What Was Tom Hanks Mumbling As He Came Onto The Stage???

He was totally just going along with the previous scene with him in it.
I'm surprised so many people didn't/don't get it.

I know, I thought it was an obvious joke too. :confused3

I didn't get it because I missed both the original joke and Tom Hanks' reaction. I was in the next room trying to do something else at that time.

Lauren Bacall probably had problems with her teleprompter. She still seems to do well at other functions.

Did anyone see Keira Knightly stumble and almost fall flat on her face? That could have been so embarassing!

I just asked in another thread what happened with lauren. She was trying to read and she was stumbling through words. Finally at the end she read the last sentence with dignity and grace. She should have said the telepromter isn't working instead of trying to mumble through it. How far away is the telepromoter anyhow?

It wasn't Kiara Kinghtly who almost fell, it was Jennifer Garner...that was the brightest spot of the whole show to me. :rotfl:

Oops! That shows how closely I was paying attention.

Could someone please explain the viola joke. I totally missed it and I really don't want to go back and watch 3+ hours of the show again.

I suppose he could have just been extending the joke...but it didn't really come off as funny and then when he presented the award he didn't seem all too cheerful.

Tom Hanks participated in a "demonstration" of what would happen if an acceptance speech went on too long. He was on stage acting like he was giving a speech, and the band was around him, and they got louder, but he kept going, so got hit over the head with a violin and then shot with a poison dart from a clarinet. He finally fell to the stage....

pretty funny stuff :)

Tom Hanks had a bit they did with him...he was doing a fake speech, it ran long they were pulling him off the stage, hitting him with instruments (viola)....etc...a few awards later, Hank comes out for real to give an award, and is still acting mad over his shortened speech.
It was a joke.

And for the record, no one there looked all too cheerful to me.

Tom Hanks was "accepting" an award with a full orchestra surrounding him. As he is accepting, the viola hits him, the trumpet shoots out a dart tranquelizer into his neck, etc. It was a joke about keeping speeches short and sweet :teeth: . I didn't see the later incident so I'm not sure if it was a continuation of the joke or not.

All of the nominees received an "instructional" DVD which featured Tom Hanks giving acceptance speech tips/how not to make the show go long. That is why it was HIM in that skit with the orchestra.

Lauren Bacall is 81 years old. You can have stylish hair, face lifts, & professional makeup, but when you're 81, you're kind of old, even if you LOOK like you're 60!

That was a great comeback. I would ahve bben embarrassed for her if she had fallen. She came out looking so happy and bouncy...(and good too)...a fall would have been the worst. Even my DH commented on how she seemed more "real" than the other actresses last night.

I didn't see the previous Tom Hanks thing...him getting hit with
the viola etc. That was probably when I took the dog for a walk. Now it makes sense!!!!!! He was continuing the skit.

Well, I feel better about it now, because I have always thought Tom Hanks was not ego-driven like many Hollywood folks, so what I saw was out of character for him.

I didn't see the skit either. Has it been on any talk shows or anywhere else about the curse word? Just curious...seems like that would be a pretty big blooper.. :confused3

I didn't see the skit, so I was in the dark, but, when I saw Tom Hanks come out, the way he did, the only thing that I could think was that it had something to do with being rushed!!!

So, yes, it may have been 'continuing the skit', however, at this point, he was making a presentation of a REAL award!!! An important award. I think it went to far, way past a joke, and into very bad taste.

PS: unless some new light is shed on the whole thing, I am going to assume that Tom Hanks was following script... I simply cannot imagine him acting that way for real!!! Unfortunatley, he IS an academy award caliper actor, and may have done his job far to well!

I thought for sure she was going to take a header backwords, I would have felt SO bad for her. :guilty: It looks like she hadn't been wearing heels in awhile. ;) Did anyone see Sandra Bullock? One of the "winners" stepped on the back of her dress! :sad2:
