What's up with cell phones on the rides?

:cool1:

Think of the nightmare if they allow people to use their cell phones during all of the flight on an airplane. The last time I heard, it is being considered.

Not that I'm comparing his job to that of a doctor, but my husband works for a utility company. Gas flow is run by computers, as is all the rest of the business. I don't think I need to tell anyone here how buggy computer software can be... you probably don't want to know! Anyway, he's on call 24/7. I was like you and never realized how important his job is and why he needed to be in touch like he is. How would you feel if there were a gas leak in your neighborhood and -- too bad, so sad, the people who can fix it are in WDW having a good old time  I'm just being a little facetious, but you get the point. It's not that my DH is indispensible, but he works as part of a team -- a vital part of that team -- and if something goes buggy, he needs to be on top of it.

Before cell phones & computers, I don't know how the gas was regulated so it doesn't really apply. It is what it is now and that's how it goes.

If someone has a job of extreme importance, I would not expect them to go a week without responding to calls.. However, I would expect them to wait 5 minutes for a ride to be over - or discreetly go to some far corner in the back of the theater - to answer the call.. :flower:

Exactly. I too have my cell phone and bring my laptop on vacation (because I take so many vacations LOL), so I am connceted to my business. However, I'm on vibrate and I'll happily go in a corner to return a call (although I can't think of a case where I didn't leave the building/restaurant). My cell phone shows me who I missed while on vibrate..or if there is a blocker, like some churches and now public buildings, it just takes a minute to do a call back, since I have an answering service. We were at Disney with several of us this last trip, and the cell phone was great to stay connected (on vibrate). I really feel, if you can't go a few minutes without being available, then whatever is off such importance, you prob should be attending to it. I can't imagine being an on call nurse or whatever (fill in the occupation) and being in Disney. If you are that important (or need to be reached that quickly), then please, stay off the rides and just enjoy the outside things with your family. If there was a gas leak in our neighborhood, I hope I'm going to reach an on call person who was local..as most on call people are. In our area, most all on call people are not on vacation..but on call. Seldom are people on call every single week, most get a vacation...otherwise there might be some nervous breakdowns with no off time. That's an extreme case, IMO. I too paid a price to be on vacation, and listening to how important someone is all through a ride, or shouting over the British Invasion, or even for 60 minutes of a wait in line, (oh, and let's not forget the really important people in the restaurant..and gee, could you talk a little louder, I don't think they heard you over in Epcot from MK) I think is just plan rude. Even an asthma attack (of which I'm very familiar) phone call will do you no good until you are off the ride..since you have to go through the ride anyway..and then it takes a mere second to do a call back. How on earth did we make it at Disney in the old days, pre cell phones? As I stated, 3 of the 5 in the seat in front of us were on the phone. One appeared to be a business call (he was on the phone all through the line while waiting and the ride and still on it when he got off), the others seemed to be much less important..although each of those others got more than one call.
Ridicuolous IMO. I did write to Disney, and I hope they do something about it.

My dh tried bringing his cell phone, turned on, with him just once. We got to the park and there he was, 'checking' his office voicemail!!! We had been gone for about 36 hrs!!!! That didn't happen again. Yes, he brings it with him, but it is on vibrate. I have mine also, but I don't even turn it on. I use it to make outgoing calls from our room to the kids back home.

Sorry if this insults anyone but we got along just fine without call taking ability 24/7!!! Yes, there are emergencies. But, when you are at the grocery store and you overhear (and that's not very hard to do!!!) someone telling someone else what they did last night...well, enough is enough. Same thing at the movies. If you feel you can't be out of touch, for whatever reason, then keep the phone on vibrate and return the call privately. None of us really want to know your life or employment story!! I mean, really, aren't any of you ever away from your 'work' phone for a few hours? Don't you go to lunch or to meetings? Let voicemail pick up and then return the call, if needed, later. Nothing wrong with checking voicemail a few times a day.

I need to be on call all the time. I am an English teacher and I never know when someone is going to need to know where to put a comma.

I need you apparently. I would have put a comma after the word teacher. How wrong would that have been LOL? Can I have your cell phone number? I especially need to know when a word is posessive. For instance, is it:
Doris's cell phone or
Doris' cell phone, and is it
The Smith's, the Smiths or what?... why is that so hard?

My father works for National Fuel Gas - so I know how being on call goes. But you'd think that companies would have backups so that people COULD take their vacations. Being on call while out of town is just silly, as far as I'm concerned!

(And once again - I don't direct that at you or husband, but rather at the company who can't find somebody ELSE to be on call while on vacation!!!)

