What Snakes Have You seen?

One of you must have been there in June. I went to get some more ice at Fort Wilderness and there was a lady standing on the bench in front of the comfort station. She was frantically looking around her. She asked me if I knew anything about snakes, I said not a lot but what is it? She said she saw a black snake with red stripes go across the walkway in front of the comfort station. I said I know there are two kinds like that, one poisonous, the other not. I asked how long before had it been there and she said about 10 minutes. I said well he's probably long gone by now if he was heading away from there. She wouldn't come down until someone helped her get back to her camper, which was in the direction it came from...lol. I just told her to leave it alone and it will leave you alone and watch where you're walking...lol. Hope she didn't run into the "killer armadillo" on the way...lol.

Not showing this thread to DW.

Ive been going to WDW since 74 and have never seen a snake.
Alligators,Deers,Rabbits,Armidillos and other assorted wildlife but never a snake.
And my last stary was in Oct. at the Poly during Hurricane Wilma with plenty of rain still no snakes.

Ok picture this... it was Sep 11,2001 and they just closed the parks (attacks) and we were only allowed to go back to our resorts. We were on the 3rd floor on the BC , get off the elevator and there was a black snake in the hallway. We got passed it to our room and called the front desk. We kept watching it until it went under someones door. I was banging on the door to make sure no one was in there. The animal guy came up and we told him it where it was and he got it!!! Can you imagine coming back to your room and finding a snake in your luggage?????? ahhhhgggg :scared1:

Some strange force has compelled me to read this whole thread! The above poster has me freaked out of my mind. You mean to tell me, I'm NOT safe in my room?? And all these snakes in the water...what's that all about? I was just about to take a bath and now I can't because I keep imagining a snake finding it's way up through the drain in my tub.

Oh my gosh, that was my childhood fear, and it may still be.

I just want you all to know that I have my feet up on my chair!!!!! EEEEEEEEWWWWWWWWWWWWW!!!!!!!!!! I HATE SNAKES!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I honestly don't know if I will ever be able to go in another lazy river again....... :scared1:

We saw one go into a pool from the bushes at Typhoon Lagoon last September. It was pretty small & the lifeguards didn't seem bothered at all. Jumped in, fished it out & threw it over the fence. It didn't seem far enough away to prevent it from returning though we never saw it again.

OMG!!!!!!I can't believe this. I live in the AZ desert and see them on the road, on the trail and then 1 in front of my house last month!! I don't want to go to WDW and see them there. I won't even ride the Indiana Jones ride. It has taken me years to not be afraid to live here. I would just die on the spot if I saw one at WDW. I know we see very few in March here, so I hope we wont' see many there in March! :scared1: :scared1: UGHHHHH!! Why did I read this thread, I knew better.

It was at camp Minnie Mickey in Animal Kingdom, as it was October it was kinda quiet and there was a small queue, so as we were walking down the path to join the queue, I saw a snake, it was brightly coloured black, orange, and white. I thought it was a childs misplaced toy that I was going to hand over to lost and found as I nearly bent over to pick it up.... and then it moved!
I jumped back very quickly and out of the blue a CM appeared who cordoned off the whole area and called in the snake catchers. For the rest of my holiday I kept one eye open for snakes!

Why did I bother to read this? I HATE snakes. I freak out when I see a little garder snake in the woods when I take my retriever out for hikes in the woods. I hope in December the snakes are hybernating like they do in NY. I definitely don't want to see any snakes.

We were at Walt Disney World this June30th -July14th We stayed at POFQ, Pop, WL, and 8 days at Poly. Never saw a snake anywhere. We were on the bottom floor, balcony on the lagoon at Poly and a water view at POFQ. We did here about a snake in a room over at BC or Boardwalk but don't know if that was true or not. I guess we never really even thought about snakes to busy having fun!

Have seen many Black Racers. They are harmless and very shy and eat rodents.

Don't worry Mickey! I've got your back!!!

