Well I was going to post about towels, but now since this is turning into a smoking thread I guess I will post about both.
About the towels....If you are in the pool or getting food/ beverage and have your towel on a chair this is the only way I think it is acceptable. To the original poster - you did the right thing.
About smoking outside...I know this will turn everyone against me, but I am a smoker and I was very upset once Disney started the designated smoking rule. Now before everyone jumps down my back I will also say that I see why they did, because most people are not considerate.
Before the smoking area rule was in place I never lit up in line, in crowds, or especially around children! I would always find some quite area with no people around to smoke a cigarette.
Respect should go both ways for smokers and non-smokers. That is just my 2 cents