On my last trip, a girl was on her cell phone in the stretch room in Haunted Mansion! She knelt down so that she could hear better. She was behind me, it didn't sound like an emergency call, just chit chat.

We were at a movie once where a woman was making and taking phone calls loudly. I complained to the manager who did nothing. I sent an email to the corporate website when we got home and a few days later I had a handwritten apology from the manager along with a movie pass for each member of my family. The passes were nice but I just wanted to make sure that people don't let this sort of disruption continue.

And I love that people use cell phones (DH works for a cell company :teeth: ); I just want them to be used appropriately. We keep ours on vibrate at DW and text message each other if we split up. Anybody else we call between attractions.

What kind of a person would I be if I were out of reach for even a few minutes. And those gerunds and infinitives! I apologize if this offends, but for heaven's sake, people must be able to reach me. :rotfl:

:)

Thank you so much for that chuckle. I just got some horrid news and I've been in tears ever since. I got chicken pox just days before our WDW trip.

Please shoot me.

I totally agree. Company downsizing is awful for the employees and puts them in such stressful positions where they have to work such long hours.

Yes, we all know the students are just hammering away all day and night and would just die if they didn't get in touch with an English teacher. They must be able to find out if they should use a semicolon or colon! Imagine the teasing the other students would give them if they had their commas misplaced!!! The horror! Next time I hear someone babbling on the phone on a ride or movie theatre, I will think to myself, "that person must be one of those insanely dedicated English teachers!". I will then follow them asking punctuation and conjunction questions! :)

Oh No! I know this is off topic but, what are you going to do? I hope you are going to be alright. I got chicken pox when I was 19 and it was horrible! I'm sending some pixie dust your way! :wizard:

One time before we were married my DH called his parents from the California Screamin' ride at California Adventure. They had never been and we thought it would be fun if he gave them a play-by-play of the ride as he was on it. They got to hear every turn and scream and he told them stuff like "now we're turning," and "now we're going upside down." But the ride was so loud even I couldn't hear him in the seat beside him, so I don't think he was disturbing anyone! I agree that when others can hear you on a ride it's very rude! Plus just calling someone from a ride (or that's on a ride) to chit chat is very rude! It's totally different if it's an emergency, but for most of these people the calls aren't emergency calls at all.

I also don't understand why you would want to have your cell on in the parks unless you were expecting an important call or you needed to be "on call" for some reason. Wouldn't it ruin the "magic?" :confused3 DH and I take our cells with us just in case we get separated so we can call each other, but otherwise we leave them turned off the whole time. It's like when I see kids playing Game Boys in the parks . . . hello, aren't the parks entertainment enough?! :confused3 :confused3 :confused3

Thanks for the PD.

We're still going, but it'll be less of a thrilling/exciting vacation and more of a relaxing, subdued one. I'm going to feel lousy, but at least I won't be contagious. Florida heat will not be pleasant!

Marseeya, I hope you are feeling better soon and that you enjoy your trip anyway! Sometimes being forced to take things slowly makes it even more fun. Takes the pressure off, kind of. :flower:

Well good luck and have a great time!! :) :wizard:

In February I took a short trip with my DS and it turned out that I needed to be in touch with my office because a critical issue had cropped up. I kept in contact with my staff and answered questions via cell phone, but I never took a call on a ride and if I did need to talk to the office I would find a quiet spot where I wouldn't bother anyone else. I can't see being able to focus on business issues while riding Tower of Terror anyways!

People who feel the need to talk while others are trying to enjoy something, be it a play, movie, theme park attraction or whatever, are just rude. They need to get over themselves and learn some manners.

I can't believe I forgot to mention the girl on the phone in the bathroom (actually 2, at different times, but the second was prob in there because it was easier to hear). She was in a stall, and I actually heard her say, yeah, I'm still on the pot, I have a stomach ache. She left the stall, just as I did, it did it's flush, and out the door whe went, still on the phone. Guess it was too hard to wash her hands with the phone in them LOL.

It almost seems that until people are actually (and consistently) ejected from theaters, restaurants, attractions, indoor school functions, and all other such venues for talking on their phones, they just won't learn. And, using Disney as the example, I do think the other guests have a right to enjoy the "magic" that they've come to expect. So much of the enjoyment of the attractions is based on the atmosphere Disney works so hard to create that I do feel that inconsiderate guests should be "dealt with" by the CMs. I know, though, that Disney doesn't like to ruffle feathers...will that policy change if enough guests complain about the inconsiderate cell phone users? On the other hand, I don't think many of us, me included, like to complain to the CMs.
