What Was Tom Hanks Mumbling As He Came Onto The Stage???

Scenes from the wings, Pt. 8: Show control to Major Tom
Tom Hanks, about to present the award for best director, found himself surrounded by uniformed network pages — each of them dressed in blue blazers, red ties and clutching clipboards. Hanks looked at them and made a sour face, as if displeased: “We need some more people with clipboards!” he shouted. He was cut off as Brokeback Mountain screenwriters Larry McMurtry and Diana Ossana emerged from the stage. Before he took to the stage himself, Hanks hugged them both. -- A.B.

Okay--so far if those two tidbits are accurate..I still am not seeing anything warranting his mouthburst.

If those things were enough..Mr. Tom needs to work on Mr. Angry eyes and knock his ego down a notch.

Perhaps he was in a hurry for the afterparty...

Or home to e-bay so he could auction of the goody bag.

That's the thing though...Tom Hanks never seemed to have a huge ego...always seemed pretty down to earth, if you KWIM.

I initially thought maybe he didn't like the choice of the "Forrest Gump" music for his entrance, but that's a great song and one of his best movies, so why would that be? What Jon Stewart said right before his entrance was a little silly, but nothing to seem so pissed about.

Maybe it was just sort of the confusion of the last minute "when do I go out?" thing.

ummm, he was continuing to play along with the joke from earlier.........

She was either having a problem seeing the teleprompter or it wasn't functioning correctly, because she seemed to "stumble" a bit with her presentation.

It wasn't awful, but you could tell there was some difficulty.

I also felt sorry for Lauren Bacall. It got to be painful to watch. :( I felt sorry for her, whatever the problem was.

I missed it...I fell asleep and my tape ran out. so what exactly did jon stewart say? and what exactly was tom hanks' response?

He was either:

1) Continuing the joke about the viola being bashed over the head

2) Mad Jon Stewart made fun of the Brokeback Mountain screenwriter who wore jeans

I'm thinking it was number one, but the joke was flat.

I noticed it too and it looked like (to me anyway) that whatever he was saying was directed at John Stewart. Hanks didn't look too happy did he? What's his problem?

I was pretty sure he was just "acting" angry about getting hit with the viola. Jon Stewart didn't say anything about wearing jeans that should have offended anyone.

I really like Tom Hanks. That really surprised me cause I would of never expected that kind of behavior from him. Real shame. :sad2:

That's the way we all took it to mean too.

does anybody remember just what jon said about the jeans?

He was totally just going along with the previous scene with him in it.
I'm surprised so many people didn't/don't get it.
