What professions do you feel are underpaid? (Inspired by luvmarypoppins)

On the other hand, I do think most lawyers get paid too much, but that's just based on what I hear, not what I know.
I remember one of the docs at the hospital I worked at put his daughter through law school. She came out, got her first job, and told him...I can't come out of school making THIS much money!! He told her...yes, you can! And I guess it doesn't hurt to go to Yale.

Our military certainly doesn't get paid enough. And I'll say teachers for sure. I was actually headed to be an elementary ed teacher but gave it up because of the limited salary. Instead, I'm looking into business because you can make much more...potentially. It's a shame. I originally went back to school because I was sick of the business world politics.

I honestly can't complain about what Nurses are paid at my hospital. Top of the pay scale for RNs here is $62,000.
I have my Associate's Degree and I get paid as much as the RNs who have their BSN degrees.
I'm not sure what the starting pay is though.

Food Service Workers and Retail workers makes 5.15 hour barely enough to make a lively on. Make so bad some those people have college degrees.

daycare teachers

even though I loved being a daycare teacher and was told I had a real gift with the children, I had to quit - I couldn't afford to stay.
I make more now working part time doing delivery work than full time taking care of children. I was paid less than they would pay a cashier at a grocery store'

Also, don't forget the military. Things are getting slightly better but most are still woefully underpaid.

Ditto! I personally think DH is pretty fairly paid, but I know enlisted personnel are not that lucky. Especially when pay raises are compared to wage increases in the private sector.

Aides in Nursing Homes! I see the kind of work they do in the nursing home my dad is in....and all I can say is you could not pay me enough to change an adult diaper. And with a smile on their face! Btw I asked one girl who said she makes 6.00 per hour!!

I was going to say people who work in nursing homes. I agree with so many that have already been posted too.

$62,000 for the top of the pay scale is a crime! To say that is paid well is innaccurate. Teachers are underpaid as well. That whole 10 months 6 hours a day crap is nowhere near the truth.

Another vote for military, especially Enlisted. Also, teachers!

Early child hood educators...teachers in general...my father is a teacher at a private school and not paid well for the amount of work that is required of him. Some of his days can last till 10pm or later and this is after a full day of teaching classes, coaching sports and supervising evening study hall.

daycare workers and preschool teachers, they get paid a lot less then regular teachers, who don't make enough themselves.

I agree. ::yes:: While clearly, 62 grand is a pretty decent amount of money, I don't like that business people make more than nurses and doctors and don't even get me started about child-care workers. My son's daycare workers are so great and I know they are making squat. We're not rich either, but it's a crime what those people make.

It bugs me that doctors, nurses, cops, teachers, etc. have to justify making 60 or 70 grand, and we take for granted that actors and baseball players and stock market people should be making hundreds of thousands or millions. I think we have our priorities all messed up when it comes to that.

::yes::

Teachers... I'm so looking forward to my salary! HAHAHA!!!
Yep, I'm crazy , but I love the kids!

I agree that most teachers, day care workers, social workers and military personnel are badly underpaid.

I'd also add good customer service reps with the emphasis on GOOD. At one business that I know of they are expected to be extremely knowledgeable, help the customer in all possible ways and be involved with every aspect of the service. However, they are just as poorly paid as the CSR's everyone is always complaining about. This makes it hard to care.

I've got to say, though I would like for lower ranking enlisted members to get more pay, I can't really agree with the "woefully underpaid" assessment of the military. True, there is no amount of money that's enough to pay people that are out there dying for their country, but the pay is really not nearly as bad as some people seem to think. Especially when you take into account free housing (for those living on base), free medical, cheaper food expenses etc.

It's not as good as it could be, but it is MUCH better than it used to be.

:D

I'm a teacher and I have to say we are significantly underpaid. I don't see it changing anytime soon, either. However, it's not the type of job you do for money, anyway.

When someone says that teachers are underpaid, all too often no one brings up the fact that they get so mucn time off during the year plus other benefits. To get an accurate figure of what they make, you need to add in the benefits.

When I worked in child care (Montessori school), it cost more to send your child there than I made working full-time. If I wanted to continue working and send my child there, I would pay more than I got paid. So, the decision to stay home was easy for me.