Also, wanted to say that we saw a copperhead in the bushes at POP (between Lady Building & the pool bar). We have copperheads in the woods behind our house (and occasionally in the parking lot- HELLO flashlight!), so I knew it probably needed to be moved. I stayed & kept an eye on itwhile DS ran to tell someone at the pool bar.

They came right away & got it with one of those snake wrangling sticks. I asked what they do with them- guy said animal control takes them out to the uninhabited part of the World... Not sure I believe that though! :confused3

THis is terrible!!!! I will be checking under my bed the bathroom and my room every day that we come back hoping that a snake has not slithered on in!!!! How can I relax UGHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
I am crying thinking about this whole snake situation. I always thought I would be safe at Disney and that some how they had a magical way of keeping snakes away from people!!! :sad2:

Oh ,I forgot to mention the first time I saw and heard that there were snakes. We were staying at Dixie Landings (sorry just like to call it that) anyway we rented the foot paddle boats and were quite far out on the river when there it was A SNAKE IN THE WATER!!! My SIL and I paddled as fast as we could to get back. We asked the CM about this and he said there were plenty in the river as it was close to what was then the Disney Resort that was originally called Vacation Homes, you know the ones that were in the trees. Anyway I have never rented a paddle boat since and I guess I always thought the snakes just stayed at that old resort. Boy it seems I was very wrong. Might have to think twice about going back to TL.

What I don't like is when housekeeping keep the the door open while they're cleaning a room that has no inside corridors but open to the outside. If they have their backs turned, anything can slither in the room.

I've been to WDW 14 times. Went 7/7 -7/17 this year and saw snakes for the 1st time ever. This was my first summer trip. Saw one on a bridge over the lazy river at typhoon lagoon, and one wrapped around my poorly hit golf ball in the schrubs at Fantasia Gardens!

I've got to know, did you take the 1 stroke penalty, or fight it out for your ball? :teeth:

Is it true that if they have a diamond-shaped head that they are poisonous? Not that I stay around long enough to really check it out!

What time of day are snakes most active? Ex. should I not be the first one in the lazy river? What time of year are they most active in Florida?

Not unless you eat one! Har har har. Sorry. Poisonous means if you eat it you get sick. Venomous means if it bites you, you get sick.

I cannot tell you how jealous I am of all you herp-spotters. I love amphibians and reptiles and would love to see more. Florida is herp heaven and I never seem to see anything but the anoles!

Edited to add: After reading this thread, I'm surprised at how many people believe that Disney should be able to keep wildlife away from the parks and resorts. Not possible or practical, and they do keep the rodent population down. Did you also know that a cat bite is far more dangerous due to bacteria than a non-venomous snake bite? Calm down, folks. The snakes will not hurt you unless you actively threaten them.

Actually after reading all of this I am looking forward to seeing a Snake or two...just NOT TOO CLOSE UP! :rotfl2: I feel like I know more of what to look for and I will definately NOT be leaving the sidewalk too much without looking at everything first! :teeth: the good thing is that if I leave THEM alone, they will leave ME alone! :woohoo:

It just occured to me since snakes like rodents UMMM isn't Mickey a MOUSE? :rotfl2: watch out Mickey all these snakes are out to eat you!!!!! I do have a funny snake story. We camped at FW and one day my mom was walking back to the camper when she took a "short cut" through the playground and path next to our camper when she saw a SNAKE. The animal control came out but couldn't find it. :furious: They told her that if it's a poisonous snake they catch and release in a different area.. I said great JOB SECURITY!!!! :lmao: Not too comforting for ME someone who is TERRRIFIED of snakes. Glad I read all 8 pages of this post. I am SURE to book a non ground floor room :teeth:

We usually never see snakes at WDW but this year at POR we saw about 5 or 6.

Was quite interesting how many people were scared of them - we were more facinated than scared - being from the UK we dont particularly have wild snakes!
