What is the appeal of Sean Penn?

I think he's an excellent actor, I don't find him physically attractive, and his personal beliefs/agenda/etc. don't bother me at all. I don't know him; I'm not going to judge him.

I never really liked Sean Penn until I saw him in Dead Man Walking and then Mystic River. After Mystic River, I can semi-understand the attraction some have for him. I can't really explain it, because I wouldn't call him "good looking" but there was just something about him in that movie. Both of those have become some of my all time favorite movies especially Mystic River (one of those got to watch it every time its on type of movies).

With him just as with any other actor, I tend not to look at their polictical views or their opinions about much of anything. I really don't think being a talented actor gives any of them expertise in any other area. I don't really care what his views are. And most of them have an arrest record so I don't look at that too much either (if I did, I wouldn't be watching too much of anyone, ya know?) I wonder if having that level of talent somehow makes someone more prone to doing the kind of stuff that lands you in jail?

As for Katrina, a lot of famous people actually showed up in the area trying to help. And I really believe some of them (maybe all, I don't know) were sincere in their efforts. The cameras were already there and besides most of them are not able to go anywhere without cameras following them--that's not necessairly their fault. At least he did something, thats a lot more than a lot of folks did.

Aside from the fact that he is a brilliant actor? He completely embodies the characters that he portrays. He is one of the best actors of his generation. You might not like the movies he chooses to be in but I don't think people can deny that he is an incredible actor.

He is one of my favorite actors but there is no physical appeal. I think he embraces all of his roles fully and does an excellent job. He can be a very different character in each movie, unlike, say, George Clooney is who is the SAME guy in every movie.

My favorite movie with him is Dead Man Walking.

I think he's a brillant actor - one of the best in Hollywood right now. I Am Sam and Milk were both difficult and sensitive roles and he was incredible in them.

Honestly, politics and lifestyles don't matter to me at all. If they play the role well, then I can admire their talent. Who they vote for or sleep with has no bearing on that.

I don't care who they vote for, I don't want to know, which is why it irks me. If he was my neighbor across the street, the media would not care. Because he is who he is, he chooses that to forward his own agenda, political and humanitarian. Personally I could live without politics in the media in all forms. When they are too vocal about these things, it's like a knee jerk reaction for me, it turns me away. I'm sure others who feel the same as him, might be swayed to see something by him because of it. JMHO.

I do appreciate his acting ability, what I've seen I've enjoyed.

Please! I don't know why anyone had questions, don't know if there was any reason for those questions but it was an awful thing to say and it definitely puts him in a negative light.

The only film I have seen him in and loved the role he played was Fast Times at Ridgemount High...yes, I was senior in high school at that time.

I can't stand him.

He's not good looking, seems to be a brutish bully and everything that comes out of his mouth is a mess. No redeeming qualities I can see.

I cannot stand him. But sometimes he is in a movie and does such an incredible job, I just clear my mind of Sean Penn, and concentrate on the role he is expertly playing. Mystic River and Dead Man Walking both come to mind.

His personal life and his temper makes it hard to like him. His recent great work in Haiti would be hard to overlook or not acknowledge, but he has a big mouth and a big temper and if people don't like him, its no surprise given those traits and his never ending mouth fest. And I am sorry the Hugo Chavez thing is just beyond my comprehension as is the rectal cancer. Like so many others, if you disagree with what he believes, he wishes you the very worst fate that can be had. Makes it hard to give him credit when he does deserve it.

I think like so many artists, he can be a very tormented guy. Last I heard, he and Robin Wright Penn were separated, which is too bad if its still the case. I can't even imagine what it would be like to live with someone like that.

I absolutely concur with you about giving importance to anyone who thinks they can bypass the law and do as they please. These people are certainly NOT role models. I also don't care about his politics (or any other celebrity for that matter), but don't care much for his Chavez/Castro bros connections.

Having said that, he took a photographer with him at least when he was trying to rescue families during Katrina. He wasn't even knowledgeable enough to plug the boat before he started out, then they were trying to bail water so it didn't sink. IMO, those types of efforts should be left to the professionals. He likely could have put his entire entourage (which included a personal photographer) in jeopardy because he was not trained to be there, regardless of his motivation.

I concur that he probably did want to help. I have little doubt of that. He shouldn't have put anyone in jeopardy to do so however. Let's not even discuss the fact that rescuers could have been pulled from their efforts to have to help him and his entourage.
