Wheelchair Rental

I really do apologize for having offended some on this post. It really was not meant that way at all. I was just voicing my opinion and my family's opinion.

FYI: Last February, I went to Magic Kingdom. We were there by 10am and they were out of strollers and regular wheelchairs. I could hardly believe it since the park had only been open 1 hour.

As far as my bus story, the point was I should not have to ask someone else to give up their seat. No one should have to ask this man you give up his seat. My feet were hurting and my socks were covered in blood from blisters, but I still got up. That man was given the opportunity to do the right thing and he did not. It was not just me who was staring this man down. The people my sister and I gave our seats up for were quite livid too. Also, it's really hard not to notice people around you when the bus is packed.

Once again, I apologize.

Pssst...this is a hot topic issue! I know exactly what your saying and exactly what you mean even though I don't you from adam but apparently some are mind readers and know what you REALLY meant! ;)

If ya drop it and quickly do research on other threads similar to this you'll see your beating a dead horse.(No offense meant to any horses)

Apparently from some...offering a seat to someone is considered NON PC today and your not a nice person! ;)

WannaBeInWDW - I don't think you need to apologize - you were after all voicing your opinion - which is partially what this site is all about. Besides, it's pretty funny how the others are complaining about your opinion about judging others while here they are judging you.....Go Figure....

I am really glad I am not the type of a person who worries so much about everyone else on my trips to WDW.
Gosh it take up a lot of time and energy to worry about who is not giving up their seat, who is using the wheelchair and shouldn't be. Ugh. Are they affecting my good time? Nope!

I don't think she should apologize either nor do I think people are judging this person for their opinions. Myself and many others, were simply giving back our opinion which is "you never know". Some might be judging in their comments, but I think overall this is just one of those areas that does upset those of us that might need that wheelchair for what appears to be non-medical reasons. For the people saying "why worry about it", I try to live my life that way, but if you don't want to - its ok too. :) Plenty of room to share on this big old world in my opinion.

You're right - Plenty of room to share in this world. As Americans we are all entitled to our opinions - just no sarcasms please MeandtheGuys2.

No, you shouldn't have to ask someone to give up their seat. I totally agree with that. But you don't need to stand on a bus and stare some guy down either, when it's obvious he doesn't get what you're trying to communicate to him. My point was that, instead of just staring the guy down, ask him to move if it's important to you. If he can't, for some unseen medical reason, you'll know that and won't go through the next few weeks thinking of him as the rude guy on the bus. And if he can stand, he likely will. Some people simply weren't taught the same way you were. They may have let their own fatigue get the better of their manners and need a little nudge. Or they just may not realize that all those people glowering at them are really trying to get them to stand up and offer their seat to a guy with a kid who didn't seem to them to need it.

As for the wheelchairs, they were out at that moment, but there are honestly plenty of others that can be brought in if demand requires. It just takes 15 min or so to get them from their backstage locations.

A EVC for my next trip in July for myself. I usually walk everywhere, but, this last trip took a LOT out of me. :confused3 I got tired quicker, and had to go back to the hotel and rest. I had constant feet and leg cramps too. I saw A LOT of older people who looked like they NEEDED a EVC or Wheelchair, but I guess didn't know, or couldn't afford it. :confused3 By the way, HOW much tp rent a EVC?? Anyone know?

Pretty sure they are $30 a day, but its first come first served. Many people rent them from outside companies and have them delivered to your hotel (but I have also read some stories about how hard it is to get to the parks that way). It is my understanding that the price is about the same, but at least this way you have one.

lllovell, where did you read about how difficult it is to get the ECV's to the parks? I am renting an ECV from an outside source and they guarantee me it's no problem bringing it around. I just want to make sure - I want to cover all my angles. Thanks!

:rotfl: I am mearly pointing out the misconceptions about WC and ECVs, and stating that is is in poor taste to come back whining about people and suggesting rule changes because you are irritated. What part of what I said do you have an issue with or is incorrect. Guess I am missing something. :confused3

Maybe it is the fact that you call it whining. I wasn't whining as much as i was swapping stories. My opinion and your opinion may be different, but we are allowed to post our gripes and praises about Disney World on this board whether we agree with each other or not.

Ok then... Well, I'll be in the WDW for 9 days from June 3- 12th. I am a bit over weight but that won't slow me down- I'm a pooh size princess: . I have high blood pressure/migraine headaches but that won't slow me down. I have hashimoto's hypothyrodism but that won't slow me down. I'm hitting 41 during the trip but that won't slow me down - I'm getting better with age :flower: . I've had a broken ankle 3 times in the last 2 years - lots of walking and it swells up impressively!-but that won't slow me down. I have severe exercise enduced asthma but that won't slow me down. I take insulin for diabetes but that won't slow me down.

BUT here's the thing that you won't know or notice besides my weight, breathing hard, general gloomy appearence if I have a migraine headache from HBP and a sore, swollen ankle- and feel sick from low blood sugar levels......

I'll be 11 weeks pregnant  - ( read that as not showing much yet ) with all of these health issues which make this pregnancy a high risk one. My OB and the other 5 doctors that are helping me to bring this baby into this world as healthy as we can, have agreed that I can take this vacation if I swear that I will use a wheelchair for all the walking to minimize the risks associated with my pre-existing health issues to this pregnancy.

You will see me having a great time with my children and husband. You will see me get in and out of the chair as I am not to sit longer than 2 hours at a time. You may see my DH pushing one of my kids in it while I take a break from sitting. You won't see me wait in the chair, in line- I am able to stand just not exert myself in the heat for long periods of time. So if you see a pooh size Mommy with slightly puffy tummy- please don't stare or glare- feel free to ask if I really need that wheelchair that I'm sitting in and getting out of to join the lines. I'll be glad to say hi to you.

We also have a special needs child so we will sometimes use a different entrance than you will. However, often you see the wheelchairs going into the shorter lines but what you don't see is that they often have to wait as long and sometimes longer than the regular lines because many of the rides only have 1 wheelchair boat or car for instance and by law can only accomodate so many disabled people for evacuation purposes in an emergency. We waited for what seemed like forever a few years ago because we needed the special safari car in AK. Others were passing us by in the regular line but didn't know that we had been sitting at the gate entrance for longer than the stand-by line sign stated.

So, no, not all people in a chair have visable health issues. Some people do try to "cheat" but I'm sure that they find out very quickly that it is much easier to just dump the chair, walk and enjoy yourself without keeping up with the wheelchair, dodging running kids and rude people who see you but step and push in front of you anyway, sweating lots on your back and bum because it's so very hot in Fla., and finding that others take the chair from the parking area in front of shows and rides if they feel that they need it more than you and so on.... if you are blessed to be healthy and able to enjoy your day without the aid of a wheelchair then count yourself lucky. - and please try not to judge someone who you don't know. :grouphug:

I have read stories here about it but it might just depend on your resort. (if you are staying at the All-Stars, each bus goes to all 3 so by the time it might reach you, it could already be full, etc). Those kinds of things. Not every bus is equiped of course, but I do think there are a lot of them that are, so I am not sure that is the problem so much as simply getting around during "busy" morning and evening hours. Search for it here (when the search is working). The DIS is where I have seen these kinds of posts.

You are right. How about complaining (instead of whining) and suggesting rule changes and adding to the craziness for the families that already have enough issues to deal with without being harrassed by some CM about whether they are sick enough to get a WC. My only point to begin with was that it is a waste of time, energy and happiness to perseverate about some idiot boys goofing off in a wheel chair.

Daydreamer64, I wish you all the best on your trip! Congratulations on the baby and God Bless you as you rear your special needs child. Take care of yourself and enjoy! :cloud9: You have all my best from a 41 year old hypothyroid momma!

Michelle

lllovell -

:cool1: Oh - great - then this won't apply to me - We rented a minivan! Thank you, though!! :cool1:

Altho I don't know about the buses, I can comment on WC's and EVC's.
A couple of years ago my niece was here and she is wheelchair bound. We still had to wait in lines, about the only perk is because of how hard it is to transfer her, if she wants to ride again, we can ride the ride several times. On occasion I have rented an EVC as I have an torn ACL and am unable to walk long distances. There is no positive in renting one, I actually hate renting them, people don't see you and run into you all the time. I always try to find a place to park it and walk on rides anyway.

Can't you just park it where they park the strollers? :confused3 At least you try to park it! Walking through Fantasyland, people were parking their strollers for Peter Pan/IASW right in front of the entrance of IASW instead of the designated parking area at the old SkyWay station. Caused quite a traffic jam! It was quite hilarious! CMs moved them obviously. :earseek:

I always try to find an out of the way place, altho CM's have moved them on me. Stroller parking usually works. One time I was parking and a CM said, oh no, you can come in with the EVC, I said no it's time to walk a bit again. I feel bad when I need to use one, (I always hope I'm not getting one before someone else who needs one worse) but I am glad they are there just in case.

Thanks Michelle/meandtheguys2,

We found out that we were blessed  with this unexpected pregnancy two days after we had finalized plans for and paid for our vacation. Since this will be our last vacation for a long time without having a stroller, diapers and so on, to deal with along with our older son's health issues, we still really wanted to take it with our boys -so the docs OK'd me to go with the chair.

I guess I just want people to think about how lucky they are to be able to walk and not how or why people in chairs are cheating or trying to shorten their wait in lines.
