We'll be staying at OKW for the first time ever as DVC (rented points from a friend) and have no idea what to bring, are there cleaning supplies etc? Groceries are ordered but is there something else we should think about bringing with us?

Sorry but we've only stayed at WDW-resorts as guests in rooms before, not in a vacation home, we're excited though, a 1 br at OKW!!!

This was totally unplanned though, we did have reservations at Pop for our stay and cancelled due to my knee injury at work, I'm having surgery 8/29 and we leave for WDW 9/9-9/16, might sound crazy but we so had looked forward to going (booked in January) & this unit was available...in Sept? I bet that doesn't happen too often? Someone must have cancelled...

Anyways, any info you have for a newbie will be greatly appreciated! :)

We lost out on the free dining plan but we gained our stay at OKW, which seems to be a beautiful resort!!!!! :Pinkbounc

Will you be able to walk up/down stairs? If not, ask your friend to request a first floor or elevator building.

There are dishwasher crystals, diswashing liquid, a small sponge for cleaning, and a 1 use box of laundry detergent.

Have a great time. We had our first stay in an OKW 1 bedroom in June and we were so very happy with the accomodations and the stay. I am not able to easily walk down steps, so I had requested the first floor or an elevator building, and we got both, first floor in an elevator building!

There are also paper towels, dish cloths and a vacuum cleaner in the closet .. not that I've used it! :rotfl2:

Thanks for your so quick reply, this was a totally unexpected turn to us having to cancel our Aug reservation, does our friend have to call now and request for a first floor/ elevator building or can we do it ourselves when we get there?

Even if my knee will be sore, I will just be happy to be there, to see my DH and DD 11 happy will make me happy, if you know what I mean?

I know I will need a wheelchair at times, like if we get our room far at the edges of the resort sort of thing, and at the parks too, we know we need to be there early to be able to get a wheelchair but also my DH and DD knows, that if it's too sore and I need to rest, they can take off and have fun, just to bring the camera! :) Then I'll join later for dinner etc, we'll be playing this by ear kind of thing!!

Thank you so much!

I would ask your friend to call and put it on the reservation. It may work at check in, depending how crowded the resort is I guess. We have stayed at OKW twice and have gotten an elevator building both times.

I think you will have a great time. I can't imagine a better, nicer place to recouperate.

You can always rent an ECV also, and that will take a lot of strain off your knee. I needed one a couple of trips, and it was a lifesaver! Very easy too. I rented from a place called CARE medical equipment, and they had the ECV waiting at OKW when we arrived. They in turn gave me a 1st floor unit (I didn't request that until we arrived), and was able to get on and off the buses easily with the ECV. The carts get loaded before the other guests, so I got pretty good at having it all backed up to the curb and ready to load when the bus arrived.

If you haven't already, check out the disABILITIES FAQs thread near the top of the disABILITIES Board. There is information there about all the places to get wheelchairs and ECVs (including a link to Care Medical).

We called and requested a first floor/building with elevator and hopefully will be able to get that.

We've checked out allears.net for information on renting a wheelchair, I don't want the EVC (SP?) I am hopeful that 10 days post-op all I will need is a wheelchair for longer distances...It's an artiscope deal to repair my meniscus and drain all the fluid out, not major surgery on my knee.

Still, never had any knee work done before, so I might just be too optimistic?

I'll be recuperating at WDW and OKW, is there any better place to be? :)

Thanks for all your info!!!

I like to pack a little extra detergent. I measure out a loads worth in a snack ziploc, then pack them all in a larger ziploc in case of a spill. Call me crazy, but I like to pack a fitted sheet for the bed. We have a really loud green & white striped one that I bought super cheap and the bright colors help me not to forget it. We place it right on top of the bottom sheet. Without the daily housekeeping, we don't make the bed up quite as well as they do and the bottom sheet is always slipping off. I can't stand to find that I'm sleeping on the mattress.

After starting recovery from my rotator cuff repair, I now am faced with what you are going to be having as well. I'll find out more from my surgeon later this week. I'd talk to your surgeon and let him know your plans. He may be able to offer some good advice.

I can't think of a better place to recuperate! I read on another thread about a kind of cane that turned into a 3 legged seat that may come in handy in the lines if you are not using a wheelchair. I think the poster found it in a camping store.

Anyway, we are doing our first DVC trip too and I am bringing a container of Clorox wipes to wipe things down with.
