I had never cruise before. The Fantasy is going to be my first cruise. I had read so many threads about cruise dress code and there is something I don't get.

Why there are so many people against wearing jeans at diner?

I'm a teacher and I'm not allowed to wear jeans at the school. But when ever I go out anywhere I always wear jeans and I feel very confortable in then. I understand that Palo and Remy have a dress code, but why there are so many people saying that is so wrong to wear jeans at dinner. I remember reading something that state DCL as a very lay back type of cruise. Am I wrong??

So we can't wear jeans (the very nice ones) to dinner? :confused3

The dress code used to be that jeans were on the list of what NOT to wear to dinner on the ships. That changed a few years ago and now shorts and bathing suits are pretty much the only things requested that you don't wear -- and some have issues with the shorts. We don't wear jeans or shorts to dinner but we also don't wear them to Church. I am simply not comfortable doing so.

There is no jeans problem. Several years ago, there was a "no jeans" request on the Magic's Navigators...maybe the Wonder, but I can't prove that.
It was in the same section with the no swimwear, tank tops, shorts request...and it was totally not enforced as are the continuing dress statements.

Then the "no jeans" was removed. Thus, jeans are currently fine. All you are getting is people's opinions and some very old stuff from Navigators.

There are no jeans permitted in Palo or Remy--this has always been part of the dress code and is enforced. It is enforced at brunch and tea as well as at dinner (dd was asked to change at tea).

jeans can look great (not faded, torn or 'pants on the ground') with shoes not sneakers, and a nice shirt and blazer don't you think??

I hope you don't teach English :) "dinner" JUST KIDDING!!!

My husband and boys wears nice jeans to dinner but that was on the "older" ships. On the Fantasy, I would probably dress a little better.

:lmao: No, I don't teach English. In fact English is my second language (sorry for my grammar). I teach Spanish. :hippie:

Thanks for the information.

Think of one of the faciest restaurants in your town. Would you wear jeans to dine at that place?
The main dining room on a cruise is more of a "dress up" place than a Denny's for example.
Now, decades and decades ago when cruises were only for the very rich, it was MUCH more of a formal affair. I heard someone say here once that it is a sign of respect for the crew that provide such nice "fancy" service and the cruise ship that made such beautiful places to eat to dress accordingly By that I do not mean true "formal" but just nicer. ;)
Here are 2 rules of thumb I go by:
1- Dress to the level of the establishment. If a casual eatery- dress casually. If nicer- dress nicer.
2- Don't dress too far down from the waiters. Now that does not mean if they are in a tux you need to be, but more as a clue. Hmm... the waiters are dressed in formal attire- so that tells me I should be at least dressing aboce Denny's attire.

You are correct. I love to dress up my jeans and my husband will not wear anything thorn. I was just wondering. I want to be comfortable but still not look out of place.

LOL, :lmao: I just edited my post. I was only kidding and didn't want you to take it the wrong way. I was being silly and hope you took it at such.

Back to your topic, our tablemates last cruise had shorts on and it didn't bother them. I think it's more about what you are comfortable with.

you will not feel out of place in nice jeans in the regular restaurants but they are not allowed in Palo / Remy

Thanks, I don't eat at Denny's but I get what you are saying. :)

As others have said, jeans are acceptable in the dining rooms for dinner.

I wouldn't wear them only because I find jeans too heavy to wear in a hot and humid climate. Plus, they are heavy when considering luggage weight or packing space.

OMG! you are so right on the luggage weight. I haven't think about that. :thumbsup2

I normally sail during the fall/winter months and I ALWAYS wear jeans at least on the first night on DCL as it is what I wear to get onboard. Of course the new style is wearing jeans down to your ankles and jeans with strategic rips and tears. I personally wouldn't wear anything like that I would hope that folks would avoid wearing something like that to dinner. But, other than that I don't see anything wrong with it. Jeans can be very dressy, it just depends on how you wear them and with what you wear them (bring on the classic flats and or heels. :)

I sure wish it was the last time I was in Palo.

We were enjoying a wonderful brunch when in strolls a guy in jean shorts, ripped not hemmed, a hockey jersey and sneakers with no laces.

I am a live and let live kind of guy so I said nothing but it relly irked me the way he was dressed

You can wear black or white jeans to Palo brunch but they'll usually ask you to change if you wear blue ones. The management was trying to explain to someone on the PC cruise on the Wonder that he had to go back and change out of his blue jeans, and he was protesting that blue jeans were all he had. I don't think they let him stay.

Yes, I've worn blue jeans on occasion to the regular dining rooms if I don't feel like changing clothes for whatever reason.

If you don't have appropriate pants for Palo, they will provide a pair of black dress pants. On my last cruise earlier this month, my SIL wasn't going to keep his ressie at Palo because he only had jeans... they encouraged him to come, and provided pants for him to wear. I thought that was a nice Disney touch :)

I'm perplexed a bit by this comment. This is not the first time I have come across someone saying sailing on the Magic or Wonder is not as good or not as "fancy" as the Dream or Fantasy. We sailed the Magic for the first time last month and I was a bit horrified at the number of people in my town who asked if we went on the Dream and when I said no they looked at me and said "oh." with a sad look like I couldn't afford the "fancy" ship. Truth was my family wanted a 7 night cruise which we couldn't do on the fancy ship and indeed paid more money. :confused3

I was unaware that the other ships were now lower class and not as good and therefore ok to wear jeans at.

Sorry, but people are funny.
