What's the deal with the funnel cakes?

I think I am in a minority. We had never seen or heard of funnel cake before (had seen it mentioned in message boards but didn't know what it was) going to WDW (don't have it in Australia) and I had no idea what it was, so when I saw it at WDW we went and ordered one with sugar on top. We then sat down and ate it and I have to say it was not nice at all, it was just fried batter :rotfl: don't quite know what we were expecting :rotfl: . Maybe we had the wrong topping or something, but we were not impressed at all.

So are they "that good", in my opinion NO. What's the deal with the funnel cakes? I have absolutely no idea :lmao: I was wondering that myself as I was munching away on mine.

I may get kicked out of the US for this, but I am an American who doesn't like funnel cakes. I born and raised in Texas, close to a very large flea market that has multiple booths always selling funnel cakes. Even as a kid I didn't like those messy things.:rotfl:

I never got to try a beaver tail, but am curious. What is the difference between beaver tail batter and funnel cake batter?

Being from NJ, in relatively close proximity to Boardwalk's, I don't see the big deal either. :confused3 Maybe we're just used to them?

I think you hit the nail on the head! I think any regional food becomes not as special, or a big deal, to those who have it readily at their disposal. Funnel cakes are not huge here in MN. The only time of year I get to eat them is at our state fair in August. So, when I go to WDW I am thrilled to have funnel cakes all around me for the entire length of my vacation. I love to have a powdered sugar funnel cake with cold milk for breakfast at the MK, and it is a "must do" for me. I don't think that the WDW funnel cakes are any more special than the ones I have had anywhere else; to me, it really is the fact that they are special because I don't get to have them very often.

Would love to try one --just wondering what type of toppings can you get for the funnel cakes at MK & Epcot?

I think the funnel cake discussion for us PA/NJ folk is almost like discussing..

Is a cheesesteak in disney still a cheesesteak?

I personally don't buy funnel cakes in disney because they sell them everywhere in philly...I do love the smell though.

I don't see the draw myself. I don't like funnel cakes but have been known to nibble on DH's just to reaffirm that I still don't like them. They are greasy and messy. I hate the powdered sugar explosion that seems to happen whenever I touch them. DH, on the other hand, absolutely adores them. He can not walk by a funnel cake stand without getting one. I just don't get it. He's the same way about fresh donuts also. He can inhale a dozen of those each morning and never get tired of them. :confused3

I think you can get them for a snack credit at Sleepy Hollow. It's a good use of a snack credit if that's the case.

BINGO!!! Is there really a better Funnel Cake in the world that tastes better than standing on the Boardwalk at the Jersey Shore with powder sugar all over you.:sunny:

True maybe that's why I have never had the desire to have a funnel cake in WDW or anywhere except the "shore" when I was growing up~

I live in Arizona and I feel the same way about the Churros..LOL. In fact, I returned the Churro I got last summer at the stand in Frontierland for my money back. I thought it was horrible and yet people rave about them here.... The ones I can get at Costco here are even much better.

:lmao: :rotfl: Good point.

I was borin in Nj but now live in PA and its sometimes hard to remember that not everybody lives on the East coast and knows what a funnel cake is. ;)

i love a good funnel cake, but honestly was slightly disappointed with the funnel cakes at the world showcase. besides, there's so much other fun stuff to try in the world showcase that i don't bother with them there anymore.

Dh and my brother are both obesessed with the funnel cakes at WDW they love the BWI ones but will settle for the EPCOT one too:rotfl:
