What would you have done?

Yesterday I made a trip to Super Wal-Mart to pick up various items, including the new Harry Potter DVD. It was extremely busy there for 11am on a Tuesday (we live in the middle of nowhere). Anyway, people were in such a rush at the checkout, that I just put everthing up on the counter, let the cashier do her thing, and then swiped my card and signed my name. Nothing strange about that, right?

Well, later, DH was putting the purchases into our budget, and couldn't find the DVD on the receipt! HMMM.... It was in a bag, and the alarms didn't go off as I left, so I didn't think anything of it.

So, this morning I bring the DVD and my receipt in to customer service. The cashier looks at me like I'm nuts and says, "So, do you want to pay for this?" I told her that I wouldn't have been able to watch that movie without feeling guilty, so of course I wanted to pay for it.

What would you have done? Wished DH hadn't itemized the receipt ?

I think you did a very honest thing. However, I would not have made the extra trip to the store for their mistake, if I was then I would have taken it back in and paid for it. Now on the other hand, if they charged me too much you better believe I'd of gone back .

I probably wouldn't have bothered taking it back since it was obviously their mistake. I have seen similar threads though on this board and their are a lot of people who don't feel that way, but I just chalk it up to the cost of doing business.

At Lowe's a few months ago, I was looking at drawer handles for some baby furniture we were refinishing. We purchased 8 handles. When we got to the next store and I reached in my purse, there was a handle (but not the one we ended up getting). It was only $2 or $3, but I still felt really guilty as it was obviously my fault. I still wouldn't have taken it back though, however we were driving right by the Lowe's on our way to our next stop, so I just took it back in and put it back in the bin. I didn't bother telling customer service. However, if it wasn't my fault, I wouldn't have bothered.

This has actually happened to me at Walmart before. I phoned the store, and asked to speak to a manager. I told her that I would come back and pay for the item. She took down the items information, thanked me for my honesty and told me not to bother, as it was their mistake....bonus!

I applaud you for being so honest. I wouldn't have gone back- of course my SuperWalmart is like 20 minutes away. I think that even if it was close I would chalk it up to their mistake and just not bother.

Me too!! Of course, I worked there for 5 miserable years and they treat their employees like crap and pay them next to nothing, and you paying for that DVD isn't going to change anything, except make the ones at the top just a bit richer. SO, I would have watched my FREE movie.

ETA- if it were any store OTHER than Wal-Mart, I would have gone back and paid!!

You remember the Friends episode where Phoebe's bank kept giving her more money accidentally no matter how many times she tried to fix it. She said if she'd bought shoes everywhere she walked she would have heard, "Not mine, not mine, not mine." When we saw that, DH told me that that was me.

So, yeah, I'd have gone back and paid for it, too!

I would not have taken it back. I am another who would simply think "bonus"! and move on. On the other hand, there have been times I have discovered I have been ripped off in some way like being overcharged and I don't bother to go back when that happens either. I figure it probably evens out in the end. Or maybe I'm just lazy. LOL.

Thats me in most cases. It really depends on where the store is. (or if it's the one I work at!) If the store is close enough I would probably go back, but if it's a bit of a drive to get there I wouldn't bother.

I think it depends upon what you would have done in the reverse situation - if you had been charged for the DVD, but it not ended up the bag. If you would have gone back and asked the DVD you paid for, then you have to go back and pay for the one you got free.

Long ago I made a deal with myself. For "small" amounts, once I leave the register, what's done is done. If I get overcharged, I just accept it. So if I am undercharged, I can keep the booty guilt free.

I applaud your honestly. This has never happened to me, but if it did, I'd do what you did. The "price of doing business" gets passed on to everyone and I'd look at this as my small contribution to stemming the steady increase in that price.

I would have taken it back and paid the next time I went in. I would not make a special trip. In funny thing happen to me at Target. I had bought a bunch of little toy give aways for my DD2 B-day party from them. I did not use them all and returned the extra's with my receipts in hand. On of the packages did not ring in the first time and went unnoticed. When she could not find it on the reciept she said that I never paid for it in the first place so she could not return it, and then she gave it back to me to keep. OOOOKKKKK. My daughter has eight rainbow slinky's now.

If the cashier bagged it and did not ring it up I dont think I would go back.

Now the other day in Target when I got outside I realized I had a 2 little bottle of coke in the basket.. I went back inside and paid for it.

Like someone else posted maybe I'm just lazy - but if it's in the $20 or less range I figure it probably all evens out in the end. I've been overcharged by that much and don't bother doing anything about it.

Of course if I notice before I have to make a special trip (still in the mall) I'll take care of it.

The department store we registered at sent two complete orders of our crystal. You can't believe how much trouble I had getting them to take one set back. They kept giving me a credit for it even though I told them over and over we never paid for it! Finally got it worked out.

Incidentally SIL got two complete sets of china from the same place and only paid for one. (she just kept the extra set)

I've often wondered how much that store lost on dumb mistakes!
