What money saving tips do you think are a bit extreme?

Our last trip, in 2008, I got 2 rooms at the Contemporary Tower/Lake View and we all had the deluxe dining plan...and I brought/paid for my mother. I did it because I got a pincode. Should I have not gone because it was out of my vacation budget to go at full price?

You are seriously missing the point. I will try again to explain this to you. You paid for the room and were the beneficiary of a discount. That is GREAT! You should absolutely take advantage of this because there is nothing unreasonable about it. If you can afford to go at the price you pay then all is well. But let's say that in order to afford paying for the trip (even with the pin) you had to sell plasma the entire 6 months before the trip. Then when you got to WDW, you had to go do it again to have spending money. In that case it would be obvious to anyone with any financial sense that the trip was ill advised.

The problem is not with people that save money. The problem is with people who do CRAZY things to save money. And it is not a problem as much as a "it is not for me." It is also about people stealing and that is wrong and illegal.

The OP was about brining in an extra bun. The person PAID for a double cheeseburger, and could afford that, or wanted that, or for whatever reason, got that. Its not about not being able to buy the second burger, it about it being nobody's business if someone chooses to get creative and save a few $$.

The OP was about the bun and the rest got thrown in as people jumped on the bandwagon to make fun of what people do to get their kids to have a nice vacation.

I have 3 kids, 1 in college, 1 in HS and 1 in elementary school. All 3 went to daycare approx 7:00am, school at 9:00am, then to the afterschool program until 5:30pm. The went to summer camp every summer from 7 - 5:30 so my husband and I can work. We go on vacation every year, whether its to our local beach to to Disney. There favorite place is Disney, so whatever it took to get us there, even with daycare expenses and every day expenses, we did it.

I hope nobody judged me for eating cereal in my room years ago.

But, they will give you an extra bun for 60 cents, as a PP pointed out. If someone can't afford an extra 60 cents than that is pretty bad. More likely, they can afford the extra 60 cents and don't want to pay it. That's where the shady part comes in..

People have posted numerous times that they have no issue with most money saving things...and yet, people still refuse to actually read and understand. :sad2: I think I'm done here. I have a trip to pack for- and no, there will be no hamburger buns or grills in my suitcase.;)

I'm craving a condiment salad. Mmmm mmmm good. :lmao:

Until I see someone doing this I have to believe it's an exaggeration. I hope it's an exaggeration.

This is in no way an exaggeration. I have an uncle that does it.

They take the burger out of the cardboard holder and fill that with condiments.

Lettuce tomatoes onion mushrooms etc…

In the end they paid for a burger and they can have as much condiments as they like.

Do I agree with it, not at all, but I really do not call it stealing.
There is no sign that says you can only have some limited amount of condiments.

If he piled the same amount of stuff on his burger would it then be OK?

That's not what people are talking about. The whole condiment salad thing people are talking about is when no one buys anything at all, in which case no it isn't okay.

You don't get access to unlimited condiments unless you buy something, which your uncle does.

FYI Foreman makes a combo grill/griddle that wouldfit in a suitcase:rotfl2:
 yeah, that's ok. I'm also the daughter of a firefighter, so I know better than to hook up appliances in a hotel room.

Plus, who the hell wants to cook on vacation!?:goodvibes

Really? So people just walk up and take the condiments and make a salad?

I really cannot believe that one until I see it.

I totally agree that is stealing.

What do they put it in and why are the people who work the condiment bar stopping them?

Well not me. I do everything and anything that needs to be done all year round at home. When I get to Disney even toasting my bagel in the foodcourt feels like an effort. :rotfl:

Trust me I mean no harm in my post....People on these boards seem to get off topic very quickly....I 'm a frugal person myself ..

 Oh no, I was clear that you meant no harm when I read your post. I just highlighted the fact that I understood the tone in which it was intended by quoting you in my post for the benefit of anyone who hadnt read both of them. :goodvibes

Let's actually break down the extra bun thing m'kay?

How much is a package of hamburger buns at the store? I think at my local store is is about 2.39/8 Pack... sound right?

Let's say a family of four has double cheeseburgers divided with the extra bun brought in for two meals a day for a 7 day vacation.

So you need 3.5 packages of "extra buns" ~ I'll give ya the 1/2 even although you would have to buy 4. So that cost you $8.36

Buying the extra buns at each meal for .60 would cost you 16.80 over the course of the week.

