What would you have done? Saving pool chairs dilemma.......

Well I was going to post about towels, but now since this is turning into a smoking thread I guess I will post about both.

About the towels....If you are in the pool or getting food/ beverage and have your towel on a chair this is the only way I think it is acceptable. To the original poster - you did the right thing.

About smoking outside...I know this will turn everyone against me, but I am a smoker and I was very upset once Disney started the designated smoking rule. Now before everyone jumps down my back I will also say that I see why they did, because most people are not considerate.

Before the smoking area rule was in place I never lit up in line, in crowds, or especially around children! I would always find some quite area with no people around to smoke a cigarette.

Respect should go both ways for smokers and non-smokers. That is just my 2 cents

nrose101, I agree with you that many smokers are thoughtful. My Dad smoked for years and NEVER inside, even if it was in a designated area, out of consideration for the rest of our family!

Disney is at fault here. Smokers and nonsmokers will never agree, so the best thing is to designate separate areas. If one side of a pool area is "smoking allowed" I will avoid that area entirely! Smokers will also usually avoid smoking in places that are off-limits. But currently Disney doesn't designate anything around the pools and it leads to hard feelings on both sides. I can't enjoy my time at the pool if there are people smoking around me, and that makes me angry. How hard is it to limit ashtrays to one area and post signs directing smokers to that area? Again, Disney is really behind the times here and it leads to unnecessary conflict between the 2 groups

Personally I have never noticed this problem at any of the Disney pools, but you are right if enough people are bothered by it then they should have a smoking and non-smoking pool area.

In a perfect world, no one would smoke and I don't spend my free time hunting down smokers. There are polite smokers out there, but unfortunately, only the rude ones are the ones you remember. I can even admit when I'm wrong - like the time my mom and I were walking through MGM-Studios (this was before my baby came along), it had been a while since I had been to WDW and didn't realize that they now had designated smoking areas. I sat down on a bench out of the way to rest my blistered foot or something to that effect when several people sitting on the bench near me or standing near me lit up. I was like what the heck is going on here (I was saying this silently to myself) and was about to get all annoyed and huffy when I saw the little sign that said designated smoking area. Well I quickly got up and left and appreciated the fact that all the smokers there were considerate enough to seek out the area and smoke there. Of course, now when I'm in the parks and see people strolling along smoking just anywhere it really irks me. Hopefully those people just don't know yet about the designated areas, like I didn't know and some nice CM will come along and point the way. But back to the original topic, yes, yes yes! I wish they would designate some n/s areas by their pools.

Pool Towels:

I truly believe they should have a card system. You show your card, you get a towel. They should also have signs about saving chairs that say it is not allowed.

I actually like the idea about having a pool person who could tend to this kind of thing. Then the lifeguards would not have to worry about it.

Smoking:
They can't have a designated smoking area-or so I was told. The law says that smoke is legal outside. I was told that they can't make all the smokers go to one section.

However, this does not prevent them from having non-smoking areas!!!

All they have to do is make large non-smoking areas! Maybe some day they will do that.

Docandfamily,

Yep, I agree with you. One of my brothers died of heart disease because he smoked so much. His twin found him and he still smokes-even after having problems with pericoditis(sorry on the spelling). My other brother died of colon cancer which puts us all at risk and yet my brother still smokes. IT MAKES NO SENSE!

Yes smoking is a nasty habit (this being said from a smoker) but I have tried quitting in the past and it is really hard when my DW smokes (I went 6 months and that was it) I think once she quits I will too. Just right now it really isn't in the cards.

As far as the law goes, how where the able to make the park non-smoking if there is a law saying smoking outside is legal. It seems to me they should just apply the rules to the pool the same way they do in the parks.

nrose101,

You're right I never thought about that. I was told this by a manager of a hotel in Florida and he said it applied to all hotels in Florida.

Who knows. He probably just told me something to get me off his back.

I just get so emotional about this because I really miss my brother and he would probably be alive today if he hadn't smoked.

He was young-41, thin, active and never knew he had arteriosclerotic cardiovascular disease.

