I have never posted before here or anywhere else, so I hope I do it right. I have been following this thread since almost the beginning and today I got the courage to sign up. I don't know why I didn't before. Tonight we are having boneless porkchops, baked beans, cornbread, and whatever veg I find in the freezer.

My grandmother had a bad appendix that was leaking. I hope that is not what Alexis has.

Who is moving the smilies again.pirate:

I hope it's not too.

Must be that darn tag fairy messing with us.

Welcome You did just fine. We don't bite we are a well feed bunch who just like to cook and chat and chat some more.;)

Thanks y'all!

Apparently appendicitis is pretty unusual in 5 yo's, but the area she is having pain makes it suspect. The pain starts right under her belly button & out to her right side. I'm not sure why, but appendicitis didn't seem to be the dr.'s first concern.

Welcome Rogue!

Hey Lauren - You & Tom had better come up for air soon!

Awww, we do. ;) We actually went out this AM and did some fun stuff before starting to paint. :)

My dinner plans changed. I did not feel like cutting everything up so I am making the Swiss Chicken, corn, salad, rice and cranberry sauce.

Janice, I think that sauce is in the old thread...I will look...

Sheryl, Prayers and hugs for our Little Iron chef!

ETA: Janice, Its on pg 790 of the original thread...I will repost later for you...

I'm really beat, we were in the ER with Alexis again last night. She had continued to run an on & off low fever, intermittent complaints of stomach pain. Chris talked to dr. on Friday, said they thought it was virus. Last night her fever shot up all of a sudden to 102.5 & she was crying with pain.

We took her in, after 2 hours in the waiting room, her fever went back down to 100 without any medicines. Then she started getting really upset about being in the RE as she called it, was starting to get a bit hysterical about the idea of them putting in a catheter on her again. By then it's past midnght her fever is down & we still had a long wait before she'd see a dr. Chris decided to take her home & bring her to the dr. this morning. Whe has an appt at 11:00, I'll be going with them.

Please say some prayers that they will figure out what is going on with our girl!

Gotta run & check in later & let y'all know how it goes with the dr.

Sheryl

Nancy, You have that right! :sad1:

Well, Alexis saw a diff. pediatrician today, who didn't dismiss it has a virus. We're glad she ran a battery of test even though putting her through it was awful. When they took blood, she was crying "Nana, help me!" I felt soo bad!

She had x-rays, blood & urine taken. They found high white blood cell count again . The Dr. just called Chris with the rest of the results, her blood sed. rate was also high, which also indicates infection somewhere. Even though the preliminary urine test looked ok, she is running cultures on her urine, looking (& hoping) for a bladder infection. We won't have the results on that until tom. afternoon.

If that doesn't come back positive for infection, she'll have to have ultrasounds/cat scans, looking for either appendicitis or something worse. We are really praying that it's just a bladder infection.

We're also more than P.O.'d that when she was in the ER 2 weeks ago & put the poor child through being catheterized that they didn't send it for cultures!

Poor kid. That's a lot to go through at such a young age. I will say that my Crohns pain is where she is having pain; unfortunately, pain in that area can be SO many things... which often makes it hard to dx. I hope they find something quickly so she can get some relief.

Welcome to the Dis! :dance3:

Change of dinner plans for us, too. I even bought sour cream at Walgreens, of all places, so I could make the Chicken Sausalito and then left work without it :headache:

Subway is doing $5 footlongs around here so we're going to negotiate on one and split it between us. My throat is not bothering me today so I can eat! :woohoo:

Oh - I know some of y'all do Omaha Steaks. They sent out an email offer today, y'all may have already gotten it, but it's in store only and seemed like a good deal to me but the nearest store to me is an hour away so I can't use it. I'm happy to email it to anyone if you're near a store. It's for $19.99 specials, through the 20th I think. Just let me know.

Oh this poor little girl :sad2:. I would be so mad at the Dr, please tell our little Chef we all want her better soon and are all thinking of her

Aimee, Glad you are feeling better. I will have to check to see if we have an Omaha near us. Thanks for the heads up! Good luck compromising on a sandwich! ;) I don't think I could ever do that with Tom!

Janice, Here is the marinade:

Wing or Flank Steak Marinade

1 cup dark brown sugar
1 cup soy sauce
1 cup dry white wine
1 tsp garlic powder
1 tsp ground ginger
3 tbs veg oil

Mix all together and marinate meat for at least 8 hours...overnight is better. Cook meat as you normally would. I like the wings started in the oven and finished on the grill.

Thanks :thumbsup2 I have to use a whole cup of wine? This will cut into my stash for sure. :rotfl2:

I just wanted to say that the chicken was a keeper! I left in in the Crockpot too long, in this case 6 hours is 6 hours, not 8 ;), so the white meat was a little dry. Next time I'll follow the directions.

I always thought that appendicitis came on suddenly, could it be that Alexis has been having it for weeks?:confused3

Didn't realize it had been that long, just saw the symptoms and they sounded familiar.

Welcome.

