What's up with cell phones on the rides?

I wish Disney would put a filter in the rides like some churches have, to stop cell phones from working. 3 of the 5 people in front of us during the Great Movie Ride last week were on cell phones. One person was on the entire ride, and was loud. He said a few times (shouted) "speak up..it's noisy here!". He was still on the phone as we exited. Why the heck did he even go on the ride?
Are people really that important, that they have to have their phones going 24/7?

As an owner of my own small business I can be on the phone 24/7. I am greatful my phone doesn't work in a lot of the attractions.

Those people are just rude and there is nothing else that can be said. I keep my phone on vibrate and return calls AFTER any ride as needed. I have been on line on the phone which I know bothers some but I can't believe people have the nerve to ruin the ride for others.

Sorry for their rudeness.

As a business owner I fell having my phone on 24/7 is pretty important to me......BUT....my phone is on vibrate and I would never answer it while in an attraction, nothing can be so important that I can't wait 5 minutes. I won't even answer it if I am in a checkout, but I will call back immediately after exiting the checkout.

I don't get it either. We have ours with us incase of an emergency. or if we separate in the park which is very rare, so we can use the walkie talkie part of our phones to find the other half of our party but that is it.

ETA: I agree with the other posters, I wouldn't talk on my cell phone on a ride. I would wait till after i got off the ride.

While on It's a Small World a couple weeks ago, there was a teenager with his mom and younger brother on the phone behind us talking on his phone the entire time.

Since I am not a fan of that ride and only felt that my DH must endure it once in his life, we didn't mind much ;) But I was surprised that not only can people get a signal within rides like that but that they take time to talk the entire attraction! Why didn't he just wait outside and have his conversation while mom and brother were on the ride?

I agree, it's going to become a bigger problem with time... seems like there are few places to get away from cell phones these days! It's amazing the situations that have been interrupted by ringing and conversations.

I don't support the signal blockers (reason being is I've gotten very important phone calls and never knew it cuz I didn't have a signal). But I do agree it's rude to talk on the phone. I wouldn't answer my phone if I was on a ride... but I'd have it on vibrate so I know it rings, then like the other guy said, return the call after the ride.

I don't understand the point of a VACATION when people are constantly doing what they do every day anyways.. isn't a vacation supposed to be a get-away?

I don't agree either. I had no service at my hotel room when I was in CBR and it was the worst part of my trip. All I wanted was to talk to my DGF who couldn't be there with me. Also, when my friend decided to walk around the park and lose me, it was an easy way to track her...with a signal blocker I don't know what I would do. I just think people should be more respectful. Instead of taking privlidges away from everyone else... You always get someone who's going to be rude: Cell phone or not.

Some don't have a choice. :sad1: My DH is only able to take two weeks of his vacation in a row if he is available for calls or e-mails. So the company gave him a blackberry to use for the trip (oh joy :sad2: ). He would never take a call in the middle of a ride, show or restaurant, but I can bet we'll be seeing him waiting in line for a ride, typing away or talking to someone from work. He'll also be "relaxing" at the pool, working on his laptop.

Frankly, I don't care who judges. I'm just glad to have him for those two weeks, whether he's checking e-mail or talking on his cell phone.

I agree with one of the previous posters. I can't imagine that people who can't leave their cell phones can really have much of a vacation. We are from Canada and our cell phones didn't work in the States.(not that we would have used them anyway) It was the best mental break to be totally disconnected from our lives back home. We just left everything behind for one week and enjoyed our family. I feel sorry for those of you who cannot disconnect completely from the life you are taking a vacation from.

Or build your own cell phone silencer using parts from Radio Shack. PM me for the circuit, that's a few years old, I haven't tried it yet, so I can't tell whether it still works.

I don't have a cell phone but these last few trips my family insisted that I borrow my brother's cell phone for use in emergencies. Except for making outgoing calls, he, and I, kept it in a small plastic bag to protect the finish, it was turned off, said package stuffed in a pants pocket.

