anyone "diet" on a cruise? How do we know what's in each dish? Can I ask the servers to let me know when something has lots of fat in it?
How do I cut the fat while cruising?

I know get me through the summer first then we'll think about Nov.

Just use your best judgement. If something is fried or has a cream sauce - stay away, for for broiled or grilled. Try the sugar free desserts, chicken, salmon or the veggie meals.

I too am trying to lose weight.

But.........when I am on my cruise I plan on trying everything that I want. I may eat only a bite or two, or scrape off some of the rich sauce, or forgo something (like the side starch..potatoe, rice), but I am not going to deprive myself. MODERATION, MODERATION, MODERATION!! I will try to work out a few times while on board, try to walk whenever I can and take the stairs if I'm not all dressed up.

Life is too short and it's one week. I know I sure didn't put all this excess weight on in one week and if I can 1 lb or 2 it won't matter. What matters is if we have a good time, the kids have fun and we get to enjoy each other for a week.

Enjoy and GL,
Marie

Hey there imgoingtodisney - I share your concerns. As you know from WISH I'm on the same journey.

But here is what my doctor "ordered" when I saw her in April. First we reviewed where I'm at as compared to where I started on several measurements - including weight and eating patterns.

She was pleased. Then she told be she'd see me again in October and I should ENJOY MY CRUISE. She was quite emphatic about it. Indeed she went on to say, don't obsess over what you're eating. "By the time you go (June 21) you'll have been living with this approach nearly 5 months. The patterns will be set. So you won't go crazy and when you get back home you'll get right back on track, I can tell from the results to date."

Of course, I had to ask her if I'd understood her properly - she was giving me permission to splurge a bit!?!?!?! Indeed she was - otherwise if one is constantly depriving themselves they burn out on the healthy eating approach. Does that mean I won't think about my choices? Of course not, as already mentioned - if a dessert sounds too good to pass up I'll share it or only eat part of it. Or take off a heavy sauce or select between two equally yummy options that isn't quite a rich. One thing I've discovered is that the choices are varied and yummy! I'm not worried.

Ok, back to my carrots and the rest of my very healthy lunch now!

I say eat what you want and enjoy. (Unless it's a serious health issue, of course) The few extra pounds can come off later. Have fun!

Exactly!!! Enjoy your trip. You deserve it.

Hey imgoingtodisney!
I just got off the 4 day Wonder and then went to WDW for 9 days. I, too, was worried about making the right choices, but the ppl on the WISH board gave me some great advice...namely, enjoy the cruise and don't worry about everything!! The other GREAT advice was "take the stairs" not the elevator. Which I did.

After a 4 day cruise and 9 days at the world, I weight 1/2 pound more than when I left! I did not feel deprived. The first night I ordered salmon off of the "lighter fare" menu and our server said "oh, you're on a diet?" but my response was "no, I like salmon." :) (maybe I should have broke down crying and said "why? do i look like i need it?) ;)

I tried any and all foods, but didn't necessarily FINISH them if I was no longer hungry.

I too have been trying to lose weight, up to 20 pounds :) :) . I find that having been watching what I eat for a few months now, I CAN'T eat too much fatty food. I makes me sick to my stomach.
With that being said- I plan to eat a little bit of everything.

If there isn't a medical reason for not eating fatty foods, a little bit won't do too much damage. The key is MODERATION.;)

I'm another person who had a great cruise and didn't worry about what I ate. I started WW in Mar 2002. We went to WDW for 7days and then the Western itin on the Magic in Aug 2002. I had learned at that point to make better food choices so I didn't worry about what I ate on vacation.

In WDW I usually shared a dinner and dessert with DH and on the cruise I just tried to listen to my body and stop eating when I was full. But, I had dessert every night and those yummy chocolate chip cookies in the afternoon. When we got home I had only gained 3lbs. Which I had no problem dropping once back on WW.

My weight loss was pretty slow but in Mar 2003 I had reached my goal and had lost 50lbs!! Vacations are a special time and sometimes its ok to splurge, just remember to get back on track when you're home. Have a great trip!!

ps-definately take the stairs, the elevators are too slow.

Hi imgoingtodisney.

taking the long way "home" but 1st Im stopping for my cheeseburger in paradise

Then you had better WALK the long way home and PASS on that "cheeseburger in paradise"...

How do we know what's in each dish?

No need to. The more you want it, the greater the reason not to take it...

Remember to take the stairs. THat has always equalled out my piggin' out!

Beware of some of the vegetarian meals...they were often cheesy or creamy. Being a vegetarian, I asked a TON of questions because I am very VERY picky about what I eat. They were very receptive and very nice. After the first night they caught on to my 20 questions and were always prepared with options for me for the remainder of my stay. My special diet was also noted on their list. There are MANY wonderful and tasty options. Don't be afraid to request something special!