Well made it home after 3 stores, 5 bags of groceries and one stop and the library to drop off and pick up books. Made the talapia, just sprinkled it with this dried herb stuff my mother had, which turned in to blackened herbs cause I had the heat too high. Wasn't bad though just needed a little more salt. I had it with corn on the cob and a spinach thingy I came up with. This is for one person so you can just double or triple depending on how many people it will serve.

Greek Spinach w/ tomatoes

1 t olive oil
2 cloves garlic, I put mine through the press
1 C grape tomatoes, cut in half
1 C frozen spinach, thawed, squeeze out any water
1/4 fat free Feta cheese

Saute the garlic in the olive oil for 1 min. Add the tomatoes and spinach and saute for a few minutes, until the tomatoes start to break down and any water in the spinach is gone. Add the cheese and serve.

And then last night I decided to grill some hamburgers, and ran out of propane halfway through cooking. :headache:

I have never understood why they don't put gas gauges on propane tanks. I hope your week gets better.

We are having a yard sale Saturday so I have to get the old desk ready to sell, plus anything else I want to sell.

Good luck with the yard sale! They are a lot of work.

I have never posted before here or anywhere else, so I hope I do it right.

Welcome!

Wing or Flank Steak Marinade

Lauren, I use this marinade of yours all the time for chicken wings. The kids and I love it. :thumbsup2

Janice, I do use the full cup of wine, but it doesn't have to be high quality stuff. I often use whatever I have that is open and has been sitting in the refrigerator too long to drink. This actually does happen sometimes.

Sheryl -- Poor Alexis! I hope the doctor finds out what the problem is with the culture tomorrow, and the little chef doesn't have to have any more tests.

Wendie -- Sounds like a fun night! What food was Ross bringing? (I assume he was doing his project on Egypt.)

I had pan bagnat (well, a variation on it) for dinner tonight. Beck posted the recipe on the other thread. It is a sandwich with greens, tomatoes, olives, roasted red peppers, fresh mozzarella, balsamic vinegar...and probably some other things that weren't on mine. I added pesto to mine instead of the usual fresh basil Beck puts on hers. I tried to take a picture, but I was hungry and they were completely blurry. I need to get a tripod.

Hey all!

I have been popping in and out today...please forgive me if I forget anyone...

Janice, using the 1 cup of wine will give you an excuse to go buy more wine!!! ;)

Laura, I am so glad you guys like that marinade. :) It is really good on flank steak too. I never made flank before I was given this recipe and we loved that cut of meat.

I forgot to tell you guys...don't know if you recall a while back we were discussing milk deliveries and then organic foods. Well, I have been doing some research on organic foods to see if it was something that I could slowly work into...and then the other day I say a milk delivery truck down the block...I tried goggling them for a webite and they do not have one......

Well, today, a man comes to the door. Tom answers it...goes outside to chat with the man (Riley kept barking up a storm). Tom walks back in and says in a voice as if he knew I would be mad...and told me starting next week we are getting milk and eggs delivered. I was so excited! And he thought I'd be mad. The products are organic too!

OK, I am babbling...see what happens when I don't log on too much during the day!

That's great Lauren.

I looked into the beef situation around here but really couldn't find one that seemed "user friendly". I have wondered though if one of the Amish markets here isn't selling organic meats and just don't advertise as such. Unfortunately I don't know when I wll be able to get down there again, they are only open a couple days during the week and Saturday and I am busy the next couple Saturday's.

Evening all-- Whew what a night, it was looong, 20 kids worth of "stuff" (3rd-5th)... but it was a blast. Ross had started to decompose as the night went on....the muslin was slowly unwinding, lol!
I think we (parents of 5th graders) enjoyed it a lot, as we know this is our last year doing this project, next year we will be parents of Jr high schoolers!! UGH!!
All of the kids picked great country's this year, and had great displays!! The costumes were all creative as well. I must say that other then one or two things, the food this year was outstanding!! We had foods from Tanzania, Peru, Ireland, Brazil, China, Egypt, ;) etc etc. The girl who had France did crossiants and her little brother was dressed up like a French pastry chef, big hat and all passing them out on Ratatouille napkins...he was adorable!
Ross (ahem me) made Ghryba's....it is an Egyptian Christmas cookie...tasted like a mild Lorna Doone.....it had 1 cup of melted butter in it, lol....Paula Deen would love it;) It went really great with the green mint tea from Morocco, and the coffee from Columbia!!

Sheryl--I have our little Iron Chef in my heart and prayers tonight, please let us know what you find out. The poor baby.

Rogue26--Welcome, you did great!!..post recipes and meal plans and jump on in the chatting as well, you can't be shy around these parts, we move fast!!

Lauren--Glad you had a good day today, and took the time to do something other then the house this morning!! Stepping back and taking a deep breath is important!!

Ok I am all over the place in the conversation and I am sure I missed some of you....I mean well and you ALL are in my thoughts..........I will toast to you as I go get myself a glass of wine to unwind with......Kris is laying a (uniclick) wood floor for a customer at his Tattoo Studio tonight, he will be a bit late as he didn't get over there until after the presentation.
