My husband and I are going to dinner for the first time at Jiko's in May. (We normally do the Yachtsman Steakhouse for a special meal out, but wanted to try something new.)

I see a lot of people recommending this restaurant on the boards, and I was wondering if anyone could advise me on their favorite dishes here.

Thanks!

my husband has had the beef filet w/macaroni and cheese. he declares this is wonderful. the salmon is great! i am sure there are more out there who can contribute. happy eating!:p

I ate there last month with my husband and 2 teenage sons. We really enjoyed the beef roll and duck and pork firecracker for appetizers. I really enjoyed the pork tenderloin. The side dish of sweet potato dumplings and mushroom ragout served iwth the pork was absolutely wonderful - I'm getting hungry just thinking about it!

If you indulge in alcoholic beverages, I'd recommend both a Killimarita - a particularly delicious margarita - and some South African wine.

I can vouch for that beef tenderloin.
My favorite right now is the Berbere Braised Lamb Shank--meat falls right off the bone and quite tasty too!!

I hope this doesn't sound like a silly suggestion for dinners who enjoy Yachtsman, but I love the marinated tofu w/ grains. DH really liked the salmon.

The kalamata olive flatbread is fantastic if you really love olives. For an entree I cannot recommend the filet with mac&cheese enough. Simply amazing.

Here's another vote for the Filet an Mac & Chhhese. Delish!

Jiko's was wonderful! The decor is gorgeous, and our table looked out over the pool. It was a really great meal.

For appetizer we got the crispy cinnamon spiced beef rolls, and they were yummy. We also got the maize tamales, but my DD and DH didn't like those too much. I loved them!

Lots of ppl have reccommended the filet w/ mac and cheese. My DD and I both got that and we *loved* it! My DH got the salmon, and he liked that, as well. My DD's boyfriend got the chermoula roasted chicken, and he ate every bite. He went wacky over the roasted garlic; he loves the stuff.

For desert my DD's boyfriend got the Tanzanian chocolate candies and loved them. What my DD got isn't on the menu anymore; it was a chocolate sampler that came w/ the chocolate banana bread pudding, white chocolate creme brulee and...something else that I can't remember. :) I don't like bananas, but my DD loved the bread pudding. Neither of us like creme brulee, but theirs was *excellent*... unfortunately, that exact dish isn't on the menu anymore. :(

Reading the Jiko's menu makes me wish I liked fish...

I was there in January, and I have to say the Grilled Filet with Mac 'n' Cheese and Red Wine Sauce is outstanding! They also have a wonderful Appetizer Sampler Platter that is not on the menu but available by request. Don’t leave without ordering the unbelievably wonderful chocolate-filled beggars purses with a honey dipping sauce, one of Disney’s best desserts.

Yep, that's what my DD's boyfriend got. He raved about it for days. :)

I too like the fillet and mac & cheese, but I am not all that adventurous.

That being said, I will put in a HUGE plug for the flat breads. Last time I was there was February, and they had a third kind......All are completely yummy!!!

PS- Don't forget about the wines!

We were at Jiko's last June.
I had read many positive reviews about the Monkfish. I'm not a big huge fish eater, but love lobster/crab. So I tried it - it was to die for!
This is what we had:
Duck Firecracker "Hot Spring and Cold Summer Rolls with Oyster Dipping Sauce (excellent appitizer)
Green Asparagus Soup "with shredded spinach, homemade yogurt and a hint of peri-peri pepper" (very good)
Pan Roasted Monkfish "with vegetables of the moment, crispy parsnips and tomoato butter sauce" (very yum!!)
Berbere Braised Lamb Shank "with toasted couscous, baby spinach and berbere sauce" (DH didn't like - he doesn't like couscous anyway so don't know why he ordered this, and lamb shank was a bit like a Fred Flinstone piece of meat:rolleyes: )
Afrikaanse Milk Tart "with dried Cherry broth and toasted nuts" (again to die for)
I hope this helps...........now I'm hungry!

My problem is I want to order more than I know I will be able to eat. I want one of the Flatbreads (we sampled these in August in the concierge's lounge) Duck Firecracker, Asparagas soup, Spring Field Greens and the Filet and Mac and dessert, of course a couple glasses of wine and coffee (I think the coffee is special here isn't it?) I wonder if they would frown on me ordering the Filet with a side of Mac off the children's menu. We are not big eaters, when we were at AKL in August we canceled our PS's for Jiko's and Boma's as we were full from the concierge's offerings.

Hi CoolDisneyCat - Our countdown timer's are practically the same:D we are staying at BWV this time also. We'll be in NC in July, we LOVE NC we stay outside of Ashville at Lake Leurer(sp?)

thanks everyone -- you're the best. what great suggestions! I can't wait until our dinner now... Guess I better save some room :-)

We had the Olive Flatbred for starters. We then the Beef Tenderloin w/ macaroni & cheese, and Pork tenderloin dinners. Jiko's is our favorite restaurant at WDW, we eat here on every trip. Make sure you take time to stroll outside either before or after dinner, the grounds are really beautiful.

filet and macaroni w/cheese at an exotic restaurant like Jiko? When I was there we laughed at the idea of a deluxe retaurant serving mac and cheese with dinner. Someone has to tell me what is so good about this dish??? btw we had the monkfish and pork and they were both excellent. The spring rolls were the same.

I also once mocked the beef w/mac+cheese...... until my wife actually ordered it. Good stuff.

Granted, it's not rocket science, but they use four or five different cheeses (there was a fontina and a goat cheese, I think.... forget the others) and, with the wine sauce, it complements the filet real well. It's not particularly exotic, but it's a good concept and well-executed. Besides, the presence of mac+cheese on an otherwise intimidating menu gave Jiko instant credibility with our kids.

Since that visit, we've incorporated the whole "steak w/wine reduction and four-cheese mac+cheese" into our cooking rotation at home.
