What's for X-Mas Eve Dinner?

Reservations to Maggiano's. I used to do a rib roast but the kids don't eat much beef so it's silly to cook just for me.

We do oyster stew for Christmas Eve... then depending on how many are together, we'll add other things - mostly appetizer-type things.

We normally do appetizers for Christmas Eve dinner - I make some in advance and others I can buy. then we have cookies and fudge for dessert.

When the in-laws are here, they want an actual meal so then I'll heat up some soup, have some crusty french bread and call it done.

I like to keep it simple.

We do not do anything for Christmas Eve. It is a normal workday, so I just go home and have a normal dinner and then we go to church.

I usually make a ham and a meatloaf (DH's family tradition) with potato salad, mac and cheese and various chips, veggies and dips.

This year we are only going to be home for 2 days before Christmas (returning from WDW!) so I think I am doing a meat and cheese tray with rolls. a Chik fil a nugget tray ( a request from DS13 and DS15) with sides and cookies. We will have leftovers on Christmas Day.

Normally we go out. We had a favorite local seafood restaurant that we loved to go to (until it closed two years ago) -- DH plays in a brass quintet and normally finishes their service by 6:30. Last year we went to Weber Grill.

This year, though, he's got a gig at 5, 8 and 10....Just enough time not to be able to go out together as a family.

Thinking appetizers.

DD29 has requested chili and cornbread because mommy's is better than her husband's. At least it is easy!!

We always do snacks and finger foods on Christmas Eve and a big dinner on Christmas day.

This year we r doing pancetta wrapped pork loin with roasted potatoes and Brussel sprouts along with some apps, desserts, and spiced sangria. Getting hungry just thinking about it!

We go out to a super fancy place... for my parents its just not special if you aren't hemorrhaging money. :rolleyes2

Christmas Eve is a family party with the inlaws. Usually the hosts provide a main (this year is roast beef and buns) and everyone else brings sides and desserts potluck. I'm making a big tray of mac and cheese to bring.
Christmas day is at my parents and usually a big turkey dinner but because they also host Boxing Day for that entire side of the family and do Prime Rib and a big dinner for about 25 people we are trying to talk them into something easy for Christmas day. My brother suggested apple stuffing stuffed pork chops that are from the butcher. That would be easier than a big turkey dinner.

we actually have all our guest bring some kind of finger snacks, and we provide chick fil a nugget platter and dipping sauces i know its kind of odd, but its cheaper than a big elaborate meal, ad honestly we seem to enjoy it more. stress free christmas dinner :) but still tasty

The girls voted on a smorgasborgd. I love hearing all the ideas and traditions. I usually have at least 40 come. We are going to start with chili, nachos, cheese n crackers, crudite, mini quiches and strawberry snowmen. Then for dinner I will make a ham, mashed potatoes, macaroni n cheese, scalloped potatoes, green bean casserole, lasagne, meatballs and rice florentine. The guests will bring dessert

Anybody have any side dishes that they love?

Steaks on the grill, baked potatoes and maybe some other kind of veggie. Christmas Day we are eating on property and checking out the parks.

I never thought about the Chick fil a nugget tray. Yum!! Have you had their chocolate chip cookie tray? Delicious!!

Christmas Eve it's just my husband, my daughter and I so we just do a bunch of appetizers and snacks. This way we can eat what we want, when we want, while we watch Christmas movies.

My heritage is Slovak so we have a traditional Slovak Christmas Eve meal. This consists of no mea that dayt. We start with the breaking of a wafer and bean soup (no ham). Then we have fish, pierogies, mashed potatoes, and vegetables.

I love this tradition and it's our big family celebration. My family doesn't do a Christmas Day meal.
