When Do You Take Down Your Holiday Decorations?

Heck! I never even finished putting mine up. Mine went up late and in stages and I never really finished the tree. I want to keep them up until next weekend but I'm having surgery on Thursday so I'll probably not want to mess with taking them down right after. So I'll probably take them down in stages this week. I really enjoy the lights so I'll be depressed.

Because I'm a teacher, I need to have my decorations taken down before school starts back up. Otherwise, I'm too tired and too busy to do it, and it will never get done. I wish I can keep to the tradition of the twelve days of Christmas, though! Basically, I follow what my mother (also a teacher but a stay-at-home mom for many years) did when I was growing up: decorations out right after Thanksgiving, down starting January 2nd, done by the end of the first week of January. She didn't like have a bare house afterwards and thought it was too depressing to have no more decorations out, so she would take out her snowmen stuff until Valentine's Day. I've started doing the same thing now that I live on my own.

I usually keep the tree up past New Years, but this year it came down today. The tree started dying right after we bought it. I'm surprised it lasted to Christmas! I will take the rest of the decorations down the weekend after New Years.

Our contract states that the exterior decorations must be removed by Jan. 5th, and the interior decorations by Jan. 7th. They've already removed and packed up the outside stuff and it looks like they will be here on the 4th to take care of the interior. I'm holidayed out so I'm ready for it all to go away til next year.

Probably tomorrow or Monday or when I feel better, blessed with a cold this Christmas.

That's very early to take down your decorations, especially when you are sick. I decluttered/gave away all our holiday stuff last year when we moved, so we didn't have any to put up this year. Waiting for post holiday sales to buy new decorations that will fit into our new storage locker.
Hope you get well soon!

My parents(due to being busy all December) have their Christmas parties post holidays. So they leave decorations (including live trees) up until they have all their diff parties which at times has run into Feb. They keep the trees well watered.

All my snowman things will stay up until mid-March. The tree and other Christmas things will come down sometime after January 6th

We do the same. All winter themed decorations stay up until we finally tire of winter. Since we have a fresh cut tree, we are never in a rush to take it down.

Probably January 1 or 2. It depends on whether or not the kittens continue to leave it alone. i didn't put up most of them this year.
Liz

It sounded more like the management of a strip shopping center/professional building when exterior and interior holiday decorations of individuals stores or offices must be taken down.

I HOPE it's not for a private home. I can see a HOA demanding removal of exterior décor by a certain date, but interior???!!!

Hopefully he will come back to answer your question.

Just curious and I know this is a little OT, but what happens if you just ignore the ridiculous demands of an HOA? HOA's are really not a "thing" here aside from possibly condo boards in multi-family complexes.

If they're in your HOA agreement they can fine you per the agreement and attach a lien on your property. If it's a CC&R the city can fine you.

My cousin lives under the jurisdiction of the Elbow Valley Homeowners assocaition in Calgary. Pretty strict HOA rules there.http://elbowvalley.org/regulation.htm

Says you can be fined, but I don't see if there are set fines, or just whatever the board wants.

Everything came down this morning. I would have done it sooner but we were away all day x-mas day and the 26th and I worked all day yesterday. Once x-mas is over I want all the decorations and tree gone. I will admit I am not a huge fan of x-mas in the first place.

I presume you must know Elbow Valley is one of the most expensive and exclusive neighbourhoods in the entire province of Alberta. Far, far from the norm.

I have a neighbor who started decorating for Halloween in August and will switch over to Valentine's Day in about 2 weeks. He uses flashing strobe lights, it's pretty annoying and has expanded to be almost 6 full months at this point. This year the city got involved so now he's had to switch to flood lights. Hopefully he won't do Valentine's this year, but I'm not too hopeful.

I knew it wasn't a middle class neighborhood.....but there is a 1700 square foot, 4 bedroom, 3 bath house for sale on his street for under $900,000 Not sure what Canadian City all those Love it Or List it houses are in, but there have been many in those cities that were just plain middle class, under 1,500 square feet, for over $1 million. It is funny now that they are in North Carolina and they featured a 2,200 square foot house worth $189,000 !

Point was that there are not very many HOA communities around - Elbow Valley is in a class practically by itself (regardless of how much condos cost in down town Vancouver)...
