3 hurricanes, so they are probably lucky to get a Christmas break! Unless ol' Jeb decides to tack the days at the end of the school year or shorten the mandatory days of school.
Who knows....I'm going to Disney World!

Watshakinranch,

It is a small world - how cool is that!!! You are among a select group to be able to say you know where Paxton, Florida is. I've been here all my life, graduated from Paxton High School and now teach middle school math and history there.:D

You and your neighbors are in my thoughts and prayers in the aftermath of Ivan. We had some damage, but nothing that compares to Okaloosa, Santa Rosa, and Escambia. The I-10 bridge damage is just unbelievable.

I am praying that Hurricane season is through with Florida this year, we've had more than our share!!! Trying to put it all behind us and concentrate on our upcoming halloween trip to FW. Let us know how FW looks when you get back, hope they've not suffered too much damage. Enjoy your "extended" fall break.

Happy Camping.

We are going in June 2005 I booked it in feb. and called in Aug and got AAA discount just waiting for more discounts to come out:)

Book right away!! Especially if your trip involves a weekend!! Many locals spend their weekends at the Fort and it is really hard to get weekend nights.

I had a terrible time getting weekend nights at any price for my 7-night stay in December and that is more than 60 days from now!!

Carol
