I am a teacher and this year I have been doing my school's sports and pageant portraits as a fundraiser for my journalism program. As a result of these pictures, many people have been asking me about senior pictures, kids pictures, etc. So, I thought I'd go ahead and pursue a little side photography work. I won't have a studio. I'll either go to their homes, outdoor locations, etc. I may also do an occasional weekend event at a local store. What type of business license or tax papers do I need to take care of before I get started? Thanks!

you'd probably need a federal tax id number. if you have an accountant they could tell you how to get one or even your bank may be able to. i know our bank won't deposit checks into a business account without one. ( sorry don't remember how we got one, it's been decades, but it was just filing out a form i think)

It may vary state to state. Another possibility is that you may need a vendor's license.

for events at the local store you should have, or they may require liability insurance..

First I am always excited when someone wants to start a small business. I know you said you will do it part time but you should really approach it as a business from day one. You will probably will be operating as a sole proprietor or owner. Just remember that say should a child get hurt when you are taking their picture, you can be sued personally if it is due to your negligence.

You should seriously consider insurance and I believe you should consider sooner more than later forming an LLC to protect your personal assets.

I am an insurance agent and would be glad to answer any questions you may have.

It is not just the chance of getting sued over an injury, they can sue you if they do not like their pictures! Especially if it is some sort of event where it would be difficult to re-create. Some judges award crazy amounts for emotional pain and suffering on things like that. You should also get some sort of liability insurance to handle things like that and injuries. Basically, if you are going to try to be even remotely serious about it, expect to shell out a few dollars to get it going right.