I don't know what Disney will do about this but I'm sure they will have to do something about all of the issues being addressed here.

nrose,
I agree with you. I am anti-smoking, partly because of my profession and partly because of what it did to my dad.
However, this is America and smoking is legal. And the vast majority of people who smoke and visit Disney do smoke in the designated areas; these people I have no gripe with. But, rudeness is taking over this country, and that is why I get so angry.
Floridafam, my condolences. I have seen this way too many times.
So, to all you "chair savers" and inconsiderate smokers, why don't you go vacation somewhere else--say Iraq--and leave THE HAPPIEST PLACE ON EARTH to those of us who, granted, are old-fashioned, and are silly enough to respect others and follow the rules.

We were staying at Poly once and a party of 4 came over and "possessed" our table while we were in the pool. Our coverups, sandals, towels, newspapers, touring guides, drinks and bags were either on table or on our seats while gone and they just moved it all to the ground and "took over". I saw them doing this and got out of pool immediately, went over to them and asked what they were doing. Their reply, "you are in the pool and we want to visit with each other and have a few drinks" I don't even want to get into a blow by blow of the altercation that insued but swears were spoken ( them not me.) So I do sympathize with the OP but understand the old peoples belief that it was "their" table. Remember, and I don't doubt the OP's recollection of the events, but we are only hearing one side of the story. The couples at the Poly actually had the gall to call me "bold and selfish to think I had rights to the table while I was swimming." I don't know why anyone would think you are only "entitled" to a seat if you are physically in it. People go swimming while at the pool, I can tell after reading these posts that that is a new concept to some of you but sometimes people go to the pool to swim and sometimes they swim for a while. People shouldn't think they are only entitled to the use of the lounge chair if they are lying in it at all time.

As for the dirty diaper, I am APPALLED you left a dirty diaper on an eating surface....How disgusting!!!! The next person to come along has NO idea you decided to get back at another family and leave your kids germ filled diaper as a present. I don't understand how you people go on and on about someone beside you smoking but think leaving such filth behind is acceptable. What you did in leaving that diaper put a heck of a lot more people at risk than their smoking did you. I feel sorry for the next family that came along and was unwittingly victimized by your need to get back at those old people.....

I don't think the old people, if they acted as you stated, were right but you leaving the dirty diaper behind is much worse in my opinion. And so what it didn't have feces in it, kids urinate in pools all the time and I don't think that diaper was "sterile" when you left it behind. That is just simply NASTY!!! In my opinion, you both acted dreadfully.

My two cents

I'll take a wet pee filled diaper over some old hag smoking any day!

Seen last week on the streets of East Lansing....

We're at a red light and here comes this lady in a scooter and she's got an oxygen hook up with a mask and SHE"S SMOKING.

She was just down the street from the store and had a just purchased carton of cigarettes in the basket on the front of her scooter.

ncligs,

If you have a smilie for this, I'd love to see it. :D

I think the OP was correct. I am not sure what I would have done when they sat down and started smoking. But dousing the fire with water is one that comes to mind.

...

I think the act of pulling up chairs uninvited and smoking in front of you constituted assault. I would have called hotel management to have them removed, and if that did not work, the police. That is a bunch of crap.

Personally I would have just walked away. I am on vacation and why should I get myself angry, stressed out or frustrated by some other person.

on a slightley diffrent note we had much the same problem with line jumpers 4 kidds going under ropes to get past people when they got to me i asked them to stay behind me as it was not fair on the rest of the people in the line.Whereapon there party leader who was in frount of us said that they were catching up with them as they were eating food outside ride.I pointed out that if they wanted to all stay together (17 of them ) to join the line at the same time as the line jumpers came in 10 min later. As this fella had took his teath out and looked like he was spoiling for a fight i just keept stum but it spoilet my day

There is no law that says smoking outside is legal. There are laws that say smoking in prohibited in certain areas/situations. Any private entity could ban smoking or segragate smokers if they wanted. It's simply not illegal to smoke outside, at least not yet. LOL.
