What scared *you* when you were "young"?

Inspired by all these great Halloween posts...

1. Amityville Horror, the book, which we all thought was "real". I still can't stand the sound of flies buzzing in the windows...
2. Sybill, the book and movie, still can't clear my mind of "hold your water"...
3. Going to bed with an open closet door, or having a dust ruffle so I couldn't see under the bed (like I *wanted* to see what was under there, with it's long fingers waiting to grab me...)
4. Late night call in radio programs where they interviewed wackos about esp/telekenisis/ghosts/other scary stuff. Great to listen to right before going to sleep...

Clowns!! Hated them even more after I read "It".
The thing that scared me the most was the last 5 minutes of the movie "Carrie". I had to sleep with a light on for a month after that!!

Movies and books did not scare me very much because I understood that they were not real....but when I was younger I had this very, very scary nightmare that I remember to this day. It was one of those dreams where you are in it, but it is more like you are watching the scene unfold from above, not actually participating as yourself in the dream. My slightly older cousin and I were playing on a beach, building sand castles. The scene pulls back and over the top of a sand dune these huge (I mean giant) red crabs are coming after us. They are like the size of those giant bugs in horror movies that are bigger than cars. I was so freaked out by this dream. It was the worst nightmare I ever had. I know it doesn't sound very scary...but I was totally scared out of my mind. I have a hard time going to the beach and standing in the water when I can not see the bottom. If I ever step on anything, that is it. I am jumping up into SO arms and not putting my feet down again till I can see. But I am not actually afraid of crabs, fish, or seaweed itself. As long as I can see it and know what it is it doesn't bother me.

The Jersey Devil... now anyone who grew up in Southern New Jersey knows what I am talking about...

We did a folklore assembly in the first grade... (this was 1975-76). It was a great story telling session until the lights dimmed, and a horrifying devil mask came out....

My parents had friends that lived in DEEP Pine Barrens, no neighbors for miles kind of thing, dirt road no street lights, etc... and the car stalled (one part of the urban legend is that the Jersey Devils "stalls" cars)... I just about DIED! (and I was probably in the 4th grade!)

That was aslo the same year that the principal of my school dressed up as a monster and crawled on the roof of the school and scared the kids....

Scared me to death when the first Planet of the Apes came out. I couldn't have been more than 7 or 8 and I was afraid they were going to come and take me away from my family! lol Seems funny now, though.

Oh, and of course, the boogy monster was another scary creature that my older siblings tortured me with. And, they used to tell me that ghosts lived up in our attic and that they were going to put me up there if I was bad. (Yeah, I think you were in on it, Lucky!)

Of course, what didn't hurt me made me stronger and nothing really scares me now!

4.African Statues--Will not bring them in my house. My grandmother inlaw's friend went to Africa on vacation. She fell in love with this African Statue which was very unique I might add. The trouble started when she brought it home Her house felt as if it took on an evil personality(no kidding). Footsteps, hearing doors slam shut (which were already closed) and feeling someone get into bed with her when she LIVED ALONE really freaked her out. She had her minister come in to pray and bless the home. From what I was told, The statue flew off the mantle when the minister asked GOD to reveal where the evil spirit existed. She was advised to get rid of the statue-- which she did. She has been haunt free ever since.

Oh I remembered something else. My aunt lived on a street that had a cemetary at the end. She has a daughter that is the same age as me and then her oldest daughter had a son our age. So there were 3 of us against our younger cousin. I bet to this day she can't go by that cemetary without thinking of the headless monster that we tortured her with.

Oh and another one we did when we were kids. There is a large power plant here with a large smoke stack on it. It is right on the Mississippi River and there is also a park there where we had many a school field trip. We were told as long as I can remember that a man working at that power plan feel down that stack and now he is half man/ half skeleton and haunts that park. We were told that there is a house in the woods that he lives in. Its so funny but we were terrified back then. We would get in these big groups and hold arms and walk through the park.

The first scary movie I saw was the original version of The Haunting. It was on TV and I remember watching part of it from behind the couch.

Dark doorways scared me when I was real young. They still kind of creep me out.

My stepmother and I'm not kidding!!
