What type of Spaghetti sauce do you use, jarred or homemade?

I ask this question because of a post I saw on my Facebook feed. Someone asked what type of sauce do you use and the responses were funny.

A lot of ppl use jarred sauce, me included (Prego meat sauce) but quite a few ppl got really indignant and turned their nose up to jarred sauce and basically said jarred sauce is no good. But then a few of them posted the recipe for their own Spaghetti sauce and all it was was Tomato Sauce with different seasonings in it. Some ppl added meat and some didn't.

Isn't that what jarred sauce is? Tomato sauce with different seasonings in it?

SO I am curious, do you all use jarred sauce or do you make your own... And if you make your own what do you put in it that makes it better or taste better than what I can get in a jar?

I try to make my own and freeze it, I just like it better than most jarred sauces.

What I do that makes it special is I substitute half of the canned tomatoes I use with ones with a chipotle in them. Gives it a little kick and smokey flavor. :)

I use jarred. Prego with meat as a matter of fact. I sometimes think about making my own. I am sure Prego is full of stuff not so good for you and homemade would be better for me. Or at least I am sure someone is going to come along and tell me that anyway. But anyway, for $1.88 a jar, I don't know that I can make it cheaper.

I use the store brand from Harris Teeter, H T Traders. I usually buy the Puttanasca style or the Tomato Basil style.

Both.

I've made my own, but typically I use jarred for the convenience. I like Barilla's Olive Oil and Garlic. There's a Classico one I liked pretty much, too, but can't remember which - haven't bought it in a long time.

I usually add stuff to it - sometimes green olives, usually garlic, sometimes tomato, sometimes zucchini, sometimes mushrooms, etc.

Depending on the time I have, I use both.

My family prefers the homemade but will also eat the other.

Do what your family likes is what I say.

I do not like jarred sauces. They are much too sweet for me. Many have corn syrup! Yuck!

I use jarred sauce: Rinaldi - we like the Tomato, Garlic and Onion one and I usually brown some ground beef or turkey to add meat to the sauce and I also add additional dried herbs - nothing special just garlic powder, onion powder maybe a shake of "italian seasoning." I think many people object to jarred sauce because of added sugar and/or the sodium content.

On sale, I usually get Rinaldi for $1 or $1.25 a jar - for that price I'm not taking time to make my own sauce.

usually I make my sauce with chicken in it and meatsauce..or meatballs and sausages..but when I dont want to do this...I use Ragu...BUT last week I picked up Classico that had italian sausage and onions and green peppers and it was delicious...may have to change to that one for back up

I try to make my own most of the time, but sometimes I do use jarred. When I use Jar sauce, I either use Raos or Classico brand.

Jarred really is NOT the same as making your own, even if (like I do) you use canned crushed tomatoes and tomato paste because if you look at the ingredients of jar sauce, CORN SYRUP is one of the main ingredients of it. I try to avoid corn syrup when I can (though I could definitely work harder at avoiding more of it). There's no corn syrup in the crushed tomatoes or tomato paste.

I sautee onions and peppers and garlic, then I put it in the slow cooker and add the crushed tomatoes and tomato paste. I add oregano, basil, parmesan cheese, salt, pepper, a tiny pinch of sugar, a little red wine and raw hot italian sausages, cut in thirds and cook it all day long. When it's almost time to serve it, I skim the fat off the top (from the sausage) and stir it, then add more seasoning if necessary. I freeze some in freezer bags for another time, and use the rest that day.

I find that cooking the sausage (or meatballs sometimes) in the sauce gives the sauce a lot more flavor. The 'real Italians' here add bracciole and pork along with the sausage or meatballs while the sauce cooks.

I keep a few jars on hand for the nights I work, but typically I make homemade. quick, cheap, and tastes so much better. jarred has a "jarred" taste to me. almost sour or something..

Mostly Classico with spinach in it.

That's the biggest reason I avoid jarred sauces -- the sugar.

I make my own because I can control the ingredients -- canned home tomatoes, organic veggies, the exact spices I like, etc. I much prefer the taste of homemade sauce over jarred.

Another big reason to make your own is the cost savings. Make a big batch and freeze into serving-size containers.

In a pinch, Classico is a good brand. Still not as good as homemade, IMO.

Don't you know people on the itnernet not only make their own sauce they grow their own tomatoes;) They make their own fertilizer for their special tomatoes for their sauce you know:rolleyes1

Actually I do both. Every few months I make up some sauce for freezing and I also have some store bought on hand. However I don't even buy the jar, I buy the cheap can sauce but just veggie or the garlic basil sauce. For some reason the thought of jar/can meat sauce makes me :crazy2: I always have frozen cooked ground turkey on hand so I do a quick thaw and throw into my sauce.

I've been using the jarred and add stuff to it. I was thinking of making my own and freezing it, but never seem to have the time.

I use Classico - not as sweet as some jarred sauces and not too expensive, either. :thumbsup2 Their Four Cheese is yummy and I usually add a bit of ground beef into the sauce when we eat spaghetti.

We use jarred for convenience but I am very willing to make sauce to freeze IF I can just find a good recipe!! I have tried a couple times and I don't know what the problem is but they just taste gross... I must be doing something wrong. I'm talking completely from scratch, with plum tomatoes we grow in the summer. We were so looking forward to homemade sauce and we found a recipe online for how to do it with fresh tomatoes and even though it took awhile, DH and I agreed it really didn't taste good and was very "tomato-y". We ended up trying to doctor it up on our own but it hardly got better.

The following summer we decided to try again with a different recipe and although it was okay, it just didn't have that great homemade yummy taste we were hoping for. Maybe we'll try again but I want to find a recipe that just uses crushed tomatoes/tomato paste... I think I've given up on using fresh tomatoes. Hopefully we'll have better luck! I don't want to hijack your thread so I think I'll start a new post asking for good spaghetti sauce recipes.

I use the jar. Ragu is awful, also Kroger brand is watery.
Cheap sauce from Aldi's is really good. Pleasantly surprised. $1.19 a jar.:)

I grew up on Prego. It's still kind of my favorite. And I'm Italian. My sauce is just not as good. I think it must be because Prego is probably full o' sugar, but when given the choice between spending 2 hours in the kitchen or just spooning on the stuff from the jar, I always go with choice B.
