What on earth could cause this?

I was sitting here the other day and I heard this very loud "popping" noise inside of my fridge.. Went to see what it was and I found that one of the 8 rolls of Pillsbury Biscuits I had purchased (with coupons - on sale a couple of weeks ago) had exploded all over the place!!

Took it out - looked at the expiration date (not even close to expiring) and figured it was just a fluke..

Evidently not.. The next day, 2 more exploded - and within the past 24 hours, all of the rest exploded..:confused3

Doesn't seem to be anything wrong with my fridge.. Not too cold, not too warm - no wildly fluctuating temperatures in here - and no other pressurized items in the fridge have exploded.. So - what could have caused it?

Is it something I should report to Pillsbury - in case there is an issue with those particular lots - or should I just include it in my memoirs of "2011 At The Lake"? ..

I think this week I'll buy the store brand instead.. LOL..

Poor DD didn't get the Monkey Bread she'd been looking forward to having when she came up this weekend..

Anyone else ever have this happen?

Did you call the store where you bought them? I think you should let them know that they all spontaneously combusted in your fridge.

That is truly a fluke happening, or there was something wrong the product. Any chance you still have your receipt? That is downright funny and strange!

Was it Zuul?????

No - I haven't called the store and I'm sure I didn't keep the receipt because it was one of those deals where I just quick ran in for a couple of things..

I probably should call them - and then they can talk to their supplier..

That's definitely a new one on me.. I've had biscuits like that in the fridge for a long, long time - and never have they exploded..

Glad they weren't in my DD's stomach when the spontaneous combustion occured.. :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

:scared1: I'm so scared of those things.

The only time I've had that happen was with a can that was just a bit past its expiration date. I wonder if maybe yours weren't properly refrigerated at some point in the store or in transit, and they aged faster than they should?

You should be able to get your money back. Talk to the store, or Pillsbury.

Edit to add Pillsbury will probably compensate you even without the receipt, if you can read the lot/serial numbers on the cans.

Were they in the cart and car ride for a longer than normal amount of time. If so, they could have had the yeast activated.

Also, if they were stocked and left out too long, this can happen also. Say the young person left them while helping a customer and forgot about them, and or the store cooler was not working properly.

I'm sorry but that is funny -- although it made me think I had better check a package I have of them in the fridge. I think they HAVE expired since they have been in there a while (I just saw them today and went "oh") but didn't take them out or anything. I never thought about it possibly exploding.

I think I would be calling Pillsbury although they may wonder about you. I think I would call them anyway.

I know I had a 24 pack of pop once and I picked up a can and it was basically empty (it was light). It was the weirdest thing ever and I checked to see if there was a hole or something & nothing. I figured they were going to think I was insane for explaining "I have this unopened can of pop and I'm pretty sure it's empty but I don't see any holes & it's sealed"....they may have thought I was nuts but didn't tell me that. I just gave them the lot number/serial number off the box and they sent me coupons.

I have never run into it since and the exploded Pillsbury rolls just made me think of it as being similar....probably a fluke but it is weird how they all exploded. I don't know if you still have the package but I'm wondering if they were even from the same line? If not, then I'm thinking it was a transit/store handling issue -- I wonder if ones at the store started exploding if it wasn't handled correctly....could you imagine being next to the rolls and they start exploding on the shelf?

After I jump about 30 feet in the air, I would be laughing so hard I'm not sure I would be able to get out of the store.

I have had my biscuits spontaneously burst one time. I only had one can though and it was the store brand, not Pillsbury. I think in my case, they got a little too cold. They ended up pushed to the back corner of the fridge that is notorious for freezing things.

Happens to me all the time, but it's always been ones that were a little past date. :confused3 I wonder if maybe they got too warm either in the store or in transit and started to ferment a little?

A couple of weeks ago I heard that pop/bang, and then I heard something hit the floor and break. I went looking to see which cat I was going to yell at, thinking one of them had gotten up and knocked something off the counter. Saw one of my fridge magnets broken on the floor, opened the fridge...yeah, biscuit guts everywhere. :rotfl:

This kind of thing would be my worst nightmare. (See my tag. :scared1: )

those cans are scary and I love those biscuits. I wish they would make something less scary to open up. I don't like the POP sound nor do I like when it pops open. I like to do a drive by throw, throw it on the counter and see if it pops open on it's on.

O.M.G! I do the same thing! :rotfl2:

Here is a 3 minute clip of Mythbusters called Biscuit Bullet.

Scenario they tested: a woman is driving home from the grocery store on a hot day, hears an explosion and thinks she was shot in the head. She is holding her hand to the back of her head to keep her brain in, and when the paramedics get there, they discover it is a wad of raw dough

I would definitely let the store and/or Pillsbury (or maybe both) know what happened.

I have never heard of this happening before, and I've had run across a stray tube of old biscuits (long past expiration date) in our frig a couple of times. I like to keep them on hand, especially for making individual pizzas.

But anything faulty like that, you should be reimbursed for. I once bought a box of Hostess cupcakes, the chocolate ones with white cream filling and white icing circles on top. Several of them were missing the cream filling. I e-mailed Hostess about it, and they sent me coupons for 3 more boxes.

they will want all the numbers on the can, the UPC code, the exp date and any other batch codes..size of can, how many in a pack, etc..they will also probably ask you when and where you bought it..they are great about things like that and will send you a coupon or two for replacement items!
Never had that happen..and I have had some WAY PAST exp date ones in my fridge (ashamed to admit that, just threw them out, that's how I knew..lol)

That's weird. I would have guessed the same things you already ruled out -- like the fridge being too warm, or the biscuits being out of date. Maybe there was a production problem with the packaging?

Just to share a funny (now) story: I had something similar happen. I figured it out before I called anyone, but for a moment I thought I'd been shot. It was around the time that the snipers were shooting people in Washington DC. (I live in Ohio, not in DC, but shootings were kind of top-of-mind.)

I was in charge of picking up the balloons for my sister's baby shower. It was an incredibly hot day. I picked up the balloon bouquet. They told me that they had put some goo called Hi-Float in the balloons to make them last longer. I shoved them in my car (they took up most of the space) and started driving to the party.

While I was driving, I suddenly heard a very loud BANG! And immediately felt a sharp pain on the side of my face. I put my hand up and could feel hot "blood" oozing down my face. I remember thinking I was shot. Then thinking that it felt different than I would have imagined. More like a "sting" than a "pain." Then I realized that if I could think through all this, I probably wasn't actually shot in the head.

As it turned out... one of the balloons exploded and part of the balloon hit my face (the stinging. It hurt!) The "blood" was actually the Hi-Float goo from the inside of the balloon. It was hot because it was so hot outside.

I'm sure the whole realization took less than a second... but for that second, I was convinced I'd been shot... by a balloon, it turns out.
