Also, when I taught 5th grade, merry and marry were words on the kids' spelling list of homophones -- so, at least McGraw Hill textbook company thought the two sounded alike too!

lyzziesmom said:This is more of a regional accent thing. My family is all from Minnesota and everyone there says "kyoopon". I think it's weird when I hear it the other way!

When people use words that aren't even words...
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
It drives me crazy.
http://www.bartleby.com/64/C007/052.htmlThis word, which was borrowed from French in the 19th century, was originally pronounced (koo´pon´´). The variant pronunciation (kyoo´pon´´) developed in American English perhaps through association with words such as cube, cupid, and cute. Both pronunciations are acceptable.

The other word they say a lot is MINES. This one would be OK if they were referring to dark places under the ground, but they use it as "That is mines, not yours." Grrrrrrr.

Well I say them both with a sound somewhere between a long a and short a. Berry and Harry also rhyme to me.
