I would like to book a room at a value resort for next month. Only the preferred rooms are available. I was wondering if there is a certain timeline that people usually cancel by? For example, is there date that they need to be paid in full by? I’m hoping a regular room will become available. :flower: Thank you!

Packages have to be canceled 30 days before arrival to avoid penalty. Room only reservations can be canceled (i believe) 5 days before arrival without penalty. But people can cancel right up to the day before arrival, they just pay a penalty for it.

I can’t book a preferred room then switch it if a standard room becomes available, correct?

You can, but if no standard room comes available you'd either have to cancel before the cutoff or pay for the preferred room. You can always change your reservation (or cancel an old reservation and book a new one) it just depends on what is available. If you book a package there's no guarantee the room you want to change to is included in the package offer so you may have to change your tickets/dining if you change your room type. Just a few things to be aware of - but changes are definitely possible.

Well, I'll be cancelling at the 30-day mark in about a month
I've had a trip planned for a year, but just this weekend, DH said he wants us to cancel/postpone for another year or two. He doesn't want to go on vacation while our senior dog is still alive. What a crusher.
Why haven't I cancelled the package yet? It's oh-so-difficult to do , that I'll wait until I absolutely have to without paying a penalty. That's 30 days out.
Watching my ticker go from the far right alllllllll the way back to left is a bummer, let me tell ya.

And what if your dog is still alive next year? You posted about this in the other forum - did you guys visit a vet to see if your dog has anything going on right now that is urgent?

If your dog is healthy now, you should go. I get being nervous, trust me.

Hi Farro, I'm afraid DH has made the decision. He refuses to have anyone watch the dog while we're gone. He just absolutely refuses to take a vacation with a senior dog now. And yes, if the dog is still alive next year at this time (and I hope he is!) then I'll be in the same boat. No biggie for DH though, he's not into Disney like I am, so he could care less when we go.

Maybe go without him?

Not if the wife still wants to go

He isn’t stopping her from going, though, from what I read. He’s not willing to let a senior member of his family who is ailing be alone. That’s different that putting her last.

We have a 14 year old dog that is suddenly ailing, and my husband doesn’t want to leave him. I think it’s ok, since he is likely to be gone in the next 6 months or less and he’s been a great companion for 14 years without fail. So next week, when I go to WDW, he’ll stay home. And when I go in January, he’ll stay home. It’s really the humane thing to do.

I appreciate everyone's sympathies and suggestions. I won't go without DH, though. Doggo is just fine and healthy, and that's what drives me crazy about this postponement. He would be fine and happy to have a family member stay, it's just DH is worried something will happen to him. I haven't postponed yet, hoping some extra tears on my part and a good old family "kick in his tush" might turn things around. I'm just stunned he dropped this on me with 8 weeks to go, though. That's a crapper.

Oh, that’s a shame then. I thought maybe the dog was about ready to cross the rainbow bridge, and then it’s understandable to not leave him.

I’d go without my hubby (and have), but if you won’t that’s something that you will have to deal with and I”m sorry about that. I’ve had a great time with my own kids many years ago, my GS a few years ago, and I’ll be by myself next month and with a friend in January. My husband is not a Disney fan, so he tends to stay home when I do my trips anyway. But it sucks for you, I know.

Thank you. I did tell him, if I'm having to postpone until 2021, or whenever our dog is gone, then I'm extending it from 9 days to 12.....a wife's tears don't come without payment. 😊

Smart woman!
But I know you wanted to go now, and that’s a tough pill to swallow.
My husband has agreed that once we lose these pets, we’ll go pet-free for a while to allow us to travel and do things we couldn’t while we have them. Hopefully, he’ll stick to that plan.

I see that the dog is fine, just elderly, but I would never leave a pet if the age was causing issues. DIsney will be there but my pet is family.

I read all of this and I wonder if there is something else going on. The dog is not sick and will like a family member staying with hm. I would never leave an ailing pet behind, and would never place any vacation over the wellbeing of my pets, but there is nothing that indicated your doggie is going to have an issue while you are away. This is just 8 weeks out and someting triggered this. If my husband did this under these circumstances i would not being using tears to make him change his mind, he would be explaining himself, and I would not let him use the dog.

Just anecdotally here, this is the kind of behavior I would engage in when my anxiety was out of control. I'd fixate on some terrible, but unlikely hypothetical situation. However, the anxiety was about something different. In this case, it would be about the travelling itself, but I would fixate on the dog.

I still do this, but now I am able to mostly manage my irrational fears.

Not saying this is your husband, but it's an all too familiar line of thinking for me.
