How low can I set the thermostat while we're in Disney without coming home to icicles hanging from the ceiling (we live in central NJ)?

We leave ours at 55*. We don't want our furniture, etc. to have too much of a temp. change, plus my house plants. Also, when we return, we don't want it to take forever to heat back up to a *livable* temp.

Really don't think our heating unit will set much lower than 50* anyway - maybe others will set differently.

If we were going this time of year, we'd probably also leave it in the mid - 50s

It wouldn't even occur to me to turn the heat down while we are away. I find that funny because I do turn up the air while we are on vacation.

Just be careful that any pipes in exposed walls wouldn't get too cold. I guess that wouldn't happen, but I thought I'd mention it.

We were told 55 by housing (we live in military housing). But we have animals in the house so I'm planning on 65 since it's been in the negatives outside.

We leave ours at 58°. If not for our dog I would keep it cooler, probably 52° or so, but she's older, arthritic and doesn't do well with being kenneled so we leave her home with a friend coming over morning and night to feed, water, and walk her. At 58° with her bed by the fireplace she's comfortable.

I am not sure what we are going to do. We are in central TX, but it will be down to freezing some nights. The crab and the dog are staying with my parents, but I don't want DDs tropical fish to freeze! I may leave on a lamp near the tank.

Set your heat for mid 50s and open all sink cabinets. You can go lower but when you turn the heat back up the walls will sweat. We set ours for 54F.

We actually winterize our shore house when we go to Disney. Power loss is so common that we can't count that the heat will work the whole time we are gone.

We turn ours down to 58 degrees if we are gone. Our thermostat won't go lower than 50 (not that you'd want to anyway).

We usually leave ours at 62-64 because of our pets.

64?! That's warmer than I set it when we're home! :scared:

My thermostat is set to 57 through the day, 61 in the evening, and 59 at night. We have dogs and the vet says that is fine.

You don't have a heater in the tank?
When we go in the winter we just leave the heat off completely. It still freezes outside but inside stays warm enough. If we have someone staying at the house they turn the heat on as they need it. :) Our fish tanks have heat so they stay warm enough. Actually they have to stay warm enough, they are salt water and we don't want everything to die because it gets too cold. :)

I was told 50 would be fine,

but just because I'm the nervous type we go with 55 and have never had any problems.

This is very important. The lower level of our house is much colder than the upstairs and we had a guinea pig die because he was left downstairs.:sad1:

We go to 58 and leave the cabinet under the kitchen and bathroom sink open so the pipes will not freeze.