Please don't feel sorry for me. If I didn't have a cell phone I could not go to Disney as often as I do. As a small business owner, my clients always call me cell not my office phone. I do not tell clients when I am away. (Yes, I even have to sometimes run to Kinkos on vacation). If I was not reachable, I would have to limit my vacations. I would rather have 4 weeks of vacation with limited interruptions, than 1 week of uninterrupted.

Again, I would not talk on a ride but have certainly found a quiet corner to do so. Also, I have asked ride operators if I could wait it the load area for a minute or 2 to finish my call. It is possible to use phones as needed and still be respectful.

PS - if it wasn't for my cell, my business could not be successful and I couldn't afford my DIS trips

I have a son with severe asthma, so when he's not with us, the cell phone is on. Of course, if it's a real emergency, anyone with him knows to call 911 before they call us. My cell phone doesn't work on most attractions. Once I had to use it on the Norway ride. The ride experienced technical difficulties and we were stuck for a half an hour. I called the rest of our party who were waiting for us at another place in World Showcase, to let them know we were delayed.

Unfortunately this happens everywhere - we had some b---head answer his loud ringing cell in the movies yesterday and he sat there and had a LOUD conversation - didn't even try to keep quiet. I have a cell and I turn it off or put it on vibrate when in a resturant, movie or on an attraction - I wait to make the return call when I am finished and I can go outside as to not interupt anyone elses time.

I think it's rude. My phone rang while riding El Rio Del Tiempo. I had forgotten to put in on vibrate, but luckily my family was the only one on our boat. I ignored it and let voicemail get it. I returned the call after I got off the ride (I had to return it because it was a friend of mine who was supposed to be meeting me somewhere! :) )

This is not in reference to those who use their cell phones while in the park - but the clients of those who use their cell phones in the parks.

I don't understand what could be so important that it can't wait a week. The only people that I can think of that would be THAT needed at a moment's notice are doctors and/or emergency personnel. I don't say that to be insulting, to flame, or to offend - I really don't understand.

This world functioned just fine before the advent of cell-phones, Blackberrys, PDAs, and laptop computers. What would these people have done before the development of the cell phone?

I DO understand that you can really anger a client, and lose them by not getting back to them immediately, or simply by not taking a phone call. I just don't understand why the clients can't wait a bit!

Nope . . . they just think they are! :rotfl2:

There is absolutely no excuse to talk during a ride or event. None. :sad2:

Place the phone on vibrate (not rocket science) and then answer/talk on the phone after the ride/event. Or, if possible, step away and talk privately. Again, not rocket science. :teeth:

I got on an airplane once with some moron who talked so loud on his mobile telephone during push back that I wanted to smack him on the head with my tray table! Thank goodness the flight attendant told him to hang it up. You could tell he thought he was so important. The sad thing is, those of us around him didn't think he was important, just an idiot fantasizing to be such. :rolleyes1

My husband and I both carry our cell phones while at the park, but we put them on vibrate and we use the text message feature to track eachother down if we get separated. Of course, I am hard of hearing so in the park talking on the cell phone is just not going to happen way to much background noise.
:teeth:

I understand people wanting to have their phone in case someone needs to contact them but I don't understand why they would answer it on a ride or in a movie. I can't see how it's healthy for someone (I'm talking about calls of a non-emergency nature) to have to be so connected that they can't wait a few minutes to answer the phone.

I don't understand people talking in a movie theatre on the phone like they are at home.

I hope this period of "entitlement" fades away and people realize they aren't the only ones in the world.

Not that I'm comparing his job to that of a doctor, but my husband works for a utility company. Gas flow is run by computers, as is all the rest of the business. I don't think I need to tell anyone here how buggy computer software can be... you probably don't want to know! Anyway, he's on call 24/7. I was like you and never realized how important his job is and why he needed to be in touch like he is. How would you feel if there were a gas leak in your neighborhood and -- too bad, so sad, the people who can fix it are in WDW having a good old time  I'm just being a little facetious, but you get the point. It's not that my DH is indispensible, but he works as part of a team -- a vital part of that team -- and if something goes buggy, he needs to be on top of it.

Before cell phones & computers, I don't know how the gas was regulated so it doesn't really apply. It is what it is now and that's how it goes.
