When did it become acceptable to run red lights?

In my state, if you go 20 or more miles above the speed limit the fine is several hundred dollars AND it stays on your driving record for several years (even though the ticket might drop off your insurance, the MVA will NEVER forget).

Of course not. But you may get run over if you don't. I'm not saying it is right, just saying..

I have been doing the speed limit of 70 before and come up on someone who was driving 50. It's very hard to tell how much slower someone is going than you are until you are driving right behind them.

I agree with your second statement and I believe that is a great scenario for an accident.

But the statement that you should go with the flow (even if everyone else is speeding) I cannot agree with.
But what I will do is if everyone is speeding, I will certainly get over as far to the right so that I may be easily passed.

Oh, while we are complaining, how about tailgating????

Get off of my butt! And I will actually go SLOWER if you are so close to me that I cannot see your bumper!! You will not make me speed!
Check the speed limit and how fast you are going before you start bearing down on people!!

Running a red light? wait till you find an intersection that is photo enforced.

VERY expensive.

and they are becoming much more popular as a revenue generating method for a city, plus they have been know to reduce accidents at some intersections.

I agree with you on this. Go with the flow, or get out of the flow!

And I am not saying that it is wrong for folks to drive slower than speeding traffic, especially if they are going the actual speed limit. I am saying that if everyone else is going faster, there could be problems. Whenever someone is doing something different than the others, an accident can occur.

People run red lights in Philly pretty often. They will actually stop, look and go, treating it more like a stop sign. I thought it was so biazzare when I first moved there but then I noticed the police did it also. I was actually almost hit by a police officer on several occasions, running both stop signs and red lights without lights or sirens on. As far as I have seen, many do not pull people over for running them either.

I really think that in Philly the problem is the police, or at least in my old section. They abuse their authority for laughs and never seem to enforce it when they should. I know someone in the academy now and fear the day he becomes a cop. Him being able to get as far as he has in his training does prove me that there is a serious issue in their screening process.

If I cannot safely stop because another car is following too closely behind me, then yes, I will proceed through the intersection. If I stopped every time a yellow or amber traffic-light is lit as I approach? Well, around here my car would probably be rear-ended daily. There are also some lights around here with dangerously short-timed yellows.

That's what happened to my mom once. She decided to stop for a light that had just turned yellow and got rear-ended. Now she will go through the yellow if she can. She's really paranoid of getting rear ended again for stopping when she's close.

It can be iffy here depending on where you are at, I do always try to choose to stop if possible for a yellow light but sometimes it's just not possible.

I know I've turned left on red before but that's because you can, I guess it's called "declare the intersection", here -- so basically you pull out pretty far & wait for the traffic -- since you are turning left, you have to wait for the traffic that goes through the yellow before you can finish your turn. If you don't go through the red & finish your turn -- the cars can't go across anyway - you would be blocking their way. I've read some states you can't do the pulling out part. NOW you should only do this if you are the front car & are out there when it's green, sometimes 1 or 2 and that would be it but it should be pretty obvious to the people waiting for the green light they are there since they are stopped.

I've mostly seen semi's blow through stoplights but at least they usually HONK big time when they know there is no way they are stopping from where they are at when the light turns yellow.

Driving home from my parent's tonight I saw an accident in a major intersection involving a cop. Turned on the news and apparently a person ran the red light, hit the cop and went over an embankment. Hopefully that will teach the driver not to run red lights.
