how do guests of Grand Floridian, Polynesian and the Contemporary get to Magic Kingdom? I assume these resorts have "emergency" bus service in this case. Whatever the transportation is, would you say it's done in a timely manner?

Contemporary: They walk. To be honest, taking the monorail from CR to Magic Kingdom is the slowest possible way to get there, because they have to go to the TTC on the resort monorail, then transfer to the express monorail anyway. By the time they get to the TTC and switch, they'd be through MK security had they walked. Monorail is only worthwhile as a return mechanism from MK to CR.

GF and Poly: Have a boat on the regular. They also get bus backup.

Umm, when the monorail is running, you can also take the resort monorail from the CR all the way to the MK. You do have to stop at the TTC, Poly and GF before getting there, though, but you do not HAVE to switch to the express at the TTC. (of course, you CAN if you want to)

Meanwhile, walking is great from the CR to the MK. You literally do not have to worry at all about the monorail running in order to get to the MK.

Well, okay, yeah. I'm sticking to "monorail is inefficient getting to MK," either way. o_O

We've stayed at the GF twice since they started the whatever it is they're doing to try and improve the monorail. First trip it never affected us- 2nd trip we had to bus it over to MK for a pre park opening ADR. That was a pain and we were late. There were inconsistencies from CMs as to whether the boats would run early, so we went with the bus option. The bus driver must have been new because she started driving us to Epcot before realizing her mistake. The bus also took awhile. However getting a bus to Epcot the next day was easy.

My advice is to build in a ton of extra travel time if you have a pre opening ADR at MK or Epcot if the monorail is down, unless you're at CR and can walk to MK. They have a schedule at the front desk for when the monorail is closed. Get that at check in.

We stayed at the GF last week, our first time at a monorail hotel, and found the ferry system to be inefficient and frustrating, so we didn't take it at all unless forced to - which we were in the last day due to a MR outage.

First night, we tried to take it from MK to GF. After waiting awhile, my three year old decided she needed the bathroom. The boat was still there when we got back and it wasn't full, yet they were just "casting off" and couldn't get us onboard. We took the MR back.

The next day we decided to try it from GF to MK. We waited awhile before it came, then learned it stopped at the Poly afterwards. I'm sure this is well-known but it wasn't to us. We were still waiting for the ferry at GF when we saw a MR go by, so we could have gotten there in the time it took to even board the boat. The trip cut too close to our first FP window, so I rebooked it once I realized we were on our way to the Poly (would have made it easy with the MR). We also had to fold down our stroller, which was not required on the MR.

After that, we avoided the ferries until the last day. We checked out and took the MR to MK for a few hours before our DME scheduled pickup at 3:50. Around 2:30, we headed back only to find all MR trains were out of service. There was already a long line waiting for the GF/Poly boat, but we didn't have much choice but to get in line and wait (we were told there were buses available but we felt it was safer to wait for the option we knew, rather than try to find a bus, stop at multiple hotels, etc.). We waited about 20 minutes until a tiny 30-40 person ferry showed up (the kind with the canopy and wood seats). They filled half the boat with scooters and wheelchairs first, then a few from the line, which was probably a couple hundred deep by then. Up to that point, we were waiting in shade, but this now forced us into the sun where we waited for another 20 minutes. In the meantime, we were seeing big boats at other docks leaving maybe 20% full with barely any lines. The next boat was bigger (could handle 140) and after some stressing, we made it on. The line was now probably about 400 deep, backed all the way to where the MR ramp starts. We finally got back to the GF with about 10 minutes to spare for our bus ride.

My biggest complaints were that there was no warning of the upcoming outage earlier; if it was unplanned outage, they should have out more boats in circulation; they should adjust the size of the boats going to the GF/Poly; and they should cover the entire waiting area. I can't imagine what it would be like if this happened in July. The CM on the dock also didn't walk along the line to reassure people - there was zero communication, no posted boat schedule, etc.

So...long story short, if you have a hard deadline to get back to the resort or another destination, allow PLENTY of time just in case the MR is out!

See, we had the exact opposite experience with the boats. We always take the monorail to magic kingdom. The resort monorail was only down on Tuesdays during our stay. We'd take the boats back from MK.

