What proof does your school require to register?

I am registering DS for kindergarten tomorrow and am always amazed at all the info they require for it....birth certificate, social security card, proof of address, and proof of immunization. Amazed is not really the word I guess. It just brought to mind how illegal immigrants get their children into school. Do they not have to have all of this paperwork?

My school system doesn't require social security numbers from anyone, so that doesn't apply to us. However, for the others, an illegal alien would be able to provide them just as well. After all, they were born somewhere...even Mexico issues birth certificates. They can go get their immunizations the same as anyone else and they have to be living somewhere.

We needed a lot. Certified birth certificate, SS# (although I don't think we needed to show the card), 2 proofs of residency and immunizations.

I just got the kindergarten round up letter yesterday- I have to bring birth certificate, immunization records.....I think they ask for social security # but it's not required. I don't think I have to show proof of residency. I don't remember having to do that with DS#1 anyway.

We need 2 proofs of residence, one must be something official like your drivers license. For the second they like current utility bills. I know someone who brought a Feb/March bill and they turned them away.

You need all the vaccines in the right order at the right times. My DS had a problem with one if his shots. In TX you aren't current if you had your final one before your 1st birthday. He had his a few days before so he had to get another one before they would register him.

We need both a social security card and birth certificate. Here you need the actual card, a number won't do. Even if you are here on a visa you need a birth certificate.

It is strict but after school starts, they adopt a don't ask, don't tell type policy.

Yup!

Birth Certificate
SS #
Immunizations
Proof of address

Illegal immigratans can get all this, except SS# if the kids aren't citizens, but the schools don't require SS#, and foregin Birth certificate is fine also. :confused3

We had to bring settlement papers for our house when we registered our kids. They wanted actual proof that we owned the house!

Wow, not here, just utility (sp?) bills, DL, or ID.

NYC public schools require all the listed above and the child must be present.

Some schools won't even look at the paperwork if the child isn't there. :confused3

Some schools will not accept a rental lease or phone bill as proof of residence.

We have to provided SS #'s but not the card and immunization records. I suppose if you are moving to the area you have to provide proof of residency. I know in our new town they wouldn't let us register until we had a signed purchase agreement on a house in the district. They haven't asked to actually see that but I suppose if they didn't believe we were really moving there they would. Minnesota has statewide open enrollment so you don't have to live in the district where you attend school but you do have to apply for open enrollment in January.

(not our district) but one of the bay area district's requires "proof of income" (actual paystubb or verification of child support, public assistance grant...). the reason being is the district is REALY popular and they have had problems with people establishing mail drops so their out of county kids can attend (which has resulted in other actual resident kids not being able to attend their local schools). if the paystubb reflects an unrealistic work location for the parent the school initiates a secondary residency verification process. if the person is on public assistance in another county (here it is issued only in the county of actual residency) unless that county has been notified to transfer the case to county of the district and their county has verified residency-the student is denied enrollment.

i think our district (my kids attend private which only requires immunization and bc's) requires bc's, immunizations, recent physical, and proof of residency via utility bill. if they are above kindergarten they require transcripts from prior schools. if the student is not the child of the adult registering they must provide proof of legal guardianship or ability to enroll (grandma can't just enroll the kid, she has to be legaly able to do so).

in california ALL children (despite their legal or illegal citizenship status) must receive free public education from k-12th grade so there is no requirement that any citizenship be verified.

In our school district, we have to show a birth certificate, provide a SS#, have a Health form (with immunization info, hearing/sight check, etc.) filled out by the pediatrician, and the parent(s) fill out a couple of forms about the child's development and abilities to help the school determine if he/she needs special services and/or more challenging work.

Utility bills do not work here. You need to take a tax duplicate if you own, or a lease agreement if you rent. This is one of the top suburban schools in the Toledo area with more homes being built every day; they don't want any students who don't actually live here.

Actually here the big headache isn't for illegal aliens, it is for the children who are technically "homeless" without an official residence. There was a court case involving a local school a couple of years ago and their constitutional right to be able to enroll in Public Schools even if their parents are technically only registered with a local shelter. There were also some exeptions made this past fall where families who relocated into this area after the hurricanes were allowed to register at any Public School with whatever documents they could manage to find, or no documents at all.

When I registered my son for the Early Childhood program I needed our Property Tax bill (they would accept a lease agreement or mortgage statement), my driver's liscense, a current utility bill, and a physical done on the state form which included his immunizations, and an official birth certificate. There was actually a whole list of documents that you could choose from - those were just the easiest for me to pull out of the files.

We have LOTS of illegal immigrants who go to school around here. In our schools, they'll accept a TIN in place of a Social Security card. A TIN stands for Taxpayer Identification Number. Also, the kids often use the address of a relative who lives in the school district. The problem comes when the kid gets into trouble at school and so the school tries to call the phone # given. I think they're TRYING to enforce needing proof that the people at the address are the legal guardians of the children (and yes, we do have kids who live in Mexico and cross over daily to attend school illegally).

Some schools here won't accept a rental lease. Anyone can pick one up at a Rite Aid or mom and pop pharmacy.

My son's school won't accept a phone bill because it's to easy to have an extra line installed in a friend's house.

So, if you lease an apartment, you don't get to send your kids to school?

It does seem like the required list is getting longer. We have to supply:

*birth certificate
*health report/physical completed before start of school
*immunization record
*proof of address
*SS#

Seems a bit overkill if you ask me? :confused3

Of course you do. You just have to use something else to show proof of residence. (gas bill or electric bill)

Some schools won't accept rental leases, phone bills or cable bills.
