What Snakes Have You seen?

Saw a small snake at FW outside the 2000 loop comfort station, it was red, black and yellow. I don't remember the rhyme on how to tell the harmless from the vanomous but it was the harmless kind.

Saw a black racer last month slithering across the parking lot at Fantasia mini golf.

Is it true that if they have a diamond-shaped head that they are poisonous? Not that I stay around long enough to really check it out!

What time of day are snakes most active? Ex. should I not be the first one in the lazy river? What time of year are they most active in Florida?

Ah! This is a bit alarming - you don't see much in the way of venomous snakes, spiders, insects, etc in the UK (just politicians, estate agents and lawyers :rotfl: )

I assume these things are more likely to run/slither away from people than attack?

Should I be worried by any spiders / insects too? :guilty:

I saw a black snake at Animal Kingdom last August. It rushed out of the bushes, crossed the pathway, and went in another bush. Creepy!

I can't remember that rhyme either, although it applies to the coral snake which is the most venomous snake in the US.

Oh, I think I remember it now: Red touching yellow, kill a fellow, red touching black, friend of Jack. Or something like that.

I started to wonder if I should have started this but after my last trip in June where I was not paying attention and just stopped short of a big long black snake at the CR by the pool bar I thought maybe it was just me that saw them. As I said I have not heard anything about someone being bit as I suppose most people just leave them alone. I HATE SNAKES! The reply about BB and TL does make me think twice about going in the lazy river. Didn't really mean to scare anyone from going to WDW it's not like you can't walk anywhere without seening one. I only saw the one at the CR on the last day of vacation ( after 10 days). Other responses are from guests that have yet to see any.

We've seen racers several times over the years. Perhaps the most dramatic was one time lying on the beach at River Country. We saw several CM's running towards the Bay lake side of the beach. Guests were screaming and scattering all over the place.

A few minutes later they came running back with a HUGE water moc! :scared1:

ive seen a few over the years at yacht and beach towards epcot. only black racers though. i dont like snakes, spiders etc etc but what can ya do :confused3 its all nature filled still there, and theyre bound to be there.

Red and yellow kills a fellow. Red and black is safe for Jack

I've said this before on Dis, but here it goes.

My friend was bitten by a snake while walking over a bridge at typhoon lagoon. Yup bitten right on the foot, fang marks and all.

Disney didnt so much as offer her a return trip to the park on another day (her foot swelled up and ached for 3 days...) they assured her it wasnt poisoneous and slapped a bandaid on it and that was that.

She is still freaked out and that was last year.

Not sure how others feel, but my god if myself or my child were bitten by a SNAKE someone better set up long term psychiatric counseling for me!

A coule of weeks ago, we saw a snake on the walkway from the BC to the BCVs. Later that week we saw one of those SIDEWIDERS near the entrance of our villa at OKW. Saw LOTS of snake food like frogs and little lizards, too. OH and a gator in the canal at the BCVS.

I thought sidewinders were only found in Australia?

I've never seen a snake at WDW.

As for the rest of life, I couldn't tell ya - hard to ID them when one is running away and screaming! :goodvibes

Place: Wilderness lodge pool
date :October 2003
My family was enjoying a swim while i relaxed and read a book. I closed my eyes and heard my kids and others around me kind of go oh...OH..OH...
I opened my eyes slowly and saw every one scrambling away from me and my lounge chair. I said WHAT??!! I figured it was a bee or a wasp. No one would answer me and I calmly again said what is it. Finally my 5 year old said Mommy a SNAKE ! I looked at this HUGE black snake about 4 feet long(no joke) climbing up on my chair(where I was sitting but not for long) when all of the sudden the snake saw a frog or toad and lunged at it and into the bush next to me it went. the pool attenents called the wildlife control people and about 5 or 6 of them were looking for it. Others had seen how big it was so they must of figured they needed extra help in catching it. They didn't find it however.
I was kind of(absolutely) mad at hubby for not telling me it was climbing onto my chair but he said he thought if he told me I might do something (scream no doubt) and it would bite me. He thought it would just slither away without me opening my eyes. :sad2:

aren't most snakes more active in the summer than the winter? corect me if I'm wrong, but I live in the south and never really see snakes in the winter, but have seen a bunch sunbathing in the spring/summer. any "snake experts" here?

At the bus stop at the AKL this past week, we saw two black snakes. One was kind of poised to attack with his neck up, and the other was just on its way. It frieked me out. They weren't in the seating area, just in the shrub area behind the benches. I don't know if they are harmless, but the resort worker (painter) wasn't alarmed by thier presence nor were the other guests waiting for the buses. EEEW!

I haven't seen snakes on my previous visits. I think they must be more active in the summer because we saw gheckos all over the place (yummy snake food). Again...EEEEW!!

Probably not a sidewinder. They are a type of rattlesnake indigenous to the deserts of the US Southwest. They move by touching only a small part of their body on the hot sand, rather than slithering along the ground like other snakes. But Floridas got more critters than most places have ever thought of.

For those who are interested, the University of Florida has a lot of great information about snakes in the state.

There are 46 types of snakes in Florida, of which 6 are poisonous. 3 types of rattlesnakes, water moccassin(cottonmouth), copperhead, and the coral snake are poisonous. According to the site, the rhyme for the coral snake is:

‘If red touches yellow, it can kill a fellow,’ and ‘If its nose is black, it’s bad for jack.’

I love snakes, especially when they are on the other side of a thick pane of glass.

Of course, the reported species don't include the pythons and boa constrictors that have been found in Florida, presumedly dumped by their owners when they got too big and were set "free".

We saw a very long and large black snake at OKW a few years back. We were walking from the parking lot up the sidewalk to the general store when we saw this snake come out of the bushes on the right side. We stopped to let it pass - the head was well off into the bushes on the left side of the sidewalk before the tail appeared on the right side. My daughter commented "well, that was a long snake." LOL!
