When does school start for the year for your kids?

In NYC public schools, the students start the day after Labor Day and the teachers (like myself) begin the Thursday before Labor Day.

How about in your area? When do they start?

We live in Atlanta and my son's school will start on August 11th for the 2008-2009 school year.

I'm in Ontario Canada and the kids start here the day after Labour Day.

For the 2008- 2009 school year, my DS's school starts on August 25.
They used to start the first Tuesday in August, and then they got a week off in October. The TEA (Texas Education Administration) changed some laws and our district can no longer start that early.

Here in my area of Northern NJ the kids have always(at least since I started school in 1976) gone back to school the Wednesday after Labor Day. Teachers start the day after Labor Day.

In the Kansas City area the kids usually go back the middle of August and then get out right around Memorial Day.

I'm in MA a few miles north of Boston. The kids go back the Tuesday before Labor Day and have Friday/Monday off. This year the last day of school I think is June 17th (if no snow days).

Chicago schools start after Labor Day but the suburbs start around August 22

Here in Saskatchewan School starts the Thursday befoe Labor Day and ends the last week of June.

Last year Minnesota passed a law that school could not start before Labor Day. This went into effect for this school year.

My DD's will go back on August 18, 2008.

By act of the FL Legislature, starting in 2007, public schools can not start more than two weeks prior to Labor Day. I've heard rumors that some legislators MAY introduce legislation this year making the start date of schools even later.

We start homeschooling in August because that allows us to finish in May. Just in time for our family trip to Disney.

We are at the Jersey Shore (Southern NJ) and our town had the kids going back right before Labor Day weekend. Each town in our county does it differently...just depends on the individual school boards.

In Boston (parochial school), we start the Wednesday after Labor Day, with three half days. Full days begin the followng week. We'll end sometime in the middle of June, depending on snow days...
