What the heck is a Dole Whip??

I have been to the MK probably 25 times and have never had one, nor do I know where to get one? Whata the scoop? LOL

As a dole whip fan I look forward to trying it on our upcoming trip. My question is...does no one have this in there hometown? We have had it at our local drive in for about 20 years. Or is it one of those "better at Disney" things like how crappy red stripe beer is good when your in Jamaica.

The rumor has always been that Dole only ever sold it in Disney and Hawaii. I discovered that they had Dole pineapple soft serve at a local frozen yogurt store. Good move for Dole! Menchies is the yogurt chain....check it out!

For what ever reason the independent mom and pop type stores just haven't sold it. So its just isn't widely available. Hence for 97.3% of the people Disney is the only place to get it. My local park, Kennywood, had it last summer.

So it would be more like crappy red stripe beer is only available in Jamaica so that's what makes it special when you are there. ;)

Actually it's not ice cream- it's lactose free (and gluten free!) it does have sodium caseinate, so not safe for those who have a dairy allergy...

But definitely not ice cream

It is identical to Pineapple Gelato- like a fresh frozen pineapple. All fruit flavors of gelato are dairy free and contain almost no fat (not fat free, only about 6% though) Not be confused with Sorbet which is on the icy side. And, since Gelato is now more popular in the US you should be able to indulge in a bit of this Disney treat at home!

Are you sure about the no dairy.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gelato

Gelato is made with milk, cream, various sugars, and flavoring such as fresh fruit and nut purees.

A form made with water and no milk or soy milk is called sorbetto.

In Italy you can't call it Gelato unless is has 3.5% butterfat. I always thought what made it different was less air.

Main reason I ask is that I am always looking for non dairy ice cream like desserts.

So there is vanilla, pinepple and orange? Which one is the best? :) Only 2 locations in the entire park, interesting.... I wonder why they dont serve them anywhere else.

"Best" is totally subjective. I always go for the pineapple/vanilla swirl.

For me, it's gotta be the pineapple- mostly because its a novel treat. I can get orange soft serve anywhere :)

we make our own between trips , great refresher on those hot summer nights

Pineapple Dole Whip
Adventureland

Ingredients:
2 cans (20 oz. each) DOLE Crushed Pineapple
2 tablespoons lemon juice
2 tablespoons lime juice
1/3 cup sugar
1-1/2 cups heavy whipping cream, whipped

Instructions:

Drain pineapple; reserve 2 tablespoons juice. Set aside.

Place pineapple, lemon juice, lime juice, sugar and reserved pineapple juice in blender or food processor container. Cover; blend until smooth.

Pour into two 1-quart freezer zipped bags. Store bags flat in freezer. Freeze 1-1/2 hours or until slushy.

Stir pineapple slush gently into whipped cream until slightly blended, in large bowl.

Return to freezer until completely frozen, about 1 hour and serve

1. So there is vanilla, pinepple and orange? Which one is the best? :)

2. Only 2 locations in the entire park, interesting....

3. I wonder why they dont serve them anywhere else.

1. The vanilla is going to be just like any other soft serve and some say the orange tastes like baby aspirin. Most would go for the pineapple since it is such a unique flavor.

2. Only two locations at all of WDW.

3. I guess its to make it special and there are only two places on property that they are pushing the tropical feel.

I was just about to explain why it is lactose, but not dairy free as I've followed this product carefully. DH is lactose intolerant. DS is dairy allergic but has been able to eat increasing forms of dairy in the last year, including some cheeses. I actually ordered this mix to test my DS at home before our vacation. The bag I have doesn't have ingredients on it, but I read them online before ordering. I just went to the website to link some information explaining the sodium caseinite and it appears to me that the orange and pineapple mix may have very recently changed to dairy free. Sodium caseinite is no longer listed in some flavors' ingredients and this sales brochure labels the pineapple and orange as "NOW VEGAN".

You can buy the mix from Precision Foods.

I've been adding it in increasing amounts to DS's smoothies and was thrilled to see no reaction, but now I'm not sure if it's because he can tolerate sodium caseinite or if the mix I have is actually dairy free.

I would contact Precision foods and give them the Lot number. They should be able to tell you if you have the new batch.

I've lived in Europe and our family ate gelato every week, and daily during the summer.

Gelato differs from American Ice Cream because by law in the US the product must contain at least 10% milk fat (and that's not even premium products which are pushing 20%) to be labeled as ice cream since Gelato is much lower in fat, 6-7% it cannot be called ice cream. Gelato flavors that contain dairy typically contain 2% milk rather heavy cream used in ice cream. That said, I think dairy filled flavors like chocolate, vanilla, pistachio, etc. gelato seem richer and more full of flavor than any American ice cream product and it's all lower in fat! Awesome win win!

The fruit flavors (sometimes also tagged in shop as sorbetto) are dairy free. These are nothing like sorbet which has a much more icy in consistency. Fruit flavors are like fresh frozen delicious ripe fruit. Pineapple, strawberry, lemon, lime, grapefruit, orange, raspberry, cherry... I could go on.

I prefer the orange float; orange soft serve with pineapple juice. Our local frozen yogurt store also carries the pineapple and orange soft serves. I had both together last night and about shed a tear. It reminded me sooo much of MK.

IM BAAAAAAACK!!!
Had my first dole whip yesterday....pinapple just with pinapple ice cream. It was just as good as advertised....oh my goodness, Im in love! I will never go back to MK again, without getting at least 1!!!!

Off-topic, but how did you do with Flynn merch? Any luck?

Aww, thanks for asking. I wish I had better news, but nothing!! There was 1 stick figure playset, but that isnt really what she is wanting. A plush doll, a tshirt, a towel, or most anything would thrill her.

I think I am going to have a friend make her a custom Flynn dress for her bday :)
