Are rooms assigned prior to your arrival or when you actually check in to the hotel?

Are rooms assigned prior to your arrival or when you actually check in to the hotel?

My understanding from reading here is that they are all assigned by a computer now before you arrive.

A few of the CM's have reported that a general location is assigned by the room assigner a few days in advance. When you check-in, the CM looks to see what room is immediately available in that area.

If that room is not desirable, you can ask for them to look for another room, or you can wait for the room you want to be available.

Does anyone read the room requests put on a reservation at all, now that they are assigned by a comp?

They are apparently sorted by the computer, so they are read.

Whether they are honored is another story; it appears as though they pick the first available room.

However, that is not to say that you can ask them to honor your requests and assign you another room that is available later.

That is what I always do, because I arrive on a very busy check-out day; I would rather wait for the area I requested.

Room requests are made note of in your reservation. Every effort will be made to accomodate your request, if possible. During peak times, it would be more likely that specific room requests could not be met than it would be at lesser busy times.

Your room assignment is usually made the night before you arrive, so that everything is in order by the time you check in. After all, they don't want you to spend a lot of time in the lobby, but would rather have you out enjoying yourself and spending money.

I just wanted to add not all rooms are assigned by a computer. Guests staying Club Level at the Deluxe Resorts get their rooms personally assigned by the Club Level Cast Members working in the lounges.

Requests are taken into account for room assignments but it doesn't mean you'll get it. You may still have to ask if you can get a different room when checking in, and the CM may be able to move things around. The earlier you check in, the better the chance you have at getting your request.

While rooms are pre-assigned, your room is not your room until you are in it. Up until that point, your room assignment can change. If you have a request for a 3rd floor room, there is only 1 left in inventory, and a person checking in before you demands a 3rd floor room, they can get it.

The earlier you show up the better the odds of getting any requests met.

Since check in time is technically 3pm, if I arrive at 4pm, is that considered "early" or are you thinking "early" as in prior to check in and even prior to check out for that particular day?

And if I want to ask about upgrading (paying for it) at check in, should I NOT do on line check in?

Thanks!

If you're planning to switch rooms, there's just no point to doing online check-in. The only advantage of online-check in is that they'll have your packet and key all printed up when you get there, and if all that's going to have to be re-done anyway, why bother?

As soon as you announce that you want to do an upgrade, they'll likely move you out of the online checkin line anyway. The assumption is that those in that line will just take their packet and leave, which is what makes the line move faster, so they'll need to pass you over to someone who can take care of your upgrade, and let the online-check in line keep moving.

Early as in early in the day. I go straight to the hotel when my flight gets in so I always arrive by 10am. My room isn't always ready, but they know I'm there and what I want, and I haven't had a problem getting it yet. 4pm isn't late really but if you're there at a busy time, it could be considered too late to get your requests. It really depends.
