When do you kids go back to school?

DD12 is in middle school (7th grade). we live in NE alabama, and her first day of school is august 9th. they usually get out for the summer around may 28th or 29th. i've lived here all my life, and attended the same school DD attends now-when i went there, we went back to school around august 31st-september 1st.

in SC all schools start the 3rd week of Aug, by state law. Where I work, teachers report Aug 10th, kids on the 16th. District I live in, kids start Aug. 18th.

I have family in NJ, the districts set their own calendars. Usually they start a few days after Labor Day. This year my niece starts the week before, has Mon. off for Labor Day, goes Tues/Wed, then is off Thurs/Fri for Jewish holidays. DSis is considering a trip to WDW that week lol.

It is state law in NC that all traditional calendar public schools start no later than 8/25 and end no sooner than 6/10. There are a few counties that have a special exemption due to snow (the mountain counties in the NW corner of the state), and some year-round schools in the state, but the vast majority start on 8/25 each year and end on 6/10.

Reno, NV checking in:
1st day of classes for DS at the Univ. of NV Reno, Aug 23 (OMG he is a JR already!)
DD who attends a local charter school, Aug 30
The local district varies depending on type of calendar; traditional, multi track or single track.

One DD has to be back at college for the start of soccer practice on August 1st. Her twin sister has to be back at her college for soccer on August 10th.

We go back the Wednesday after Labor Day. Then we have the Jewish holidays that same week. I think we go back on Wednesday for one day and have the rest of that week off. Seems a little silly to me.:confused3

DS8 goes to a private school. They start September 8th and his last day of school is on his birthday of June 22.

ETA: The school district we're in starts before Labor Day, which is a first. They have never done that before even when DH and I attended.

We've not even finished for the summer yet :teacher:

We have more holidays throughout the year:

Start back early September
Week vacation late October
2 weeks vacation over Christmas
Week vacation mid-February
2 weeks vacation mid-April
Week vacation late May
6 weeks vacation beginning late July

This means that students & teachers never do more than 8 consecutive weeks at school. :thumbsup2

Here in GA it seems that we start earlier every year. They were going to star Aug 2, but due to budget shortfalls they pushed it back to Aug 5.:headache: Big deal. I don't get it. August has some of the hottest weather of the year. It seems to me that if they wanted to save money, they'd wait on starting school until after Labor day when it's a little cooler and end school after Memorial day. Early June is not usually very hot.

Another Jerseyite here. DD has HS orientation on Sept 2, first day of classes for her and for DS is Sept 3. THe following week they are off on Monday for Labor day and then off on that Th and Fri for the Jewish Holidays.

The only 2 week vacation we get over here in the States is in December. Other than that, it's usually just a week.

We just received DS's schedule. The first day the school is closed is on October 11 for Columbus Day.

My dd starts school on August 6 here (Mississippi). I remember when I was a kid we didn't go back till after Labor Day and then we moved here when I was in Jr. High and school started back in early August which shocked me back then.

ETA: School lets out mid-May where we live though.

California just cut the public school year from 180 days to 175. They start August 23 and end June 10.
But they have a TON of time off in the school year. Every Thursday is a half day. A week off for Thanksgiving, a week off for Presidents Day.
When I was in school 40+ years ago it was the day after labor day until mid-June, we got 2 days for Thanksiving, 2 weeks for Christmas, and 1 week for Easter.
No wonder our kids aren't learning, they're never in school.

First day for the county my kids go to school (one in elem, one in spec. ed pre-k) is Aug 17. The counties near us all start either that week or the week before. Of course, we got out mid may (around the 21st)...so a decent summer break.

Wow, Ca dropped more days, I am assuming budget issues. My SIL teaches high school in Calif, I know summer school has become almost non existent and she does have some breaks that we don't have here in NV.

I hear you, NV mandates 180 days but doesn't limit the number of half days grrrrrr. When DD was in multitrack year round public school she had at least 4 half days a month - 2 for inservice and 2 so that teachers/classrooms could track on/track off. It was ridiculous.

She is now in a charter school - the first 2 days of school are 1/2's, the last day of school is a 1/2 and the one teacher in service day is the Friday before Christmas break. Thats it, Snow delays/cancels are rare, they expect us to sort out getting our kids to school. There is no busing etc. so that is not an issue.

We have standard breaks, 2 days at Thanksgiving, 2 weeks at Christmas, 1 week for Spring break. Labor Day in Sept., NV Day (the Friday closest to 10/31, we swap for Columbus Day), Veterans Day in November - MLK B-Day in January, the Presidents 3 day weekend in February and Memorial Day in May.

My DD's small Charter School sent home a ballot that offered us several different break options, including 3 weeks at Christmas, an additional week in the fall etc. All of these options meant we either started earlier and ended later or both. The overwhelming majority voted for the traditional calendar I noted above. I would have liked a 3 week Christmas break since DS is in college and we could have a week that was not part of the holiday rush, but I was out voted. Oh well....

We start school the same time as the local district but due to lack of what I call BS days, we actually end about 8-10 days earlier, give or take some for snow days.

I know it's different in lots of states, Here in NJ they go back after Labor Day.

That is not always the case. We live in Bergen County, NJ and my DD13 starts HS this year and her first day is Sept 7th(after labor day) but, DS9 is going into 4th grade and his first day is Sept. 2nd (before labor day). They both go to public school.

My high schooler starts back August 25th, my grade schoolers go back September 1st. The oldest is REALLY annoyed that the little ones get a whole extra week of summer. :confused3 C'est la vie. :confused3 They get out a day early next spring too; they are out June 8, she is out June 9.

All the rest of their breaks (Oct break, Thanksgiving, Xmas, Spring) line up exactly.
