What is scarier, Splash Mountain or Big Thunder Mountain?

I'm not a person to ride the "big" rides and was hesitant about BTMR but put on my brave face for our DSs. I could not make myself ride Splash Mountain because of the drop at the end.

DH rode Splash w/DSs and got absolutely soaked. I was thankful I watched instead of rode. :) We all rode BTMR and I loved the ride and couldn't wait to ride again. Our 6yo thought it was the best ride ever!

I don't think either are scary, I think they are both a lot of fun. Truthfully Disney really has no extreme rides IMHO, especially when you compare to thrill rides elsewhere. That's not a put down, I really prefer the level of thrill rides that Disney offers.

I agree with all who say "Splash" is scarier. However, BTMRR freaked my 5.5 year old DD out, because she rode it at night. She didn't mind Splash at all (also ridden at night), but the darkness threw her for a loop (figuratively ;) ) on BTMRR and from then on, she had to ask us for each and every ride if it was "fast". This is coming from a kid who normally has no fear of rides that would leave many weak. And we had a heck of a time taking her on Test Track, because, yup, that ride is fast, but not anything that people usually fear. (She did fine on TT, as an aside.)

I do think she would have been fine on BTMRR if it had been daylight and she could have seen where she was going. The interesting thing to me is that she is normally braver than I am and I loved BTMRR at night. Go figure.

BTMRR - the only thing scary is if you have the urge to put your hands in the air. Some of the over hangs seem REALLY close, lol. (And don't do it besides, you block the person's behind you picture!) It's gorgeous at nite and the best ride is in the last seat!

BTMRR was the first coaster that both of my kids rode at MK. It is still my daughter's favorite-in fact, when we were at the P&P party last year, there were no lines, so the CMs let us stay on. We dared the family behind us to a ride off ( the dad looked a bit taken aback, but the kids were all for it!) . Six back to back rides later...we weren't scared, but we were more than a little dizzy. SM is scary only in the sense that the last drop creates a little anxiety--neither ride if very wild.

I am the biggest ride wimp I've ever met and Big Thunder is my second favorite ride in all of Disney World (after Haunted Mansion). In some ways I think Big Thunder is more similar to Peter Pan or the Haunted Mansion (but faster) than a thrill ride ... you come around a turn very fast and suddenly and there's something else there to see. I would say the drops are not even much worse than Pirates.

I've never been brave enough to do Splash ... or Space Mountain (would have done it this time! really!) ... or ToT ... or RnR ... or EE ... or (ahem) the Barnstormer :scared: ... love Test Track though. (I told my husband that this time I'd be willing to try Splash, EE, or ToT, *but* I would not try the second if I didn't enjoy the first nor the third if I didn't enjoy the second, so he should pick the order carefully. :rotfl: )

I guess I don't think of either of them as 'scary'.

I guess I'd pick Splash if only becuase they build up that final drop so much... It starts in line as you watch it over and over again, then as you approach it for real the music in the background turns ominous and those crows keep telling you, "You're going down ..."

But really, the whole thing is over in about 3 seconds.

What's so scary about that ? ;)

Just have fun ! :wizard:

I've never been brave enough to do Splash ... )

You're missing one of the best (if not THE best) rides in the MK !!!

It's such a great, LONG ride, with lots of great scenes and special effects...

It's just that drop at the end that is smooth as glass and is over before you know it. It looks MUCH worse than it really is...

Just GO !

You'll LUV it ! :wizard:

I don't think that either is scary, but if you did Splash Mountain, you CAN certainly handle Big Thunder Mountain!! There are no real drops on BTMRR, just a lot of banked turns and circles. Even when I was a little kid and was scared of roller coasters, I LOVED BTMRR. Nothing scary about the ride, you will LOVE it!

It is the one I'm least worried about, actually, and the one my husband's most looking forward to. It's more a combination of not being a thrill ride junkie *plus* not finding the story all that appealing. Like, the story would be OK, and the drop would be OK, but is "OK" worth waiting for? :rolleyes1 I was a CM, so I never used to wait for rides ... I would just come back another day when they weren't busy, but Splash was always busy and I never felt that either the story or the ride were appealing enough to make waiting worth it. (My roommate at the time used a wheelchair and BTMRR has wheelchairs enter through the exit, so we never had to wait for that one, which is how I rode it a zillion times despite the above refusing-to-wait rule.)

Neither...

BTM is not thrilling, its fun, and there is a diffrence.

Splash has a lot more thrill to it. Climbing to the top can be nerver racking, but thats half the fun!

Well, Tilly...

In terms of Splash, think of it this way...

When you're standing on the sidelines, watching the "logs" drop down that final hill, count the seconds it takes. Do the 'one mississippi, two mississippi'
thing...

You'll see that the drop itself takes litterally about FIVE seconds. What in the world could be so scary in five seconds time ?

Exactly.

Just GO :wizard:
