This week I decided to try to add some whole wheat flour to our pizza. I subsituted half of the white flour, with stone ground whole wheat. About 20 minutes after eating it, my stomach bloated and I had stomach cramps. I ended up in the bathroom at least once.
Yesterday, I made a dish with penne pasta and subsituted whole wheat pasta. Again, about 20 minutes after eating it my stomach blew up, was hard and hurt really bad. I ended up in the bathroom 2 times.
Could I be having a problem with the whole wheat? I wouldn't think it could be the fiber because I usually get quite a bit of fiber through 1-2 servings of Kashi a day. That has 10 grams of fiber in it (1g soluble, 9g insoluble). Whole wheat is insoluble and there are 5 grams of fiber per serving in the pasta. Both nights the dish had brocoli in it, but I don't normally have problems with brocolli. Plus the week prior my pizza had brocoli on it.
I was too scared to bring the dish to work today. While I thought both versions of the whole wheat product were decent tasting..........my family was not happy about the switch. I really am thinking that maybe I should take it back out.........enjoy the food the way we like it, and up our fiber in other ways. Which we have been doing anyway. I have been trying to eat 2 servings of the Kashi a day, which is 20 grams of fiber. 25%-35% is recommended.
Anyone else have this experience with wheat? Oh, and I do get IBS (irritable Bowel Syndrome) occasionaly (mostly when I eat oily foods). Since I started back on WW's, I have hardly had a problem, and actually have had more problems with constipation. So maybe it's just my IBS.
Thanks for your help.