So okay you really saved: $8.44 over the course of the week. I am sorry if the 8.44 is going to make it so you CAN'T go then there are bigger problems and maybe you shouldn't be going anyway.... just saying.

If my budget for vacation were that tight I don't think I could even enjoy myself.

That has absolutely nothing to do with anything.

I have to say that the majority of the replies on this thread just make me shake my head. I could care less what someone else does to save money. It's none of my business. To those who say that making a condiment salad is stealing then let Disney deal with it - once again - IT'S NONE OF YOUR BUSINESS. If some of you feel so strongly about it and it's so prevalent then why not call the people out when you see it? Start yelling, "Condiment stealer!!!" and bring a whistle to blow.

The fact is you folks are only vocal about these things because you can do it anonymously via the DIS. I'm just glad I don't live next to any member of the "condiment police" because you must have your noses in everyone's business based on some of the posts on here. Just repeat to yourselves - "IT'S NONE OF MY BUSINESS!". :teacher:

:thumbsup2 very good points..some people don't even need to do all that stuff, but they do. Personally, I think extreme frugality( when not warranted) is just as much of a sickness as overspending. One of my great aunts was wealthy. She was one of those who would freeze in the winter rather than turn on the heat, she'd unravel sweaters and reuse the yarn rather than buy more. She wasn't a happy woman either, she alienated most of her family and friends because of her cheapness.

I would be very ashamed if I had to steal to eat, but apparently, some people are just fine with it.

I so know what you are talking about - I had a friend whose family is quite wealthy yet she is the cheapest person you would ever meet. She once scraped mold off of a bun and offer it to me to eat. She thought nothing about buying dented cans because they were on clearance. She has children the same age as my son now and they have never been to Disney - can she afford to take them - YES - her mother gave her 1/4 million dollars for Christmas a couple of years ago. If she did ever go, I could see her being one of the condiment salad people.

Money is very important to her and she likes to keep all of it to herself. She is the queen of regifting gifts so that she doesn't have to buy anything. That is why she has an extremely healthy balance in her bank account and I have a modest one. :rolleyes1

I think that if one knew some of the condiment salad people, they would discover that it is people that do have the money to actually buy a meal but are too cheap so feel it is their right to "steal" because the condiments are just sitting there for the taking. :confused3

How about next when you go and there is no condiment bar because too much of it was being stolen? Then is it your problem when you get standard condiments and have to ask for no this or no that and pay extra for sautéed mushrooms and onions? Then is it your problem?

BTW ~ you'd love living next to us. I don't even know my neighbors name and we have lived here for over 5 years. So NO I am not in their business.

As I said previously... I would never say anything directly to someone or point it out to an employee... but you can BET I will discuss it later with my hubby and probably my mother and my aunt and maybe even my father.

Then we will hear how Disney is going downhill because they used to have a nice condiment bar and now you get a piece of lettuce and a slab of tomato.

All things have to be paid for somehow. Trust me ... you are paying for that condiment bar in the cost of your burger.

Would you walk in to Chef Mickeys with a container and serve yourself from the buffet and leave? Would that not be stealing either?? Just curious.

Just because it's Disney doesn't make it any different. If someone went into your local supermarket and starting eating in the produce section to save money, would you not judge? Same thing. What about going to an expensive restaurant and running out on the bill just because they felt they deserved the luxury of eating there when they couldn't afford it? I doubt you'd be defending those people.

Just to summarize, saving money by bringing your own food = :thumbsup2, saving money by stealing food from Disney = :sad2:.

Maybe they don't even pay for the buns because they are on food stamps.
Do you have any idea how many military families are on food stamps?
Should they not go to Disney because they have bigger problems?

I have actually had to go get a CM to make someone leave Pizzafari at AK. There were no tables available and there were a group eating the lunch that they brought from home. They had purchased nothing from there. I asked them politely to let us use one of the tables they were occupying since we were PAYING customers. I was told to get lost. I went and got the Manager and had them removed. So it is not the anonymity of the Dis. Had they not been cheap and trying to use something they were not entitled to (the customer seating area); or just let us have one of their tables they could have stayed and continued to eat. Instead they were told to leave and one of their tables were cleanedand given to us and others were giving to paying customers.

No, IMO they shouldn't go to Disney if they have bigger problems. I don't know why people feel they are entitled to luxuries they can't afford. I don't put myself into debt buying a fancy car even though I'd love one because I know I can't afford it and I have more important things to pay for.

We all love Disney, we're on the DISboards after all, but seriously it's not a necessity or a right to go.
