When people use words that aren't even words...

I suffer daily with my speech and English degrees living in Georgia....

You guys hit on just about all of my pet peeves but of course I have a few more:

Pronouncing the L in Salmon....

Saying a child is one YEARS old

Saying Ofra instead of Oprah :badpc:

Ending a sentence with a preposition... where do you live AT?????

My dad says Chi-car-go (Chicago). Makes me giggle. :rotfl:

Jewlery instead of jewelry and wonder instead of wander drive me insane!!!

Also "kyoopon" instead of "coupon".

This is more of a regional accent thing. My family is all from Minnesota and everyone there says "kyoopon". I think it's weird when I hear it the other way!

I heard this gem from Mr. Bob Saget on his new show, 1 vs. 100.

He combined a word not fit for the Dis with giggles, and said, "Just for shiggles..." I had no choice but to throw things at the television after that.

Dang, you beat me to it. I can't ever take him seriously when I hear that. Even though I've read articles about Texas dialect and things.

Bush: Iran, you can't have nukular facilities.

Iran: Hee-hee. He said nukular.

I know. Cracks me up everytime!! :lmao:

Instead of a record album, my DH calls them alblums. Where in the world does that other L come from?!? It drives me crazy.

I've worked as a writer and an editor, so this stuff drives me nuts.

Food Network types who always say "Mars-ca-pone" cheese (for Mascarpone).

Using "myriad" as a noun.

Saying "of" instead of "have" as in "should of" instead of "should have." (Saying it is bad enough, but people write it, too).

Instead of breaKfast, DH says "breafast". Leaves out the "K" every single time. You'd think it'd get less irritating after 15 years, wouldn't you?

Another irritating one: I "seen" that movie or whatever. It's have seen or saw, Darling Husband, please say it correctly once before I die!
Ahhhhhh I have your same dillema! Do you tell your husband? If I try to "correct" mine, he gets pissed. He has the don't doesn't issue as well as the seen saw.

I was watching Dog The Bounty Hunter the other day and he was calling it ValentiMe's day as well. And speaking of Walmart....I hear people say WalmarK or KmarK. WTH?

I know that "should of" is wrong written, but how do you pronounce should've??

Not the spoken word, but the written word:

should OF
could OF
would OF

If I would've written any of those like the above when I was in grade school, the nuns would've beaten me to within an inch of my life (and they should've) :rotfl:

I have a co-worker who makes me cringe every time she talks her grammar is so bad. But what's really bad is when she talks to our customers on the phone, she says things like was for were or seen for saw, but the absolute best is you guyses. You guyses??? I swear our customers must think we're a bunch of idiots!!

I still want to know how people are supposed to pronounce "could've?" I cringe when I see people write "could of" and "should of." But to those whom it annoys that people SAY the words, how do you think they should be pronounced?

My husband has a bizarre inability to remember or pronounce street names correctly.

Where we used to live, our cross streets were Rancho Drive and Sahara Avenue, and he would always say 'Ranchero and Sierra". He is not allowed to give directions to anyone anymore.

I am guilty of this one. But I only say "of" instead of "have" when I'm around friends and I'm just not thinking clearly. Around any one else, especially the office or if I write it out, I use "have".

"Prolly" instead of "probably". This annoys the heck out of me. DBF uses it all the time and I am ready to smack him one. The word doesn't even make any sense.

"Birfday". I hate hearing that word. It makes me cringe. Is it so hard to say it correctly?

I don't know why this is, but here in brooklyn when you go in a diner they ask if you want a table or a BOOF. what the heck is a boof? isnt it booth? :rotfl2:

Should've is pronounced like "should have" but without the H. "Shouldave" rather than "Shouldove," if that makes any sense. Same for the others.

2 that get me are prolly (probably)

and when people pronounce calamari

CAL A MARY instead of gal a maad

birfday for birthday

Oohhh, my DH is a good one for that one. He still says "bafroom" instead of baTHroom. My FIL is also a good one for substituting "F's" for "TH's" and he's in his late 70's (but he also wasn't born in this country either).

Me, I find that I'll usually add a "ish" to words when I'm trying to describe something. So, I guess I kind of (or in the NY way, "kinda") make up my own words.

Btw, there was a thread on here over the Thanksgiving weekend that had a link to a cute 10 question quiz. The questions gave a few words and asked if they sounded alike or different. Depending on your answer, the results would tell you what state you are from.

:lmao: Well I thought it was only little children that made the f sound in a lot of th words. My 6 y.o. dd is finally starting to grow out of that.
