What is your opinion on the United Kingdom?

I take my kids out of school depending on where we go. I always have for WDW as I don't like the summer heat and crowds. We just have always had a better time say in early December, or prior to any major breaks. Two of my kids are now done with school and both have done well in life. :-)

When I was in 3rd grade my grandparents paid for us to go to the Pocono Mountains in October I think it was. We were taken out of school for that week, I suppose. It was the grownups' business, so I'm fuzzy on those details although I remember the trip itself very well.

We also left school a few days early every Summer to go down the shore because my Mom's job there started up full time at that time. In my school the kids had to clean the classrooms, put brown paper and tape over the bookcases, and wash down the blackboards those last few days. I never had to do that, for which kid me was happy.

My mom was a teacher so we mostly stayed within our stated dates. One Christmas I was taken out a few days early but was a non issue.

The real fun one, was when I was a senior in high school I went to visit family for a cousin's graduation. It coincided when senior projects started so awards were given out that week too. I had no idea until afterward; I got the award for perfect attendance that year. :rotfl2:

No. But my dad worked for Caterpillar and they closed down 2 weeks every July, so thats when we took vacation.

I have pulled my kids out of school 3 years in a row for vacation and its not been an issue yet. The teachers have always been super awesome about giving them the assignments ahead of time and letting them do them as they can as long as they are done by the time they go back to school. Of course with so much being done on schoolology or google classroom, or other apps like that, it's pretty easy. Only issue we had was the school ipads cannot connect to public wifi, so I had to use my hotspot. My sister in laws kids tho.. Whew. 2 years ago we went for a week in Jan. Her oldes was in 4th grade. He had to turn in everything the same day it would have been done in class or got a zero for that assignment. His chromebook would not connect to Disney's wifi or parents hotspots on phones. The school did not care that it was connection issues and gave him zero's for every assignment that week. Neither school cared about the days absent (I know some only allow so many days before you get in trouble). Poor kid went from an A to an F in every subject during that week, even though he had all the assignments done when he returned to school.

Public schools hate it because they lose funding when kids aren't in school regardless of the reason - even if they call in sick.
I think this is the reason for most districts stricter policies for absences. We went thru a huge issue when my son was in 1st grade (long story) which resulted in us finding an educational advocate. We found out that in our state, you can just unenroll your kids from school for a week, and re-enroll later and there is nothing the school can do about it as long as it's a public school. This was totally unrelated to a vacation at the time, but it's handy information to have for later lol.

My parents never took us out for vacation. We always went the same 2 weeks in July. I took my kids out of school every time we went to Disney. If we just went to the beach, we would go during the summer.

As long as the kids were working hard and doing well in school, we'd often take them out for a week to do Disney. The educational value of family trips like that is incredible. By the time my kids were 12, I could have (I didn't, but could have!) dropped them off at the airport, and they knew enough to check a bag, go through security, and could have gotten on their plane. They used those skills often in college and in the work place. And missing 4-5 days of school was not a big deal, as long as they planned, and took the time to catch up on the lessons they missed - which they did.

My parents always refused to take time out of school time to go on holiday, always the summer time
No, but my mom was a teacher and my dad was (is) a farmer. It wasn't until the 2000s when technology really made it possible for him to step away from the farm for more than a couple days. Our summer vacations were always Thursday-Sunday, and we never went anywhere during the school year that I can recall.

We take our kids out of school for vacation every year, it's typically just a day, and we do it with teacher's blessing. For instance, I might take a kid to a rocket launch or to a trade show and the teachers view it as a positive experience. Attendance policy here is changing, kids now get 5 remote days to use in a school year. This is the self-guided type, not login to Teams type. This is ideal, so we can take our preferred vacation dates in October without worrying about it.

Never was taken out as a child but took both my girls out of school every year from age 4 through high school for Disney World. That was at least 35 years ago. They are huge Disney Lovers as adults. Don't regret it for a minute.

Yup - we went to Mexico the week after Thanksgiving every year until about 5th grade. And then my parents felt I was missing too much school to go then. I did still usually miss 2-3 days of school around spring break as we left early or came back later from spring break (always depended on the airfare).
