What is Wrong With Parents?? Parent attacks Coach

Im glad my parents wernt like this, is bad as athlete as I was, I would have a history of coaches with slashed faces

Parent slashes coach's face over playing time. This are little kids!

Haven't had one in sports for several years but good grief! If its changed this much, not sure I will encourage ds to put the dgds in sports at all.

It's really not common.

It seems like it happens all of the time, but compared to how many sporting events happen everyday with out any problems, I wouldn't let it discourage the grand kids from playing!

:rotfl: Same here!

DS has been helping his gf's son in baseball and going to all the games. He says that the league here has changed their rules beyond belief to stop any kind of disagreement or argument from the parents with the officials or the coaches. He said the problem is that it doesn't help. And there is a lot more anger coming from the parents than back when he played.

I was president of a youth soccer league and we had a grandfather pull a gun on a referee in an UNDER 8 soccer game where they didn't even keep score.

After 7 years in that volunteer job I learned I loved the kids-not so much the parents.

No words...

It's sad that people are so messed up and behave badly. Thankfully these are generally just isolated incidents that make news and most of us don't have to deal with it. That said, I've certainly seem my share of over-involved/living-vicariously-through-their-kids parents. Too bad they don't realize their kids (and all the other kids) notice their inappropriate embarrassing behavior. When our DS was younger he thanked me on several occasions for not being "a crazy sports parent"

I'm telling you it's nuts. My ds is 11 and has always played sports and ppl. (adults) are just absolutely nuts and disgusting. It just seems to be constant, and for the most part we have good parents etc., but there's always one or two who just seem insane. I don't get it, it's really sad.

I dont see it happening all that much...some parents are too intense but for the most part ok. For me it is some of these over the top coaches, who I am sure are reliving some glory days gone by, either that or they think winning the LL championship Minors division will help their resume...I always hear crap like "it is for the kids" oh please, not when the kids arent having fun bc you a tyrant.

But even with that said the good coaches far outnumber the goofy over the top coaches, and the good parents far outweigh the bad parents.

I frankly dont see how slicing the coach;s face is going to get the kid more playing time...seems pretty counterproductive.

I know, right?!?

Now football is just getting started for the younger ones here, so ds hasn't seen anything with it; but he said baseball was crazy.

The parents are supposedly not allowed to say a word about a call or anything or they can be removed from the stands. The umpires are allowed to argue with them or throw them out of the game. But, he said, there is more arguing between parents and umpires, parents and officials and parents and coaches. The officials keep saying they are teaching "sportsmanship" and ds asked them "who are you teaching it to, because the kids aren't learning it". He saw several kids acting in a way that his coaches would have removed the kid from the game, but the umpires are too busy trying to straighten out the parents and no one pays attention to the attitude coming from the kid.

DS learned so much from playing sports that helps him in his adult life, and its sad that some kids aren't going to get those valuable lessons now.

Agreed!

DS has tried everything and currently plays basketball and football. (Freshman)

What kills me is how many parents will stoop to any level to "kiss up" for their kids to get on the better team or get more play time. Now that DS is a freshman im curious to see how much these so called superstars play now thats there is a paid unbiased coach.

Over the years, i've witnessed police called when a parent threatened a ref with a bat.
A fight between 2 moms in a 7th grade travel basketball game that spilled over to FB.
A confrontation between a mom (same mom as above) and coach during another basketball game.

Nothing too much yet with DD except angry parents and bad calls, but shes only 9 so lots of years to go.

People are so intense its ridiculous. Everyone wants their kid to be a superstar.
My DD (9) has a friend who makes their DD practice sports EVERYDAY for at least 15-30 min.
Shes on 3 different types of teams in the spring and fall and has no down time. Practice or games 7 days a week.
