What's the difference between a 2 BDR and 2 BDR-lockoff at BLT?

Hi all. Thinking about traveling with 7. Me, DH, Kids 16, 14, and 12, as well as my mom and (adult) niece and my great niece who will be 2.5. What would be better for us? a 2 bedroom or a 2 bedroom lockout? I don't know what the difference is. Also, are these typically hard to come by at BLT? It's my home resort so I would book 11 months out. Thanks!

A 2 bedroom is always a 2 bedroom. A lockoff is a 1 bedroom that happens to have a connecting door to a studio that you also have.

So a lockoff:
Has two doors to the outside hallway.
Has a full kitchen but also a kitchenette in the studio part.
Has one real bed and a sofa that converts in the second bedroom.

A dedicated 2 bedroom
only has one door
Only has the kitchen.
Has two real beds in the the second bedroom.

With 8 people you might want the extra real bed. Unless one part of your group wants to be able to close the connecting door and come and go without going through the living room

Thanks! And either way, we get 3 bathrooms, right?

The layouts do differ from resort to resort. BLT has 3 bathrooms. VGF has 2 (the one on the studio side is split by a door between a room with the shower, and the room with the toilet; is it does provide a tad more flexibility)

Resorts differ, just be aware.

Google the layouts when in doubt.

If using the 11 month window you will not have an issue getting one except possibly standard view for which any room size can sometimes disappaear, particularly during the last quarter of the year, very quickly once the reservation window opens for online booking at 8 a.m. at 11 months out, or even before 11 months out (because your start date is taken by those booking with start dates just before yours).

And of course, that's just what I want. I don't think Ill have enough points for anything else. We are planning on going April 2018. I know it's a long way off but I need to start planning!

April shouldn't be bad. I was worried about getting a standard 2bd over July 4th, so I booked as soon as I could at 11 months. But, at seven months, I was able to rebook it with points from my other contracts. If a standard 2bd is available over July 4th, April should be easy.

When I book, at 11 months, do I get to choose either the lock-off or dedicated? Just wondering what everyone's preference is. I do kind of think the dedicated would be better, but I'm still unsure.

You can see the floor plans here.

As to April, there is some risk of having issues for getting a BLT standard view 2BR at 11 months out and for 2018 the issue might arise the first week of April which is Easter week and middle of April for time around the Star Wars half marathon weekend, and thus be prepared to move quickly at 8 a.m. at 11 months out. (Race weekends tend to be high DVC demand times with the Wine & Dine half marathon weekend in Nov being the highest DVC demand weekend of the year, followed by the Jan marathon weekend, and then the Princess half marathon weekend in Feb which, though it is nowhere near as bad as either of the Nov or Jan weekends, is the highest DVC demand time throughout all of mid-Jan to late Sep, and the new Stars Wars race weekend in mid-April is quickly approaching it in demand.) Also what we do not know yet is what new special events Disney may be planning for Hollywood Studios annually in April after the park redo is done which could affect DVC demand for that time period.

We just returned from 7 nights in a dedicated 2 bedroom with 3 of our guests, and DH and I spent 1 night in a studio on arrival day. The studio is nice, but seemed VERY small to us, and the pull out couch looked like only a double bed. For the size of your group, I suspect people would rather have a more comfortable bed and a little more room than 2 separate doors to the hallway and a tiny kitchenette in the studio part. Not having the kitchenette allows for a larger bathroom area (sink outside the toilet/tub room) and a larger sleeping area.
And the 3 bathrooms are wonderful!!!
You'll have to see which is available when you book. Sometimes there's LESS availability for the 2 BR lock off because people have already booked the studio part and there's no studios left to combine with the 1 BR to make the 2 BR. There is a choice of 2 Bedroom villa -- Standard / Lake / or Theme Park View (which is the dedicated 2 BR, but that word isn't used) or 2 Bedroom lock off villa -- Standard / Lake / or Theme Park View. You have probably gone to the website to see what the options look like so you're familiar with the site when the magic day arrives for you to book.
Good luck, and hope you have a wonderful trip!

I have plenty of time to prepare so if I miss it, it's my own fault! When booking online, I choose "2 bedroom villa," correct? As opposed to 2 bedroom lock-off villa?"

We definitely won't need 2 kitchens, I barely use one when I am on vacation! Thanks!

As to the link to room configurations above, the site is showing the lock-off for both the dedicated and the lock-off (notice the studio front door in both). The dedicated has two queens in the second bedroom and its closet is where the front door is in the studio.

On the online reservation pages, the lock-off always says it is a lock-off and the dedicated just says it is a two bedroom.

We were just at BLT I'm March we booked a 1bd lake view and got a dedicated 2bd because they messed up our reservation. It was great, huge!! Could have slept 9 people, 3 full baths and 2 balconies. It was classified as a lake view but had a park view. If you don't mind a walk to the monorail ask for room 1402, what a great room with great views of lake and MK. Watched Wishes and water parade every night.
2 queen beds, 3 full baths plus pull out sofa and chair bed And lots of storage also only complaint was the TV was to small for the living room need a bigger tv and the washer/ dryer was really loud.