Sounds like you guys had a run of rotten luck with transportation issues. That just stinks. It's not the norm though, based on our stays at GF and Poly. But that does not make you feel better!

I know things can happen, but it was still really annoying (and for about an hour REALLY distressing!) on our last day after a fantastic vacation. We were sweating in the sun and felt like we were stinking up the place. You should have seen us on the DME - standing in the back with our arms raised under the AC vents to cool/dry our shirts out, ha. Next time I will also anticipate hot weather in general and remember to pack deodorant and extra shirts in our carry-on.

I did read rumors of MR shutdowns before our trip and when we arrived, I asked the concierge at the lounge about it. She acted like she knew nothing and said there were no outages scheduled for the upcoming week. I was really relieved that it wasn't as bad as I expected, and I don't think the issue would have been as bad if we weren't leaving that day. We also didn't mind the long MR trip back to the hotel from MK. It was always nice to board the train with AC, get a seat, not have to fold the stroller down, and relax for a little bit with a nice tour.

I will mention this weird tidbit from my December trip. We were trying to get to Poly for a dinner reservation at Ohana from Contemporary. The Resort line was experiencing the weirdest delays, no idea what it was but it was about 20 minutes inbetween trains. So they literally stopped the express monorail at the contemporary, boarded folks on to the front car, and then continued on to the MK. We stayed on until the transportation center and then walked over from there. Contemporary is the only resort with this capability since the monorail station splits the two tracks unlike Grand Floridian and Polynesian.

Very helpful, thanks! Arriving 10 minutes before DME pickup is really cutting it close! Will they wait for late arrivals? Can you schedule another one if you're late?

If the wait had been any longer, I would have called the hotel bell desk or front desk and let them know what was happening. They probably could have waited a little bit, given we were catching the bus almost three hours before our flight, but not that much longer. Once we boarded, we probably only waited about 5 minutes before it departed (it was mostly empty and it didn't stop anywhere else along the way). When we finally got to the GF, we still had to race from the dock to the entry and get our luggage from the bell desk as well. If we had missed it completely, I'm guessing we would have been facing an expensive cab ride to the airport!

This is a HUGE issue and a reason I won't be staying at the GF or Poly for a while again. For early mornings at the MK, it is incredibly stressful trying to get there in time. No one seems to know how to do it even at the resort. Poly had to call us a cab on our last trip earlier this month to get there, then the cabbie was PO'd because he had to drop us off at the Contemporary and walk since he wasn't even allowed to bring us to the MK.

Buses were "supposed to be running", monorail was "supposed to start at 7" and neither were happening by 7:20 and we had Early morning magic booked.

Another morning we took the boat - we weren't in as big of a rush but we wanted to see the opening show and make rope drop. Monorail again supposed to be running but wasn't. Boat took about 15 minutes waiting on the Poly dock for it to arrive. Small boat, and it took a total of about 35 minutes for us to get to the bag check.

I've never considered the monorail to be a benefit to staying at a monorail served resort. It has way too many issues and when it's screwed up, it's major. The boats simply can't move enough people to make up for the loss in the monorail. They are great supplements but that's it. We were at CR in April and the monorail was out so they even offered a bus to get to MK. I guess for folks that didn't want to walk. We always walk from CR

How did a cab driver not know this? A guest I can see not knowing, many do not know that only Disney buses can go to the MK drop off. But a cab driver assigned to Disney? Should be in the top 5 of things they learn before their first day.

Oh he knew, it was the Poly front desk he was mad at - they requested we be dropped off at the MK, and he drove off muttering something about it. I told him to drop us off at the Contemporary and we'd walk.

I think he was peeved because his ticket said "MK" and so he had to ask me to change it to the Contemporary so he would get paid for the trip there? IDK. Anyway the whole thing was just ridiculous. Getting to the MK before 8am should NOT be so difficult.

Walking from the CR to MK is much quicker than the monorail, although it is about a 10minute walk. My son wanted to ride the monorail, so my wife (and entourage) took the monorail while I hoofed it over there with the stroller. I was thru bag check while they were just pulling into the Poly. However, from the MK to the CR, it is much nicer (and faster) to take the monorail. By then we're hot and tired, and nobody feels like walking anymore than we have to!
